I found the interview with Elizabeth (in Part 2) to be among one of your bests to-date. I especially liked how she noted “NASA tends to hire incredibly experienced pilots.” Noting how everyone in the flight deck was over 45. As someone who is 52…I say good for NASA!

We at Airbp Christchurch International Airport were fuelling SOFIA during its Southern deployment to Christchurch NZ, we have done this on all its Southern missions so sad that it wont be coming back the guys looking after this beautiful old girl were great to work with she would leave Christchurch with between 230,000 and 251,000lbs of Jet A1/ FSII fuel on board our fuelling vehicles injected the anti icing additive into the fuel as we pumped it on.

I started working on the SOFIA project at Pinal Air Park while still working on both of NASA's B747 Shuttle Carriers, doing major modification and repair work on both airplanes. The SOFIA project was something I was bidding on and it progressed to even construction plans for the special hangar at the park. Unfortunately, it did not happen there. I think it was a magnificent project, exciting for young people and future scientists and engineers. In Memory of Mike Gima.

I watch the Flight Channel quite a bit, and I believe the channel owner has a misunderstanding regarding the “sterile cockpit rule”. By this, he has essentially points to aviation accidents as direct/indirect violation of this rule. He seems to indicate that the pilots should NEVER discuss non-aviation topics relating to the safety of the flight. As an example in one accident the plane had taxi’d to the runway. They had already completed their pre-takeoff checklists and briefings, and were merely waiting for three planes ahead of them (about a 15-20 minute wait). In this instance the pilots talked about various (non-aviation) topics. Once cleared for take-off, the cockpit became “sterile” again. These videos are concrete examples that the intent/spirit of the rule is to be enforced ONLY during certain critical phases of the flight. You can see in this video (containing some of the most experienced aviators in the world), during non-critical phases of the flight they discuss whatever. Again I am not a pilot but this is my understanding. I watch a LOT of cockpit videos, and have yet to see anyone violate this rule (again during critical phases) and in 100% of the videos, during non-critical phases the crew talk about whatever they please.

These videos get better and better. Mixed feelings about that airplane, sure they did name it after L*ndbergh so I can see why they kept the name for historical reasons, but going an extra step to honor that family seems unnecessary and a little unsettling considering the history between the US, Germany, and the L*ndbergh name.
