Amazing how Cal Wells team plummeted so quickly after this. They were 5th in the points after several good runs. Fell to 27th by season’s end and the team couldn’t even crack the top 30 of points in 2004 before disbanding

It may no longer be the closest finish anymore but it’s still the best finish ever, (that or 1979 Daytona) this is NASCAR at its best, No playoff, no Gimmicks, no stupid rules, no race manipulation, no dumping a guy, Just Hard Fought, Aggressive but good racing, that’s NASCAR.

I know I'm quoting S1apsh0es here, but could you imagine what nascar would look like today had this finish not happened? Darlington could easily be taken off the schedule if thus finish didn't happen, but now the Southern 500 is a crown jewel event just like its supposed to be.

Definitely the greatest race from start to finish, Nascar should study this race and apply it today... tire wear, +time urgency (rain looming) so maybe shorter races, and drivers that could actually drive a wild race car without wrecking each other... also, the camera angle of the cars coming out of turn 2 was unbelievable.
