My friends and I used the Drake equation to calculate the number of cats in our respective neighborhoods. The answers varied WILDLY, and none of them were remotely close. Yes, we actually went around and asked people if they owned a cat and if so, how many. I personally can say I only missed a few houses and tried to get in contact with everyone. It was a very interesting, albeit very nerdy, experiment.

First: how’s Pete? Second: amazing story. As an animal lover I try to understand how animals think. As long as you don’t compare them to humans and the way humans act and respect them, you can get a strong bond. That also makes Communication in a certain hight possible. I wonder how far we can communicate with marine live nowadays.

We communicate in a unique way, most animals communicate in very complex ways with body language playing as much or more than vocalizations do. I would imagine early humans were much the same bus as we developed new technologies we adapted to new ways to communicate and now we rely far less on communication the way our animal companions do. This was a very interesting story.

@cascadesouthernmodeltrains7547
@cascadesouthernmodeltrains7547 4 ай бұрын
@@MichaelWinter-ss6lx No, I was just referring to the fact that the body language plays a much smaller part in us humans than it does with animals. Plus we have also the ability to communicate via written language which is also very unique to us only. No other animal on this planet has developed a written language. We are unique and because of our use of various forms of technology we have lost what most other animals still do regularly.

Well now, that story took an unexpected turn. Something I've thought about is that even if a species is intelligent, that doesn't automatically mean it will develop technology at all, let alone radio. Dolphins are believed to be quite smart, but they don't have any real way to work with tools and don't really seem too interested in learning to talk to humans. Some apes can operate simple machines and can learn limited sign language but don't seem too interested in much more than that, even when spending much of their life around humans. Assuming there are alien species out there, even intelligent ones, they may simply just not be the same "type" of intelligence that humans are, the type that builds tools, machines, multiple languages, and civilization. All of the assumptions made in things like the Drake Equation are just humans projecting our own image on the universe and expecting to see something similar, because we have ourselves as the only data point.
@youreale

@@RCAvhstape Whoa... there is nothing hateful in my comment (certainly not my intention). My point is that our notion of intelligence might be flawed because we base our benchmarks on creatures with less brain capacity. Perhaps the baseline of intelligence in our galaxy (assuming we’re not alone) is far superior to ours, meaning we may not be as smart as we think we are. Got it?
