Hi Victoria, your videos have helped me so much, I’m not a professional singer but you have helped me understand my speaking voice, and also singing over my guitar (I was collapsing my body over the guitar). I think people experience cognitive dissonance when they hear me speak because I’m a relatively small, blond woman with an extremely low voice. I’ve learned I have to modify my voice for other people’s comfort, but your videos have helped me figure out how to do that better. How do I know whether I’m a bass or a tenor if I want to sign up for your course? Thanks for your videos, hugely helpful! 🙏

@@emilycross4527 Hi there Emily! 👋 Just a heads up that you may actually be something called a "contralto" (in particular, a Dramatic Contralto based on how low you described your voice to be) Watch the video "Time in a Bottle - cover (Jim Croce) - Dramatic Contralto Version by AMADEA" to check if that seems similar to your own voice. If not, then watch the video "The Contralto Voice" by super vocal and see if any of those singers feel similar and let us know which ones seem closest to your tone (& range if possible) 👍 Also, for the record, I'm in no way affiliated with Victoria or the Healthy Vocal Technique channel; I just used to be in choir in high school (secondary ed.) & college (post-secondary ed.), and I like learning about vocal stuff Hope this helps! 🤞

I love how you mentioned holding the nose to check. Thanks for clarifying that Nasality is okay when needed in the song, but beware because it can get stuck in the nose and then it starts sounding Nasal I used to have that wooly voice quality because I was confusing nasal resonance with nasality. That's been corrected since I fully understand that nasal resonance is a key element to mixed voice. With practice, I've learned that certain sounds must be nasal. But since those sounds usually follow a vowel, then I carry the vowel with nasal resonance and just let in the m or n really quick.

As usual, every tutorial you give us is so eye opening. Thank you Victoria. Please allow me to ask, are there drinks one can take to improve their singing? For example, some people encourage lemon, ginger and a few natural spices. I am also wondering, is it really necessary to avoid all sugar, caffeine and some spices foods? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you Victoria. Happy new year to you. 💕💞

The one thing that makes nasality is the tongue. If I breathe through my nose, the back of my tongue naturally blocks the mouth cavity so air can go through my nose. Anytime air is coming out my mouth, the back of my tongue is not risen. Therefore, in order to sing nasal vowels, the back of the tongue should not be blocking the mouth cavity. If the tongue is not blocking the mouth cavity and I am making a nasal sound, that is resonating the nasal cavity correctly right? Should I always try to resonate the nasal cavity when singing? Can there be too much resonance? Thanks for the video God Bless : )

I had to have my pallet shortened, and I think they over shortened it. It felt like years of voice training went down the drain because now I cannot control when I get nasally. I have a wide range, but I am lower scale for a woman, however... if it sounds nasally, is it even nice to hear? I need a good singing sesh, though, or I get legit cranky... so now I just seclude myself and sing what I want. I do miss being able to sing, and not sound nasally. I keep trying, I didn't build my voice in one sitting the first time, either. 😕

Is closing the pathway to the nasal cavity (thus switching off nasal resonance) different from arching the soft palate? I can do that without the yawn posture or creating an overall darker sound.
@Victoria-Victorious
@Victoria-Victorious 2 жыл бұрын
There are different degrees of arching the soft palate. Arching your palate does close off the nasal port (to avoid nasality which is in the nose), but true nasal resonance occurs behind the nose, as discussed in this video. If you go too far into the yawn, you will get that overly dark, swallowed sound.
@fidrewe99
@fidrewe99 2 жыл бұрын
@@Victoria-Victorious but this is exactly what I don't understand. If I'm closing the nasal port completely, nasal resonance (resonance occurring within the nasal cavity) breaks down as well. I can do this and raise the soft palate to a maximum without the slightest darkening of the voice. Alternatively I can darken the sound, while keeping the nasal port wide open (and therefore sustaining nasal resonance) when I widen the space back there by lowering the larynx. Yawning is associated with a combination of both movements.
@Victoria-Victorious
@Victoria-Victorious 2 жыл бұрын
I would have to hear you to tell for sure what you are doing. I think you are confusing the air emitting from nasal port (nasality) vs nasal resonance. They are 2 different things as I explain in the video. You may be arching your palate slightly and not realize it. Great if it means you are not nasal.

@fidrewe99
@fidrewe99 2 жыл бұрын
I do see the difference between nasality and nasal resonance. Nasality as you define it occurs when the soft palate is hanging too low. Resonance in the nasal cavity on the other hand occurs unless the soft palate is too high and the nasal port is shut completely. I'm just saying that, while closing the nasal port makes my voice sound less balanced, my voice doesn't get dark or dull. Dullness only occurs, when I widen the throat by lowering the larynx too much, which is completely independent of what I'm doing with the soft palate.

Of the nose but not in the nose -De Reszke (I think). This one will take some careful listening and practice on my part. Important because I do hear what you mean by the difference between a ringing sound and a wooly one. I think of the latter as the voice 'in the bucket' or being dragged along by the melody. On an unrelated note, in a previous video you spoke of using the laryngeal tilt to improve the tone but in my reading I've only come across this technique as a means to change the vocal fold length for the upper register. So... if you discuss the upper register and the head voice again, would you also comment a bit on the laryngeal tilt and where it fits into singing in the upper register? Best wishes.
@Victoria-Victorious
@Victoria-Victorious 2 жыл бұрын
In classical singing, the slight tilt generally begins in the middle voice and increases as the pitch rises. The tilt helps produce a sweeter, more melodious tone for classical, as opposed to a more speech-like sound.
