The dragstrip will always be missed. Some of my best memories were made there and now it’s just all turned dirt, but most people would look back at that place and see just a pile of dirt and asphalt. But me… in that little parking lot toward the back of the big NASCAR track, I’ve watched cars do 200 miles an hour and I watched mine do about 150.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of this track is sold off. I don't really see NASCAR coming back to Southern California anytime soon. Especially with that terrible race at the Coliseum. Fontana will join Riverside and Ontario sadly.

Building distribution centers pays better than having a racetrack. Or an airport. Between LA and San Bernardino, SoCal Speedway, Fontana drag strip and Fontana airport have fallen to distribution centers and what remains of SoCal will surely become another memory. Likely without another race ever being held there.

Back in the early 1990s, we used lightweight concrete on a new freeway offramp that had organic material below from an old creek bed. It was cost prohibitive to remove the bad material so this was used as a lightweight fill material. We poured it in 2' lifts to a depth of around 15 or 20'. The ramp is still there, today!!

Hey DLowe - Thank you for the great story. It is cool seeing techniques that last the test of time and get very little acknowledgement to the point that most people don't even know the difference. @danlowe86846 ай бұрын
@@AcAdapterInc I'm not sure either, without seeing the civil engineering plans. And, FYI, 'lightweight concrete' is a misleading term in that it is not structural. It is simply lighter than the normally used sand and gravel fill material. It is similar to baking a cake in that it will collapse on itself if vibrated during the first hours after pouring. It has no coarse aggregate (gravel) - only sand, cement and an air entraining additive. My guess is that it is a section of roadway (or speedway?). They likely will build it up within two feet of finished grade, then place a layer of sand, a layer of gravel, and finish with a layer of bituminous or concrete pavement - much like any roadway.

@@AcAdapterInc I watched them build Fontana, they should have spent more money on the surrounding property, that giant parking area on the North side of the track is only for first time retarded people that don't mind walking 1.5 miles to the front door. They should have developed a full blown stand out train station with an entrance and exit tunnel under the infield straight to the activities and right at the entrance, where the elevators to the upper deck. I wish they would have elevated the back stretch about 5' and gave it just a little 1° or 2° slant, the first 25 rows from the bottom up can't see shit on the backstretch. The infield RV parking was always a mish mash of stupid. I understand why the track is situated the way it is, KEEP THE SUN OUT OF THE FANS FACE. I do love facing Mt. Baldy it's a favorite hiking area. The Northwest Entrance/Exit was always bullshit. The Southwest Entrance/Exit competing with the hauler's and the helicopters and 50,000 people on foot is bullshit. Then Fontana PD busy themselves all race creating the most inconvenient convoluted exit strategies especially that Southwest corner, you want I-10 West you are fucked. There is so much open space in the Inland Empire I don't know why they used pry bars and bad ideas to sandwich the track between RR tracks and the steel plant. I loved your video, just getting some kind of update by someone not actively trying to deceive me made up for two years of lies. Thank you!

I continue to think that turning Auto Club Speedway into a short track should provide for great NASCAR racing action. I attended a lot of races there over the years, but the track was so wide and the straights so long that the racing action was rarely close. Frankly, that was often boring to watch. I think the best and closest racing that I ever watched there was five-wide at IndyCar's final race there. I wonder how close NASCAR is to constructing the short track here. I am encouraged that a lot of the old infrastructure (grandstands and buildings) has been left in place. Hopefully that means that NASCAR has plans to use it again. As they proved for three years running paving a race track inside the LA Coliseum (for The CLASH at the Coliseum), once NASCAR makes a decision to proceed with construction, that gets done quickly. I wonder if, in the interim, NASCAR might give us a street race in the greater L.A. area? Jan

I am a Construction biz owner and yes, we need to keep the work force busy but I'm also a car guy/racing fan and we need that too.
