Well done to the scientists and engineers at JPL and NASA who managed to keep the Rover operating for So long, far beyond its expected lifetime and the Rover has been one of NASA and JPL’s most outstanding Successes. But as was said in the video, reality has to be faced. It is now January and still nothing has been heard From the Rover. With each day that passes without contact, the chances of recontacting the vehicle gets less and less. It has been over 6 months now since the Rover was last heard. The overwhelming likelihood now is that its batteries And instruments sustained fatal damage from the storm. I, for one, always believed that if the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers lasted long enough, it would be a fierce dust storm that would kill them off, and that indeed seems almost Certainly to be the case for Opportunity. I believe it is almost the time, if it has not occurred already, to say goodbye to Opportunity and to thank Opportunity for the Magnificent work it has done over many years. It will always have a very special place in the history of Martian Exploration. But now is the the time to work on new vehicles. The big concern of course is that a big dust storm could take out The next solar-powered vehicle before it spends a lot of time on the planet. With Opportunity, of course, the end of its Mission is only a small disappointment, as it long ago had fulfilled all its scientific objectives. But a dust storm taking out A brand new probe would not be a disappointment, it would be a disaster. Fortunately, the new Insight lander landed After the dust storm, and will probably not be affected by another one, not at least until its mmission has been Achieved, although it is unwise to be complacent.
