This series isn't limited to just drivers, it also includes key people in the sport of NASCAR. The biggest bust of them all is without a doubt Brian France.
Will look how Brian France took a once great motorsports giant and turned it into a shell of its former self.

It should also be noted that Jim France has made his presence known at races. Brian never did, and that was I think his ultimate failure. He failed to connect directly with the fans. Both Bills and Jim are connecting with the fans in person. Sure, they're not perfect, but who is? There's a difference between being not perfect and being a complete failure. One of the Frances was a failure; the other 3 are just not perfect. Take a guess at who's who.

The primary problem is the illegitimate Chase format. The Chase came into being because a driver won the championship on points alone, without winning a single race. All you had to do to fix the problem was increase the points awarded for winning a race. No need to come up with an unsuitable and artificial 'playoff' format. Now you've got a system where the points you earn during the season are in effect thrown out, and the 16th-place points earner still has a chance for the championship. The plate-track races have become un-watchable, as they resemble a game of Tetris at 200 m.p.h., until they succumb to 'The Big One'. Then there is the nonsense with 'stage points' and 'playoff points', and draconian penalties for minor glitches in the pits. I'm not a fan of Kyle Busch, but he accumulated the most points last season, and should be the champion, not Joey Lagano. I understand Nascar wanting to guarantee excitement during the final races each season, but don't create a 'winner-takes-all' joke. Each of the 36 races should count the same.

Anthony Kernich that nepotism hurt Indycar the most. Mari Hulman George daughter of Tony Hulman screwed up big time when she made her son and grandson of Tony Hulman Tony George president of IMS in 1989 and just gave him unchecked power to nearly destroy the Indy 500 and all of Indycar. I can’t believe he thought USAC drivers were better than CART drivers in 1996 to create the 25/8 rule.

I once worked for a family owned company that at one time was larger than Kodak in the film/printing industry and had not had a layoff in over 88 years. But 3 years after the kids took over, it went bankrupt. The great "Harvard Business School" cancer strikes again.
@robminmonaca
@robminmonaca 5 жыл бұрын
That is Just what happened to Indycar Tony George was a third generation family member. The first gen was the great Tony Hulman and created USAC but he died and it fizzled out and only lasted to just run the Indy 500 race but the Organization shrunk big-time by the end of the 70s and CART formed. Mari Hulman came on board in the late 70s and 80s and she joined the board when the Indy 500 was still very popular having CART at the Indy 500 then Tony needing something to do after not doing well in Indy lights was put into the position of IMS president and his mom wanted young blood and thought he was very smart and because she probably saw her father in his eyes and just let him nearly destroy their family business.

I'm 65 years old. I've followed NASCAR since 1964. The excitement is gone. Thanks Brian France. When's the Oxy-Moron 500?
@VictorySpeedway
@VictorySpeedway 5 жыл бұрын
I'm 65, too. I was a NASCAR fan ever since ABC's Wide World of Sports played a 10-minute clip of the Daytona 500. In the northeast, and because I was 11 years old, I had no access to live NASCAR racing, so had to follow my favorites (Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Fireball Roberts, Curtis Turner, et al) through scant newspaper coverage and an occasional radio report. When NASCAR hit TV big time in 1979, I watched all the races I could. It was something I'd waited for for years and years. Now, I don't bother. Racing is as boring as baseball. In fact, I've given up on all professional sports. I do, however, visit local dirt tracks from time to time to see local heroes battle it out for fifty dollars and a trophy. Much more exciting. One more thing: Australian Supercar races are what NASCAR could have been. Yes, they turn right a lot, but the cars seem to be closer to showroom stock than the cookie-cutter rolling billboards that run in packs every Sunday.

Jeremy Mayfield got a raw deal, IMO. He had spoken out against Ray Evernham having an affair with Erin Crocker when everyone else in the team had kept quiet, which was, of course, an embarrassment to the sport (rather than an embarrassment to Evernham, which it really was). It isn't a stretch to think that Evernham pulled some strings in retaliation. NASCAR made Mayfield look like a pariah, especially when he refused to bend and admit defeat. Now that Brian France has been unmasked as a drunk and a junkie, Mayfield's side sounds a lot more credible in hindsight.

@@rooseveltbrentwood9654 I'm not so sure. I had a blood test performed as part of a new job, and the lab called me and told me that I had tested positive for meth. They inquired about the prescription meds I was taking and when I told them one in particular, they said that could produce a false positive and to bring proof that it was legally prescribed. Mayfield said the same thing, and it wouldn't have been too difficult for a billionaire to pay off the lab. He ended up taking another sample at an independent lab and the results were different, with the medical folks saying that a false positive was very possible. I only say this because I had such an experience, so I know it can happen.

En how, it's like the engine change rule that came when Junior Johnson's guys could change an engine in 20 minutes and get Cale Yarborough back on the track, this kind of dedication and outright skill propelled Cale and Junior to 3 consecutive championships, in typical sour grapes reaction instead of everyone else meeting the challenge the top guys are dragged down, FUBAR. Fast forward to Jeremy Mayfield, I still believe to this day that whole thing was cooked up by Ray Evernham after the rumor mill revealed he was sticking his dick in Erin Crocker, too much off track crap ruins the on track optics, all of this since big money entered the "sport".

It was Junior Johnson who brought Winston to NASCAR first. He went to them seeking something like a $50,000 sponsorship for his team, and the bigwigs at Winston laughed & said: "We were looking to invest at least a half million". The rest is history. (Unlike most fans, I don’t really notice stages having much of an impact, since it’s mostly eliminated the phantom/fake debris cautions that plagued NASCAR in the late 00’s/early 10’s)
@catjudo1
@catjudo1 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the fake cautions have gone away. I think they've been codified into the Stage cautions. I gave the stages a chance, thinking that they might be like the heat races at the short track, but they're not like that at all. They're just another excuse to throw bullshit cautions, and as a dubious bonus, the points system makes even less sense now. If NASCAR's points system worked, at least one other sanctioning body would have adopted it. None have. NASCAR needs to take a long, hard look at Australian Supercars and British Touring Car Championship, because those series put on shows that NASCAR can only dream of now.
@DDS029

The NHRA uses a similar style of points. They can get away with it though because no matter what, like other sports that Brian was trying emulate, it's one on one, at least per round.

Another phenomenal story my friend, I love what you are doing here. I was a die-hard Nascar fan growing up in the 80s and 90s, and while I will admit I started losing interest after the death of Earnhardt and especially when Junior started performing badly afterwards which is completely understandable. But once the car tomorrow came in was when I really started just trying to grasp at straws to continue watching. Then came the next cars, all the rules changes and I barely watch it anymore. The politics of the whole sport just got out of control and it really wasn't enjoyable anymore. There was a time when I planned my whole weekend around being able to watch the race, now if I catch one I catch one. I can't even tell you who won the championship the last few years, all I know is Logano won recently and I liked that because I am from Connecticut as well. I don't remember what year was whether it was last year or the year before doesn't really matter I guess. I thoroughly enjoy what you do here, thank you for all your time effort and research

I have to be honest with you, folks. Up until the past year or two, I was almost never critical of this sport. I never thought there was anything wrong with what Brian France was doing. Until 2016, the only thing I heavily criticized NASCAR for was when they scrapped single-car qualifying in 2014. I was fooled by NASCAR media into thinking that the sport was doing fine. Then, I stopped watching from June of 2016 to May of 2017. But when I came back, I started following NASCAR KZbinrs and began to find out fascinating things about the sport that I never knew. For instance, the fact that NASCAR was VERY popular from the 90s until the mid-2000s, and that it is very UNPOPULAR today. The story of NASCAR's rise and fall fascinated me. For several months, I've been wishing for one source that would tell me all that went wrong, and this video does. Thanks for making this video, Darian, and showing us how truly......stuBBORN Brian France was ;)

9:48 I miss Jimmy Spencer. 10:11 Gordon was directly impacted by the MWR scandal. He was in the top 10 in points before the caution for Bowyer's spin came out but then after that, he was one point out and ended up missing it (initially) by that much, so he was impacted by it. If Bowyer hadn't spun, Gordon (points) and Newman (wild card) would've made it, instead of Logano (points) and Truex (wild card) like how it initially ended up being until Truex got docked points and Gordon was added in. Honestly, all of MWR should've been disqualified from the Chase that year in the first place. Also, in 2014, NASCAR brought group qualifying to plate tracks beginning at Talladega, not beginning in 2015. Group qualifying was killed off at plate tracks after the 2015 Daytona 500. Those things aside, I enjoyed the video. It was depressing to see, but it put everything into context of just how much NASCAR has changed and declined since Brian came to power. Hopefully with Jim France in charge now, we're going to be on the right track.

And this is one of the greatest examples of the damages nepotism can do to any institution. Brian rode on his daddy and granddaddy's coattails, all the while conjuring up ways to change the sport his family built that they definitely wouldn't have approved. Look where NASCAR is now, and the whole state of motorsports in the United States. All the while, somewhere in North Carolina Jeremy Mayfield is smiling...

What Brian France did to Nascar is really bad. Teresa Earnhardt did a whole lot worse. She took what Dale Earnhardt Sr had worked his whole life to build for his family and relationships with his kids to flushed it all down the drain. While not letting "His Kids" get any of it. Now that was really F-ed up.
