F1: pit crew can barely put a new front wing on. V8 Supercars: pit crew members falling over, a driver having to get his boot changed from heat, a door refusing to stay closed in the pit lane and pit crew members jumping onto the bonnet/hood to get it to close. NASCAR: having the cut the front bumper off with a saw, 6 guys with 7 hammers do some extreme work on the car and putting cute smiles into the face tape.

A car that's wrecked this badly isn't going to be competitive. They're just duct taping them back together to complete as many laps as they can, because they might gain a few finishing positions if someone else drops out. Every position is worth points

Probably only happens in NASCAR and Rally because people in those races are nuts and they have a pretty lax rules regarding the car's aerodynamic. Other races like F1 will simply call it off due to the fat amount of restrictions and rules they have and how competitive the playing field is.
