ARM for smaller smb and home makes sense. Not sure if this model makes sense to me, I guess you have to hedge your bets with arm, Intel, amd, and others to see where everything ends up. Great review apu...

The Nvme performance is bottlenecked by the pcie card. This cards in particular dropps the connection to the ssd from pciex4 gen4 to pciex2 gen3 which causes the massive slowdown. It’s a limitation of the plx chip used for this card.

I have a question and I believe you are the only one who can help😢 I am buying a 6 bay nas from terramater with their suggested WD PRO HD, which raid configuration is the ultimate for streaming Plex and media ? As mainly this is for remote access of movies only

I’m looking at either buying a NAS or building one. Which do you think would be the better option in the long run? The efficiency of an ARM processor or the better specification that you can get with building your own?
@Uberragen21
@Uberragen21 3 ай бұрын
There are many factors to consider. The biggest factor is likely; is electricity cost & consumption a big issue for you? If Yes, then buy an ARM NAS. If No, then do you need or want to use the NAS for more than simply file storage? If Yes, then consider a more powerful x86 CPU. Do you want to use the NAS for server type functions? Running VMs, containers, etc, you may want to build or buy a more powerful mid-level NAS. You can do a LOT with modern x86 CPUs with 6-16 cores when it comes to VMs and such. Can the pre-built NAS offer upgradable memory and PCIe expansion? A custom built NAS/server that you built definitely can. Do you have the time to invest into learning something new like Proxmox or TrueNAS? Those can be great educational things to learn, but what happens down the road when you haven't touched the NAS for years? You may have to rebuild the NAS OS because of a hardware failure and you haven't touched the NAS configuration in years. Now one wrong move and your mission critical data might be lost forever. ...and you don't have a NAS manufacturer to call for technical support. You have to figure it out all on your own. Some people relish in the challenge. Most don't however.

I'm trying to future proof for another 5 to 8 years. which would you think it would be best? thank you mate.

Anything with an usb4 org TB 3/4 ports can be upgraded to 10gb lan. That is what I am looking for for future purchases in Nas/mini pc. Heck might buy a mini pc, add a USB harddisk tower and a USB 4 to 10gb ethernet, put unRAID or truenas on it and see how that holds up. Would be cheaper than this device

30 watts with drives in idle? That is just too much energy. That is around 273 kWh yearly, and fire me, that would be around 100 USD yearly. A laptop uses like 2 watts, with one NVME and 1gbe card. I don't see why this thing should use 28 watts more. A harddisk uses maybe 2 watts in idle, so that is 8 watts for 4 drives. What is using the remaining 20 watts?
@laserbait
@laserbait 4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what laptop uses 2 Watts, but it probably sucks to use. I'm not sure where you got any of those power figures from. A typical 8TB HDD uses about 7W at idle. A Raspberry Pi 4 uses about 4 watts at idle, and this NAS is more powerful than a Pi 4, and a lot more connectivity.
@Galmok18
@Galmok18 4 ай бұрын
@@laserbait A Lenovo T490 with i5-8365 CPU and 2x8GB memory and sn-850x 2TB NVME, with the screen off and running Linux. 3 watts if supplied with 2.5 gbe USB Ethernet adapter (built-in is only 1 gbe). Measured at the wall. In idle of course, which is the typical situation for a home NAS. And a HDD uses around 4 watts in idle.

with a battery plugged in? Could be it's feeding from the battery too.
@Galmok18
@Galmok18 4 ай бұрын
@@MirabisEU of course with the battery active. The measurement is not a moment in time, but over a duration, in order to rule out the battery influence. And if a laptop can use that little, why shouldn't a NAS be able to. Sure, HDDs use a bit, but not when spun down.

Soo just another "middle of the road" nas device with a stupidly high price point. The only take away from this is "its alright", i would be boored to tears reviewing units like this. Paying 700 quids in 2024 for a qnap/Synology with crappy performance just feels like buying the old ARM based Netgear duo all over again.

@LouisGiliberto

Many have PCIe slots and you can add whatever card you want. Though often used for media, these are storage devices and a lot of people don't need to pay extra for a GPU.

Huh? Almost all of our SMB desktop/rack NAS come with an Intel GPU. TS-x64u Series, if you need to look at a rack solution, this is perfect for a Plex/Media server, also comes with HDMI for the apps on the NAS that support it.
