Back when the 90's era of NYC was the Rotten Apple and full of gun violence and crime like Chi-raq and Nas was the Donald Goines of the whole essence. This is one of those albums whereas even if you weren't from NYC you knew what it smelled like, what it felt like, and what it was like. There are a lot of classic albums to come out of the rap genre but few were able to encapsulate an area like what Nas was able to do with Queensbridge. Southernplayalisticcadillacfunkymusic felt like Atlanta, Common's Ressurection felt like the Southside of Chicago and Illmatic was the sound of Queens, NY.

Also Biggie's Ready To Die was the drug-dealing side of Brooklyn, Warren G's Regulate G-Funk Era had the relaxing sound of Cali, Redman's Dare Iz a Darkside had the gritty side of Newark, NJ, Scarface's The Diary told the scary side of Houston, Texas and Bone Thugs' Creeping on ah Come Up had the haunted soul of Cleveland, Ohio

For years, I’d see the thumbnail for this vid and skip over it. Now that I’ve given it a try, I might’ve revisited this video maybe 40+ times by the time of this comment. Words cannot express the emotions I get watching this nostalgia. From the ultra complex verses from God’s Son to the various NY occurrences captured beautifully in just the 5 minutes this MV runs. That white SC400 is cherry on top too. Just from examining this video time over time again, makes me feel like I’ve experienced this era first hand( Born in ‘98, ya’ll ahaaa) I can go on and on, but as much as I wish to have been apart of this time, I’m just thankful we can revisit this and capture/recapture the vibes it exhibits. Nas was doing his version of Kool G Rap, not Rakim; and he DOES come dangerously close at times to completely biting his style, which is why Russell Simmons rejected him when they shopped his demo at Def Jam. The star of this song is Q-Tip, though: incredible run with Midnight Marauders, his Nas songs, The Mobb Deep album (both the credited and uncredited engineering and producing work; just listen to the drums, especially the snares, on that album if you have any doubt about how involved Tip was), and Crooklyn Dodgers-one of the dopest producers/unique ears of all time. To this day, no one knows what that Crooklyn Dodgers sample is.

Let’s not forget Pete Rock was on the piano 🎹 🔑 !!! This sound sound will never go unnoticed !!! Nas is genius ❤️❤️❤️ 2 black brother making music 🎶 about life is not what it’s about today !! nas was and still is rapping about poor communities how he’s not going to sale his soul to the industry! They want him to change but he won’t 🔑 gotta love Nas
