The cars of the decade were only going tops 120 mph. Daytona and the super-speedway tracks had yet to be built until the very end of the 1950's decade. The 1960's were when the deaths happened due to muscle cars and other faster lighter cars as well as the edition of Daytona in 1957. I know 1969 Taladaga was made but that was only at the very end of the decade. Also did not help with racing dropping the dirt tracks with the soft earth for part of the racer as a safety guard for paved or making the old dirt tracks paved helped cause more deaths as then you are wreaking on a harder surface. Lack of safety equipment during this time including poor helmets even after companies like Bell had started making better helmets then the ones that were basically a hard hat of the 1950's.

That there some tough men. They have rolled cars before few times & ran for the hills you can tell there experience. Get out car stock fuel tank you burn to death. Go back look there safety rules you must have & not have to run, Like unbelievable today standard's. Plus not mistaken all wheel drum brakes! I hate drum brake systems bad fail hot / cold both. Like see today's drivers racing in same equipment. Nope too much wimps. No jets fly them home on. Make them load car back up & drive all way home late into tonight by themselves "crying" like these guys did. Jr. Johnson was wild man back in his young days. Had sense enough got out of it before he got hurt bad. Jack Smith was in huge bunch crashes himself. Pagan just look at that crash painfully hurts.

I was invited to an Old Timers Racing club event at the old Concord Raceway near Charlotte NC several years ago by race driver Johnny Allen. Got to meet him, Ned Jarrett, Francis Flock, Doris Roberts and several others. But one guy in particular. I had this book on the history of Nascar getting folks to autograph it. I showed it to this man, a short slender gray haired guy, and he immediately said, I'm in there. I'm in that book. He took my book and turned right to the section about him. Sure enough. There he was. This man was Russ Truelove. That gentleman made my day. Thanks Russ. Rest in Peace 🏁 Mike Pardue

We met Russ Truelove at the old Concord Raceway Park probably 17 years ago now. I asked him to autograph a book I had and when he saw it he said, I'm in that book. And he was. It showed about 4 photos of this very wreck. And he signed it. To me, Russ was a great guy. He loved to tell stories and I wish I could have heard them all. Johnny Allen, Ned Jarrett, Francis Flock, Doris Roberts were there. Johnny Allen was the guy who invited us to come. It was a Old Timers Racing Club gathering, a two day event. Really really cool. We took my dad too. Had a ball. Miss Flock tried to get us to go home with her. Amazing. Precious Memories. Mike Pardue

The did add seat belts even though most production cars still didn't have them. They learned about seat belts in the 1920's when driver's and mechanics were thrown from open top racecars and many were killed by the car landing on them. They learned from those earlier racers that it is usually better to stay in the car than to be "thrown clear" in a crash.

Art Binkley may have climbed out of that wreck, at 1:12, but sometime after that he was put into a coma. I suppose he must have raced at the Sportsdrome Speedway in Jeffersonville Indiana, Art was from just down the road in New Albany Indiana. Every year they had a benefit race for him, I remembered it as a memorial race. I discovered from talking to Frank Kimmel's dad that Art had been in a coma for a few years, and came back to his senses with some paralysis on one side and went back to work as a welder.

And today, just a bolt on the track calls for 5 lap safety car caution... I only watch "racing" thesedays if I'm up for a nap or sleepy time. But these old clips and the 70's CanAm are the bomb! Real men at play!

I’m actually really surprised that this video didn’t include Paul Newman when he crashed in 1954, considering the fact that his crash caused him to be disqualified for the rest of the season and caused Hudson Hornets to stop being produced for good after having just been created in 1951. But still, interesting video nonetheless. Thanks for the upload.

Um, Paul Newman didn't start Racing until '72. The crash Doc Hudson's was based off of in Cars was Dick Kaufman's fatal 1954 crash where he rolled over repeatedly at Daytona Beach. Hudsons didn't stop production because of a crash, they went bankrupt because their cars were too expensive (and amazing) to manufacture.

It’s crazy how back then the flips were bad and they didn’t even have good safety equipment either but walked away. But nascar is so afraid for a car to go upside down that they reduce the speeds so much. The flips are not bad. It is worse to go head on into the wall than it is to flip. And it’s been proven multiple times. Yes some has died from flips. But most due just from regular hard crashes than anything

For #1 the drivers that didn't wreck the first time round just decide if they couldn't get the job done the first time to come back around for a second attempt.
