Throwing it back a little bit since slingshot passes are rare nowadays with the removal of the two car tandem. You could tell how popular the slingshot was in this era based on how the nascar games were at the time. There was a kart racing game (ingeniously called NASCAR Kart Racing, go figure) and one of its main features was having a teammate that you raced with, and if you drove next to them you could gain boost for a "slingshot." Not very accurate, but it sure as hell was fun.

Great video! Have you checked out any slingshot passes from the 80’s? I lump those in the same category as the tandem passes as equally exciting. Maybe even better just because the amount of nuts it took to drive those bricks back then. They didn’t have the stability or the safety advancements that the COT cars have so knowing that they really are putting their life on the line at greater risk makes it more compelling for me to watch. Just my thoughts. Great vid, thanks!

I don’t get it. I don’t really watch this sport much though a racing fan. Why is it called a “slingshot “ pass? I’ve watched this whole compilation it’s just a nicely timed spin of the wheel to dive under or ride outside the leader and make the pass while losing the draft as late as possible cutting the nose of the leader to cross the line first . I don’t get the name🤔

Instead of overtaking normally, in the high speed pursuits, they use the air gap of the car infront to accelerate and pass them in the the turn. Hence "Slingshot." This mostly used when both cars have been pushed to the limits engine wise and the car behind needs the extra aerodynamic edge in speed.
