There are both replicas and originals in the Eifel Rallye Festival . The Audi with the red and blue stripes is a replica of Bobby Unser´s 1986 PikesPeak car. The plain white Audi is a restored original, and was prepared by the „heritage division“ of Audi Motorsport, driven by Stig Blomqvist in this event. It was originally used in the Olympus rally 1985 in the United States.

First unknown was Peugeot 306 Maxi, next was a Renault 5 Turbo. The old Toyota is a Celica, and after that was a Escort RS2000 MKII. After that was a Peugeot 205 T16, Group B rally car that dominated WRC after the Audi Quattro. After the Delta, was a Lancia 037, last rear wheel drive to won the WRC before the Audi Quatro. And the pronunciation is the second that you mentioned. Skoda is a Czech automobile manufacturer, since 1925, and this is a Skoda Fabia, with a shared base of the VW Polo. They need to have licence plates, even modern ones, to circulate on the roads between stages. So, they a road legal, technically.

The "weird" car was an old beautiful Citroën DS 21. USeveral times winner of the Monte Carlo Ralies, the Daccar Rallies, etc. The older cars are original vehcles, kept in perfect shape. Acctually, the newer models require extensive maintenance during the rallies and obviously between rallies. All vehicles must be registered and fully legal Rally-inspectors go through every single machine to ascertain if they are in compliance with strict Rally regulatns. The Old Class B was unbelievable. After some accidents, namely the tragic one during an edition of the Rally of Portugal, tougher regulations and limitations rendered Class B Cars more "civilized" and less lethal. Thank you for another spectacular Video.

As a Czech person I am really proud that you even know Skoda exist well done and thanks Ian (btw my name is the Czech version Jan pronounced similary :D) The car is Fabia WRC it was the second attempt from Skoda at WRC car first being the Octavia WRC sedan. Fabia WRC was the last car in WRC Colin McRae drove otherwise it was bit meh tbh potential but lot of DNFs :D Skoda had massive success in 1500s and lower classes from the 70s up to 2000s. Great cars like the Porsche of the east 130RS won Monte Carlo, Favorit dominated 1500s with 1300 engine for years and Felicia after was quite succesful WRCs not so much but awesome ad for Skoda esp in UK where it was seen as a joke car due to shoddy reliability due to soviet planning of things but still far best car in eastern block next to Ladas and Trabants etc. Now Skoda is dominating WRC2 with the new Fabia succesor(4gen) of this Fabia (1gen) in the video.

The Citroën DS has hydropneumatic suspension, a very smooth ride and some extra tricks (self leveling, selectable ride height). Also in the DS the brake pedal isn't a pedal, but a rubber dome on the floor panel which is tied into the hydropneumatics. Just by looking too violent at it would make it brake like hitting a wall.

12:04 You mean the Citroen? It had a 4-cylinder, engine and transmission in the front. There used to be movies with Louis DeFunes where the whole rear end ripped off and he was still driving. A legend. Single-spoke steering wheel, hydropneumatic suspension with central hydraulic system, brake discs on the gearbox, cornering light and many attachments made of fiber-reinforced plastic. Was built from 1967-1975. The BMW has a longitudinal engine and front transmission and rear drive. Classic like the old US cars. Skoda is Volkswagen. They use the same platforms, technology and components. Usually they are a little cheaper and even better processed, since in the East they place more value on corrosion protection. A friend drives an Octavia turbo diesel with DSG transmission, it runs great. We had one as a company car with a 1.9l TDi and 66 kW, which easily made 220 km/h.

Skoda have a long and proud history in rallying dating back long before they became a part of the VW/Audi Group. In the 1970s and 80s Skoda entries came 1st in their class at the RAC Rally(UK) for 17 seasons in a row!!! The company began in Czechoslovakia in the 1850s and is one of the 5 oldest continuously surviving automobile manufacturers in the world(alongside Daimler, Peugeot, Opel and Tatra). Their road cars had a very bad and somewhat unfair reputation when they started selling them in the UK and became the butt of many jokes. They were definitely cheap and no frills but they were often more reliable than a lot of their British counterparts at the time (cough)British Leyland(cough) and have been a very common sight on British roads from the 1970's onwards, so they must have been doing something right. Since they became part of VW group they don't have any such issues.

Yeah Skodas got a bad rep in the 80s due to exports. Skodas of that time were essentialy stuck in development limbo (not to mention developmental dead end with rear-engine cars) due to tanking economy and tightening political control (in essence "we don't care if you are car design prodigy, you forgot to kiss the Partie's a**es often and publically so we will make you janitor). It still was arguably the best comblock car you could get in Britain in its price range. There was also notable incident when the Czechoslovak president (who was Slovak at a time) arbitrarily decideded to move all racing development from Mlada Boleslav to somewhere in Slovakia and when Skoda's president told him that it is impossible as there wouldn't be enough skilled workers, he was fired on the spot and even though the plan fell trough you can guess which company was on political s**tlist.

The "H" at the end of a German plate (like on that stratos at the beginning) is a plate given to cars that were registered at least 30 years ago, are in very good condition and either stock or modified in a period-correct way. People who don't actually drive their cars (much) usually don't go through the trouble, so the cars that wear it usually can be spotted out and about in traffic^^ Lesser used, worse condition or "out of era" modified cars tend to just go with a red plate, like the black BMW E30.

14:21 Škoda is my favorite brand! I might be a bit biased as Škoda is a Czech brand made in the Czech Republic and I am Czech, but I think their design was and still is always fresh and timeless. The sound of the Fabia WRC or the Octvavia WRC is my most favorite rally sound. The Fabia you see here is from the very early 00's when VW just took over the brand. The ''civilian'' versions are really good and fun too, I honestly wouldn't pick anything else than a Škoda. Today they are owned by VW and unfortunately they don't operate in the US, but you should check out more about this brand as Škoda was always quite a big part of rally. I see many comments already, but I'll put in my replies as well: - the Corolla was a WRC car, run between 1997 and 1999, it won 4 WRC events - the Peugeot is a 305 Kit car. It ran in F2 category, meaning 2 liter naturally aspirated 300 hp front wheel drive cars. Yes, they are very sharp, nimble, and responsive. - the stanced Renault 5 had a group B counterpart, I'm not sure what category this one was in. The reason behind the wider rear track is, that doing this pushes the car towards understeer. It can help calm down cars, that are tail happy. - the Skoda Fabia WRC was a nice rally car for its time. Perhaps not most succesful in WRC, but had lots of success in national championships all over the world. - Yes, all rally cars have to road legal, because you need to drive from one stage to another on public roads. You can drive them on the road, but due to the clutch, the brakes, the tyres, how loud they are, how stiff they are, and how expensive it is to run them, it's only done during rallies, otherwise their team carries them around on trailers.

It's always nice to see these old rally legends race, they're so fun to see and so pleasant to hear. I see that there was both the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 Rally Car and the Pikes Peak one (the one in the video preview) and also there's the Peugeot 205 T16 Pikes Peak (the yellow one with ridiculously huge rear spoiler). The Citroen DS21 it was actually a good rally car, it won many rallies especially the african ones that were and are known for being difficult and that puts drivers and cars under heavy stress. The Lancia 037 was a fantastic RWD mid-engine car that won the 1983 WRC Championship winning the last championship for a RWD car. And for the question about how to pronounce Lancia actually the correct one is the one you are using and incredibly you're the only American that I know that pronounces correctly :)

The DS was very aerodynamic, and not just for its day.. It has hydropneumatic suspension, which gives a really good ride. The biggest issue for the DS was that its engine was an older design, having originated before WW2.

There is that legend (or fact, if you will) that François Miterrand, then president of France, while being driven in one was victim to an assassination atempt. But all the shooter managed to do was shoot one tire off. Still, with only three wheels, the driver was still able to drive the DS for several kilometers (still being chased?), to safety. I heard or read that story years ago, but that's the gist of it, and apparently it was true.

@@jeanackle It is a true story "when De Gaulle was being driven with his wife from the Elysee Palace to Orly Airport on the Avenue de la Liberation, 12 OAS gunmen opened fire on the presidential Citroën DS. As History tells it, “A hail of 140 bullets, most of them coming from behind, killed two of the president’s motorcycle bodyguards, shattered the car’s rear window and punctured all four of its tires.” Other reports I’ve read said the bullets blew out two or three tires instead."

Hi. I just randomly landed on your rally reaction videos. I like racing times to times, but I am not fan, but ! I like your enthusiasm, so I let there some pieces of info for you. I hope you'll enjoy. 11:23 This is (out of racing) the most legendary french car. Citroën DS. Made in the years 1955-1975. It was a revolutionary car, including hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension. It can loose a wheel and still run ! :'p In racing it had some wins around 1960. But its most legendary achievement was to keep track during 2 different attacks aiming president Charles de Gaulle, also known as Général de Gaulle. On the 2nd attack, the full standard/serial DS escaped, accelerating on drenched bad road, both front tyres flat and 14 bullet holes. At the arrival, the general said "This time it was tengent". Mrs de Gaulle had only one, but famous, sentence "I hope the chickens got nothing". "Chickens" is french slang for "cops" ! But she was referring to poultry prep they were carrying in the trunk. These days, we have a duo of car enthousiast youtubers who are becoming famous. Not only to car lovers, but all public ! Now, this week they have a stand in the prestigious Paris Motor Show. It's a premiere that these guys, so casual, can have a stand there. I throw some links below. I hope automatic translation works fine !! These videos are very cool. Group B history : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ26k597fdimqbc They try ORIGINAL Group B cars. In 2nd and 3rd videos, Gian Mario, the owner, and former pilot at the time of Group B existence, do a bit of demo :'p kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIS3eqt_oNFmkJI (one of the last Group B cars) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX_NpXZmaZp6h6s (not Group B. One of the lastest Group 5 before Group B was created. Much less powerful than Group B) kzbin.info/www/bejne/kImaqI2NjtF9hdE (Group B. In between the cars seen in the 2 previous videos) (the red car is one of the 220 serial ones made to homologate. It is the first time a manufacturer didn't think any second to design an easy and convenient car for serial. So they had a better base for the race version ! The white one in the video has raced in 1982 and crashed. Then been restored.) Here they try a new car, Peugeot 208 Rally4. Factory modified. It is 1.2L 208HP 1080kg for entry level in rally. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoGXgIikqqp-hdE Paris motor show. They expose rally cars, group B cars, Pagani cars... But the masterpiece is none of them. It is their project of 1000 HP Fiat Multipla. The most ugliest family car of all times ! x) turned into the most outrageous race car. Start by one of the youtubers : kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHWTqmiDhshpb6M The stand : kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6CVq3SGpL6VgM0 Have a good time (I really hope subtitles work fine)

The weird Car, a Citroën DS 21 from the middle 70s -- they won serious Rallies, namely Monte-Carlo. A little respect, plz, as George Constanza would say. Regarding the little Renault 5 Turbo, the Rally models had in fact wider rear axles. And yes, the vehicles feature license plates. And most of them are certified for street-driving. Observing regulations. Engine noises, flame-throwing at Mc Donalds ain't going to receive medals from the Police. A friend of mine here in Portugal owns an Alpine Renault formerly raced by a famous driver. That car won lots of Rallies, namely Monte Carlo, Corsica, etc. The Car, worth zillions, is part of his collection. A fortune is spent in maintenance, insurance, etc. The vehicle is taken to circuits and for service on a Trailer. One night he was in a famous Avenue in Lisbon, after a nice dinner. Upon leaving the Restaurant he saw his bad-ass Alpine stopped in a red light a few meters away. Making all the Rally noises that are music for real fans. The light changed and the Alpine took off like a rocket. A Mechanic from the fancy Garage, servicing the vehicle, was joy-riding through Lisbon with his Girl-Friend . Probably he had a great night. However his promising career as a Mechanic took a turn for the worse.

5:50 When the Renault 5 was new they did a "Renault 5 Cup" where they had famous race drivers compete in a fleet of these, as a "gimmick" during F1 weekends. First one was a disaster, like half the cars crashed. They changed the suspension and the second time went better. The Renault 5 Turbo was a homologation car for rallying, with a mid-engine layout and rear wheel drive. They are wider in the back, mostly to create space for wider tires but also for the radiator and intercooler.

The Stratos was the very first kit car especially build for Rally. It was the car that started the homologation procedure. 200 cars of a model needed to be fabricated ans sold as a roadcar in ordered for it to get a homologation to go rallying. The Stratos was especially designed and build as a car to (only) go rallying. It's a tubular chassis that uses a Ferrari Engine (out of the 308).

The car you saw on 12:00 is a french Citroen or Citrön writen, from the 70ties, the shape is very french artist crazy from out of space design , a bit like chevy or bentley, typical bullet shape, the shape was mostly done to have aerodynamics so wind do better fow off the car and not slow it down. Also when it looks funny , the car was loved by many people, because it had one of the best shock absorber at this time and hydraulics, it was the 1st series car had brakeboosters onto the Disc brakes, it had swiveling headlights to light up curves and an automatic level control with hydralics , it did win 2 times the rally of monte carlo. Also you could very fast and easy change tires on the car by hydraulic lifting it, there was just some kinda bolt not to make the car drop, the car did get lifted as soon as you did start the engine and lifted down when turning the engine off. I do not know if there were different variants , but as far as I know they were Front wheel drive. In Germany we did call this car "the shark" der Hai , because of the shape and there was a small version of citoen , we did call "the duck." Die Ente. This car was a serial produced car a bit ahead of its time and the car of some presidents in Europe. The american mexican would love this car , maybe not in respect to its shape , but the hydraulics , hehehe. Roads in Europe were often bumpy specially over the landside, with this car you fly over ever hole in the way, if it was not there at all, because of the automatic leveling and hydraulics combined with very good shock absorbers, its was very luxery and famous for have a good, stressless ride. In Europe are small cars also very often, because we got cities which are very old do not have "Roads" in this sense more passage between houses and you will never get rid of historical , expensive , very old houses and cities , just to build a road , there are specially build very small cars for all those people , often in old Cities in France, Greece or Italy ... to have something better then just scooters and bikes, which will go through the small passages, some got even the door in the front where the stearing wheel is, so you can get out of the car even when left and right is a wall. in the USA its their build a new land from scratch and mostly big roads for the car industry and more mobile flow. There are some rallies where not only high tuned cars taking part of , some people drive their expensive and rare old timers , like they wanna show how good cars were build even in the 50ties to 80ties and for them its mostly to reach the goal at the end of the track and nostaligia , not so much of winning this. There are many different rallies some even only for old timer cars, some for buggies, some even for motocycles, some for Trucks , some for Jeeps, then some only limited by horse power so you can only drive very small cars, some are open for everyone with a rally licences, some are only open for high tuned car, there are local rallies , and of course the WRC World Rally Champoinship, there are very different Tracks and countries to challange , like Desert, jungle, Snow and Ice, Sand and gravel, Road and asphalt , some are very curvy and the car is tuned down to get all the power into the lowest gears for acceleration and some are more high speed where the car get tuned to more high speed power of course limited because there are bumps on the track you will not drive with 300km/h, but as fast as the track will allow it

Viewing a rally event involves watching a small segment of dirt as some cars fly past, then rushing to a spot for next segment and repeat process. In my childhood one of dads friends we used to go watch and we would race our friends between segments (not goating you) so we can be in a good spot when cars come through next segment. Certainly helps to have a local with you who knows all.the back roads, caus rally is not exactly in the city. It's a bit different to most motor racing where you sit in 1 spot all day. "Wider rear end" I haven't checked dimensions.. But I think the Stratos, delta, and 098 all had wider rear than front. I had others in mind, but by time I finished pasting Vegemite on my toast and got back to lounge room I'd forgotten. 7:55 Toyota Celica (rwd), I think 72 roughly...still love how those things look..not bad made into convertible either. I always noticed them as a kid caus they looked similar to dad's RX2. 13:02 Bluebird was a popular race car, including Bathurst I think..I was pretty young.. Someone else would know for sure. 13:17 was the 098 I mentioned above. The last of the Rear Wheelers duri g the Audi reign. Interesting stories about how they couldn't keep up with AWD on dirt and snow and bent some rules to compete, but dominated on the 'tarmac' tracks.

Lancia made FOUR Rally legends: The FULVIA won the last edition of the Internation Rally Championship, in 1972; The first WRC season was in 1973, and the Lancia STRATOS (group 4 car) won the manufacturer's three years in a row, between 1974 and 1976; The Lancia 037 (group B), the "bad boy" at 13:16, won the title in 1983; The Lancia Delta (group A) won the title six consecutive times, from 1987 to 1992. A few months ago, Chris Harris was driven by three rally legends by three rally legends (drivers) in three rally legends (Lancias): the Stratos, the Delta and the 037. You may or not find the introductory talk, and intermissions, a bit dull, but the footage from the actual driving is absolutely fabulous. 9:50 Rally cars in germany are required to be street-legal, since they have to drive to and in between stages. If they use a special "Motorsport registration" they do have a few exemptions, like being allowed open wastegates and airbag-deletes. But then they can only be used for official events. With normal or historic plates they got more restrictions/no exemptions, but can be driven whenever. A nice side-effect is that they have to adhere to certain noise-limits, meaning you usually don't need ear protection to watch a rally.
