These are NOT 'spacesuits". They are "pressure" suits desiigned for the event of a UDE (Unscheduled Depressurization Episode) of the capsule. Same principle for the suits of the SR71 pilots (check it out). A "spacesuit" is designed for the space environment. Regardless, Space X has the better suit (in function & in style).

There are two sets of pressure suits for ascent and descent what the astronauts are wearing for cabin pressure loss protection = the white/black SpaceX one and the blue Boing one. This is what we discuss here. AND THEN there is the new Space Suit SpaceX has introduced a week ago that is white/black as well BUT IS A COMPLETE different suit made for EVA which has to face the complete different problems of full contact with space. And since the Polaris Dawn Mission where 4 astronauts will be doing the first 4 people (private) EVA simultaneously where even 2 astronauts will leave the space craft (in turns) while the other 3 will stay EVAed inside Dragon is planned for in about 2-3 months ("this summer") it is safe to say the EVA suits are ready! So again what are you talking about? The SpaceX EVA suit is tested and ready and the pressure suits anyway??

Opening the space industry to private corporations is probably the best thing to happen to the space program since Yuri Gagarin's flight in 1961. Competition is what drives innovation. Wow what startling news. US Astronauts like the SpaceX Dragon flight suits over the Roskosmos or Shuttle flight suits. Sure our crews would like anything over what or they had in the legacy systems. But how many astronauts that have flow on Dragon have actually tried the Starliner suits? And you speculate that the Starliner suits MAY be cumbersome at specific times. No proof just speculation. Both Dragon and Starliner flight suits need to be tested in LEO vacuum with a human occupant before saying something definitive.
@bdgrandin

All though I agree with the conclusion it’s premature to compare as the Boeing suit has not been used in flights yet. Also would be good to have same astronaut try and use both suits. Of course an astronaut is going to say the suit they have is great to the public they kinda have to as promotion is part of the job now that things are commercial corporations.

Both suits are designed to do the same job: protect the crew upon take off and reentry in case of cabin depressurization or fire. Along with that there are ancillary functions such as communications, life support, etc. both suits are designed to be lighter, more flexible and comfortable than previous generations of suits. However, in comparing the two purely from what can be seeing in these videos, the Spacex suit would appear to have achieved better overall integration of all systems. Spacex’s design of a single umbilical that attaches to the thigh for life support and communications is quite elegant. The helmet is simpler and doesn’t require an additional Snoopy helmet. The Boeing suit seems to be very fussy. Lots of zippers, overlapping folds on the upper arms, two umbilicals on either side of the abdomen and some other cable on the left side of torso (no sure about this though). Spacex suit appears to be easier and simpler when it comes to donning and un-donning. Both suits are designed to NASA specifications for crew protection. It would interesting to know how they compare in this regard. Also, there might some non-apparent features unique to each suit. Again, it would be great to understand them. Overall it would seem that the Spacex suit follows Elon Musk’s design philosophy that the best part is no part. In other words KISS.

I guess it’s always a matter of aesthetic preference in the end but I have always thought the SpaceX suit is surprisingly something put together by cash strapped effects designers for a B sci-fi movie from the 60s, ie a poor man’s view of what a future suit might look like a bit like Hardy Amiss’s take on Air Stewardess outfits on the shuttle in 2001, a film otherwise brilliant I might add, but it perhaps deserved better than the Queen’s favourite and rather old hat conservative designer trying to be ‘modern’ which is how the SpaceX suit looks to me, did Musk influence it I wonder? Oh and it seems to make everyone look fat and to my eye far from sleek, esp that weird looking helmet that’s escaped from the Dr Who props Dept though if it works well who cares about the weird look. At first sight the Boeing suit looks far better, efficient, modern practical and fit for function, over the bargain basement put together ‘whatever mis matched bits we could find in the nearest costume store to look different’ approach. But hey I’m judging looks over the possible functionality so in that regard it might indeed be better, though I will take views from non SpaceX fan boy KZbin channels as well on that one so as to try to make a balanced objective judgement.

Why does the force of gravity change so abruptly when we leave the atmosphere?
@wally7856
@wally7856 Ай бұрын
It doesn't. It slowly lowers with distance from the planet exactly like a light bulb slowly gets dimmer as you walk away from it. Where the international space station is there is still 90% of the gravity that you feel at sea level. If you weight 100 lbs here on Earth and there was a "stationary" platform where the space station is - you would still weigh 90 lbs on that platform. The reason they don't "feel" gravity there is because the ISS isn't stationary, it is in orbit around the Earth. They orbit every 90 minutes so their centrifugal force that wants to fling them outward is EXACTLY the same as the gravity wants to pull them inward. Think of a merry-go-round that wants to fling you out and gravity wants to pull you in. Balance the 2 forces and they cancel and you feel weightless. That is why to get to orbit you have to travel at 17,500 MPH sideways to stay up there. Without that centrifugal force you would fall back down just like you threw a rock up into the air. In fact, that is how they get back down to Earth. The just slow down a little bit and that reduces their centrifugal outward force and gravity pulls them back down. Remember; it is Earths gravity that holds the Moon in place and the Moons gravity that affects the tides and the Sun's gravity that holds the Earth in place - look how far away those 2 objects are and their gravity still works all the way over here.

ok so basically you're comparing the "style" of the suits ... great content ! So for reference, why don't you check out how mobility in EVA really works when you have a pressurized suit. You're literally a balloon floating in space. that's why Boeing suit has those bulky arms joints. SpaceX does not therefor REDUCING the mobility. IF you're gonna say that "it's internal" well I honestly doubt it cause they are so tight that I don't see any form of mechanism built in for that. Which brings me to the second point... Where the heck is the temperature regulation in SpaceX suit ?? For those (including the author) who don't know, when you're in space and exposed to light, the temperature climbs quickly and when on a shadow, it also drops quickly that's why Nasa an Boeing suit have those big plug. Those are for a water cooling / heating that goes through the fabric of the space suit. Space X ... lacking it of course... Once again, congratulation on mister Musk for delivering an half baked idea and fans of Space X thinking that this is the FUTUREEEEE. Spoiler alert, they'll select Boeing...
@andromededp5316

The crew dragon suit's umbilical port is on the thigh instead of the chest (or belly in Starliner's case). Also, the sun/shade exposure problem with cooling is relevant for extravehicular (EVA) suits, while both the starliner ans dragon suits are intra vehicular (IVA) suits designed to be worn only inside the vehicle, where solar exposure is not an issue. The ports are to plug on the life support system of the ship in case of a depressurization.

SpaceX uses more input from the Bearers of the Burden (Astronauts) than Boeing does. Also, Boeing is so latently encumbered by past suit designs that it's legacy suits shows up a little in their new suits. SpaceX is designing their suits from the Ground up, so to speak.
