Just like Johnson, Earnhardt, and Petty, their crew chiefs soured over time. So I disagree with you.

@@erwinpadgett1050 Ray didn't sour, he went on to be a team owner. He moved up. Not only that, was instrumental in bringing Dodge into the sport once again. Ray wanted to be more than a crew chief.

@@erwinpadgett1050 And yet Ray in this interview pretty much states they could get mad at each other but always ended up laughing it off. I disagree as these guys always had a very good relationship where Knaus and Johnson was always strained. It's a testament to Jeffs skills that he won another title and ton more races with other guys, I just don't see the dropoff with Ray but we'll never know.

This proves what I’ve always believed. Johnson benefitted from what Gordon and Evernham built at Hendrick. Then Knaus took their information and gave Jimmie the best car for 15 years. In equal equipment, I would take Gordon any day over Johnson at any type of track.

Not just that but just give him his entire catalog of cars including most of his pit crew which was a championship winning pit crew from the year before and all those cars had alot of wins not saying Jimmy and Chad was not good because they was but they were not as good as people make them out to be just because of the Championships people seem to forget close to the championship team under the chase era I think all but two of those championships he would not have won if it was the old point system

@@sergeantmasson3669 You mean exploiting gray areas that weren’t fully defined for aero advantages, yeah they all did that in one way or another. Just listen to DW on Dale Jr’s podcast talk about using nitro in races, that’s some straight up cheating.

@@lewisgriffin9684 Without “The Playoffs” which is nothing more than artificially “resetting” the points standings 3/4 of the way through a season so people will tune more into the last 1/4 season, Johnson is only a 3-time full season Cup champ. Jeff Gordon is actually Hendrick’s true 7-time Cup champ. Jeff Gordon was the true full season points champ in 2004, 2007 and 2014. Kevin Harvick is actually a 4-time champ: 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2020. Thanks to gimmicky fake playoffs that no other motorsport does, and NASCAR didn’t do before 2004, these records don’t officially count, which is hilarious.

I knew when Harvick paired with Childers they’d be good. As for Johnson, that’s why I refuse to put him ahead of Gordon. And the fact that JG could win on any track. I put all those drivers, including Harvick, on the top level together. Even the King’s wins slowed considerably when the competition got greater. Ray & JG would’ve had so many more wins & titles.

This kind of talk over what is already is is very interesting to me. But what is even more important is the talk of now and the future. nascar has the racing product and cars in a real mess and that is what needs to be talked about and worked on. The racing product has been in a downward spiral for a couple decades. We can't live in the past. We have to start admitting things are all wrong and sideways
