Sébastien Loeb is recognized as the best rally driver in the world. In 2003, he finished second in the World Rally Championship. Subsequently, from 2004 to 2012, he won the title of world rally champion nine times in a row. At that time, Loeb held the majority of rally records. He is arguably the best driver in the world. In addition to being the first winner of three different world championships, he is the winner of the X Games, winner of the GT and Touring competitions.

I am willing to say, Seb may be the greatest car driver of all time. What he has done on the track, on paved, gravel and snowy roads (including Dakar and GT racing) and everything in between is probably unmatched. I mean - this is the dude who was not allowed to race F1, not because he was too bad but because he had not enough lower level closed circuit experience. If you want to pick one dude to ensure that any kind of car moves fast on any surface - he is the man.

Seb Loeb is a real GOAT. He retired from active rally racing a few years ago, but this year he was asked by Ford to test the new Puma rally car and will be competing in a few WRC races this year. In January he entered and won the Monte Carlo rally. The funny thing is that with the other Sebastian (Ogier), who is also in a similar status at Toyota, there were only two of them in contention for the win, the youngsters were nowhere to be found compared to them. These two have 17 WRC championship titles between them. The last 20 years have essentially been about them in rallying...

It's an impressive & heart-in-mouth run by Loeb and the 208 is a technological leap. B-U-T it seems too sanitized with a quiet BRRP, BRRRRP with every gear change and looking like it is driving on rails. Ari Vatanen's run in the 405 on gravel with the engine screaming it's lungs out, one hand steering & the other hand shielding the sun or changing gears really gets my pulse rate up. Hey IWrocker :) Just some information about this: The old record was set by "Walter Röhrl" in 1987 (He set a 10:47 as the last 1/3 of the road was still gravel back then) and lasted until it was broken by "Sebastian Loeb" in 2013. The most impressive thing is that you drive uphill into really thin air. The engine losses around 20-25% power if you compare start to finish. The topspeed of the car is not that high, it's around 150mph but the cornering and acceleration is just extreme. *EDIT* There is a fast corner with a very steep drop that is named "devil's playground" (Should be the left turn at 8:46 in your reaction) and 2 guys survived the drop in 2012. Watch (no need to react but you can for sure) "RECARO Presents "Devil's Playground": The Jeremy Foley 2012 Pikes Peak Story" It's a 3:12 minute video.

Loeb, now almost 50 years old, still competes in rally. He races in Dakar (and wins some of the stretches) and he still races in World Rally Competition (WRC) and produces amazing results. He won the Monte Carlo rally 2022. When you meet him in person, he is entirely unpresuming and quiet spoken. Ask him for an autograph or a photo and he willingly complies, even in the middle of a competition. He wasn’t my favourite WRC driver when my wife asked him to pose beside me for a fan photo, but now, years later, I have nothing but admiration for him.

The funniest thing about this car is that it was built from leftover parts. Braking system, suspensions, drivetrain and rear wing are from the 908 Le Mans prototype, the engine is a souped-up Courage C60 engine (Peugeot V6, twin turbo, 650hp when driven at Le Mans, 875hp at Pikes Peak in this 875kg monster). They literally slapped this thing together with parts laying around the Peugeot Sport building. Incredible.

I would say most French cars has what call French charm. Which basically mean that the stuff that breaks is very specific to that brand or even just that model. Citroen are the inventor's of the comfort in France, Renault is more about the engine, Peugeot I feel is a really good family car that also makes fun to drive cars. But again they break, not as badly and expensively as the British cars. They're charming cars with big personalities.

I remember taking the train (or tram) to the top of Pike’s Peak around 1983. The woman on the microphone pointed out this tight turn, that dropped off probably a hundred feet straight down. She said that current Pike’s Peak record holder (at that time), Al Unser Jr. was timed around that corner at 62 miles per hour. The craziest part? The road hadn’t been paved back then, so he made that turn on a dirt road. I’m 54 years old & I head that when I was around 14-15, but it’s always stuck with me.

Loeb has mainly dedicated himself to trying to win the Dakar the last few years. He's finished on the podium a few times--including this year when he finished second at 47 years old. It's arguably the toughest motor race in the world. He is indisputably the greatest rally driver the sport has known. He won the world championship 9 years running. He would have won it 10 years in a row, but in his very first championship he barely lost out to Petter Solberg when he was docked points for an illegal tire change. His streak ended when he retired. Through his active rallying career he had a winning percentage above 50%. This included a 4-years tint in the Citroën C4 during which he was UNDEFEATED on tarmac. Meaning he won every single tarmac rally he drove. That stat alone is insane and it's just one in a considerable list of records on his resumé.

I know I'm late to the party but I'll go over what it is. The Peugeot 208 T16 is a silhouette race car built for the Pikes Peak Unlimited Class (basically you can do whatever you want so long as it passes a safety test). It's a full carbon silhouette body (there's literally nothing from the road 208, which I don't think Americans get, left in it), over a racing chassis with a turbocharged V6 from Peugeot's 908 Le Mans car, tuned to make 875bhp in an 875kg car, so it has a neat 1,000hp/ton. The engine is mated to a 6 speed sequential racing transmission that sends the power through all 4 wheels, which means it can go from standing still to 60 in 1.8 seconds. Top speed is only about 150mph thanks to gearing and the drag from the 908 sourced rear wing but it doesn't need to be any higher on Pikes Peak. As for the driver, Sebastian Loeb is former gymnast turned 9 time world rally champion and he still to this day races part time (I believe he works some sort of engineering job if I remember that interview he did with Guy Martin a while ago)

Some history for Peugeot... in the early 80's one of their sparkling accomplishments was the original 208 GTi. A go-kart sized 2-door, 4 seater car with a 1.8 litre injected engine and a wheel at each corner. The engine was smooth and bullet-proof,... When it raced, it won... I was lucky enough to be given a Peugeot 309GTi as a company car, and the roadholding was awe inspiring... The same day I gave the car back after it was end of life'd, I nearly trashed the brand new Vauxhall rep mobile as I made the mistake of thinking that I didn't have to modify my driving style. That was almost a call for new underwear.

if wanna know who Loeb is these are just a quick summary taken from wiki. 9 times (in a row) world rally Champion. In summary, these are Loeb's records, which make him the strongest driver in rally history , and compared to any category of motorsport, the strongest ever in terms of results, earned him the nicknames of The Cannibal and the Extraterrestrial : with 80 overall world victories he is by far the most victorious driver in history [19] (the second Sébastien Ogier is still at 54 for now). The only rallies he has never won in his career are those disputed in Kenya in 2002 and in Poland in 2009; holds the record for victories in one season (11 in 2008) and the record for consecutive season victories (6 in 2005); with the victory in the Monte Carlo Rally of 2022, at the age of 47 years, 10 months and 28 days, he became the oldest driver to win a world championship race (the previous record belonged to the Swedish Bjorn Waldegaard , who won the Safari Rally 1990 at the age of 46 years and five months). holds the record for the best ratio between total victories and the total number of races scheduled in a single season: he established it again in 2008 by winning 11 races out of a total of 15, equal to 73.33% of the latter; has the record of victories in the same Rally, having won 9 times the Rally of Germany ; he won the Rally of Mexico 6 consecutive times ( 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 ); has the record of victories on asphalt (32) and on dirt (41). Furthermore, on clay he holds the record for rallies won consecutively with 6 consecutive rallies in 2005 , while on asphalt at 100% he holds the record of 18 rallies won consecutively from 2005 to 2010 ; at the 2005 Tour de Corse he managed to win all 12 special stages scheduled [20] ; in 2006 he managed to win the title by running only 12 races out of the 16 scheduled (due to an injury); he was the first non- Scandinavian driver to prevail in the Rally of Sweden , in the Rally of Norway and to have won the Rally of Finland more than once ; he is the only driver in history to have won nine world titles, moreover consecutive ( 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 and 2012 ); with 105 points ahead of Finn Jari-Matti Latvala in the final classification of the 2010 World Rally Championship, he is the driver who won the World Championship with the highest number of points behind the second classified; with 109 points ahead of his compatriot Sébastien Ogier in the final classification of the 2010 World Rally Championship, he also holds the record for the driver who won the World Championship with the most points behind a fellow countryman; holds the record for career podiums (112). Second in this ranking is the Spaniard Carlos Sainz with 97; he also holds the record for consecutive podiums (15) from 2008 to 2009 ; he also has the record of podiums obtained in the same season (13) in the 2005, 2007 and 2008 World Rally Championships; holds the record for the best ratio between total podiums and the total number of races scheduled in a single season: he established it in 2010 by winning 12 podiums out of a total of 13 races equal to 92.31% of the latter; he holds the record for points won in his career (1594), also followed in this ranking by the Spaniard Carlos Sainz with 1242; has the record for consecutive points rallies (28) from the 2009 Rally of Poland to the 2011 Rally of Australia ; he also holds the record for points won in a single season with 276 points won in the 2010 World Rally Championship equal to 84.92% of the total points available; he is the only driver together with the Finnish Mikko Hirvonen to have scored points in all the rallies of the same championship (in 2010 ); he is also first for the number of special stages won (874); held the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb time trial record from 2013 to 2018.
