It would be nice if you did a specific video on vm's. Things like specific models, memory and proc. I have 2 qnaps and neither run virtual machines well at all if qsync and backups are running. They seem WAY underpowered.

I have an older/simpler NAS that is just used for off-device storage and backup. You keep mentioning “licenses” for surveillance cameras. Why are these licenses needed? And where do you get additional licenses if you need more than three (3) cameras? Thanks.

Excellent video, as always. Thanks to you I think I’m just about ready to go ahead and order my Synology NAS, but I was wondering about the BOINC and Folding@Home stuff. I saw someone ask about it elsewhere when I first started looking, and it was mentioned that it probably wasn’t a wise idea given the thermal constraints. Any thoughts?

Hi! I just purchased a NAS, got it a day ago. As a newb, I’m starting small to give the tech a go. But I realised I need some kind of dock to link the Box to my laptop. Do you have a suggestion that is cheap to be a dock and link, perhaps with multiple socket options?? Thanks.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 3 жыл бұрын
That would depend on your laptop? If it’s a desktop you’d normally connect to your NAS via the network socket sometimes through a router. And to do that from a laptop you don’t need a dock - you can get away with a USB3 or 3.1 to gigabit ethernet adapter. USB docks are pretty cheap, thunderbolt docks (for laptops or Macs equipped woth Thunderbolt) are more expensive.
@stevegeorge7773

@@mondotv4216 yea it’s USB 3. But I also want to connect a digital illustrations tabletop to the NAS as well as a camera, Fuji, when downloading video and photos. So it’s three devices and I would like to avoid unplugging then replugging all the assets to the NAS. Is there devises that allow that, as a newb?

Thanks for the video. I am buying the ds220+ (I know 2 bay, you are warning me against) I have been using multiple USB drives for years and am tired of multiple disks. Anyway, getting two 18tb exos drives (Seagate Exos X18 18TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 3.5-Inch Enterprise Hard Drive 2-Pack - ST18000NM000J (Renewed)) to run a raid system. I don't know anything about RAID (please help) Going for the 8gb ram (ADATA Premier 8GB Single DDR4 2666Mhz CL19 PC4-21000 260-Pin SODIMM Memory RAM Single (AD4S26668G19-SGN)) add on. I thought I saw somewhere I could also add a PCIe SSD to the board. Can I? I am planning on moving my Plex server (w/lifetime membership) to this NAS. I also am planning on using it for windows backup, a cloud storage, and other things after watching this video. Where am I going wrong or should be doing?

@@jakew3 Yes, i'm aware of that advantage regarding the camera licenses with a QNAP. It's one more reason for not understanding this decision from Synology. Well, in fact i understand: it's a way for them to make more money... Regarding switching from Synology to QNAP, is something that i don't consider. Is not that i think QNAP isn't worth, i can't tell that because i never tried, and each brand has its advantages and disadvantages, but i'm too used with Synology and i like DSM. Anyway, thanks for your opinion. 😉 Cheers

This guy is advising people to "rip audio from cds and put them on a NAS" ? That's illegal. This is why I gave up on music. People just ripping your music and not thinking that the time spent to create the song should be rewarded.

@@nascompares It’s such a grey area that no court would even attempt to prosecute. As long as you own the media you can legally do what you like as long as it doesn’t involve distributing in any shape or form. Use it for your own personal use and it’s fine
@Rickles
@Rickles 3 жыл бұрын
That not illegal in America.... The supreme court ruled that it's legal to make back up copies of your media and why wouldn't they? It's already paid for. We might actually enjoy it more if we don't have to go find the plastic frisbee that it came burnt onto and a piece of hardware that can play it, both of which will end up in a landfill. We want to pay for access to the media not the medium itself but streaming conglomerates are trying to take that away because they can keep charging you each month even if you aren't consuming any new music. Don't play the persecuted artist just because nobody wanted to pay you.
