Look on the bright side, you are not putting in a turbo into a TDI wagon. Good Luck and keep us posted. We are rooting for you.

Some thoughts that come to mind (not necessarily in this order). Step 1. Add oil to cly. #6- repeat compression test. If higher reading consider adding ATF or carbon solvent and soak to release stuck rings? Step 2. Borescope inspection of all cylinders for damage starting with #6. Step 3. Oil & filter change and analysis for debris from piston or ring damage Step 4. Pull head for closer inspection of valves and cylinders. Step 5. Pull oil pan (if possible) or remove engine. Hope it's an easy fix, Mark, we're here for you tube therapy support.

If he rebuilds just the head and not the short block all the rings will blow. Ask my dad

Wow, I hope it takes a minimal amount of time & money to resolve. After winter comes spring, when this little car should be cruising over the I-5 bridge to attend some of those cars & coffee events in WA.

Damn, I hope it's just a valve and that the cilinder wall didn't suffer any damage because of a broken piston ring.

That's a shame, good luck with the repair. Beautiful car.

Well mark can smile knowing the homless home owner lost the driveline between differentials 300 ft behind the truck on the ground ,,, had to order a 3rd member for 1600$$ / has to layover in brownsville oregon till mon or tue, there is a porta potty in front of the truck. Hee hee jeremy broke down....

Mark, what would a simple valve job cost? It can't be that dear...or can it?
@kentesdall30818 күн бұрын
My aunt and uncle had one of those. The Nash Rambler, which this is, was a cheap car. They were very basic. Theirs didn't have a radio, but it had dummy dials and knobs on the dash so it looked like a radio was installed.
@2stroketurbo18 күн бұрын
Yup. Thats what this Nash has. Dummy Dials ! 😄

They also had very fancy hard top and convertible models we have both.

I'm going with broken piston and/or rings. A busted valve surely would give zero compression.. I'm sure as an experienced mechanic you would have a fair idea already based on the noise you heard... we will all have to wait and see.. On a separate note, your DKW affliction had me very tempted to save a 3-6 station wagon i saw for sale recently but it had a lot of rust in the roof in one corner and I suspect getting spares would be almost impossible in general AND they are basically a non existent car here....

Can you put new rings and bearings in it without removing the engine from the vehicle?
@crosslink149318 күн бұрын
That's the rearmost cylinder so I suspect he'll have to pull the engine out. With that simple of an engine I'd probably pull it out and look at everything before throwing too much $$$ at it. If all looked good then just fix the single cylinder, maybe replace anything else that's questionable (new rings all-around as those spark plugs look mighty black to me?), and it should be 'solid' for quite some time. Anyone know if those are two or three ring pistons in it?
@torchris118 күн бұрын
Should at least be easier to disassemble than that VW TDI! Good luck!
@COIcultist18 күн бұрын
Those sparkplugs are fine? They look on the screen like the engine has been running fantastically rich or there is oil fowling, I've had sparkplugs out of two strokes that look better than they do.

So Mark ..what do you think? Rings? Seals? Head gasket? Pistons? Warped head? Warped block ? Cracked Heads/block? What's causing this mayhem?
@JoeTaylor-p4o15 күн бұрын
Almost all of the above. It didn’t overheat so I think it’s time for a long block rebuild, in my experience. Do it once and do it right
@2stroketurbo14 күн бұрын
I think the number 6 piston cracked And broke. I think a piston crown broke off and was causing the rattling noise that has now gone away, And... it needs new rings.
@briankeenan490114 күн бұрын
@@2stroketurbo Lotsa work on that flathead 6. But you'll get around to it. You know we all love that car.

Pull it and rebuild it. Better to square away the entire assembly instead of chasing your tail with this and that which will jump scare you on a 71 year old engine. From brand new they needed an overhaul after 60K miles anyway

Drop an LS in it and stir the pot up a bit. Prolly find an engine from a ‘05-‘07 GTO close by.
