My parents worked in separate shoe factories in Columbus Ohio. I eventually worked at both of them. 1969. I loved the smell of leather and the chatter of the toe stitcher. Dad glued the crepe soles and I removed the tack after the last was pulled out. At one time, there were 9 shoe factories in Columbus. They were all gone by the time I returned from the service. 1974. Thank you for bringing part of it back.

After watching you fix your old pair of cowboy boots I wish I could afford to have you fix my daddy’s boots. He was in WWII in the Navy and then a policeman for years. He always wore cowboy boots while he was a policeman.

I don't how I ended up here because I watch heavy metal videos, video game stuff, animals, concerts and crazy stuff but I'm glad I came here because now it's amazing watching the good honest hard work of putting boots together and repairing them etc. I always wondered why my Pop LOVED his boots and kept repairing them instead of just buying new boots but he always said he LOVED his boots and now I get it. Great Video channel guys! Found it by accident too! I was in the Quality Shoe retail business for 47 years and LOVED to watch you "WORK" on those boots. The repair shop that serviced our store was from an Italian guy that could also MAKE SHOES and I LOVED to watch him. Glad to see the Vibram Soles and heels for better wear on the boots you rebuilt too. He should also use Neatsfoot oil on his boots to keep the leather "Alive" as they, the upper, will last longer by doing this at least 2-3 times a year. At least I found out this really helps the quality leather uppers of my shoes over the years. Retired now in Florida, for 11 years, but MISS the retail business so-so much!.

This takes me Back Some 56 years to when I was 14 years Old. @ 9:30 You're using a leather Sole Cutting machine, I was one Saturday morning Marking out & Cutting Leather Soles for use further on in the week by the Cobbler. I was so engrossed with watching what and where I was Cutting in relation to the marked line that, I didn't realise until I started screaming that I'd fed my left thumb onto the Cutting blade. Nearly took the whole of my thumb off, but fortunately it was good after it all healed. I'm 70 years Old now & still remember that for working Saturday and 2 Evenings after School I used to get 10 Shillings a week ( that equates to 50p or around 25Cents. ) I used to love the job n I bought my first Fishing Rod with my 1st weeks Wages, I WAS OVER THE MOON

There’s something very satisfying about watching these videos. I’ve seen quite a few shoe/boot restoration videos by various craftsman and it’s a skilled art form that is being lost. Years ago there used to be quite a few shops that repaired shoes, boots, purses, belts and other leather goods. Not any more… Nobody repairs anything anymore, they just buy a new one.

@@TrentonHeath I was going through perhaps one of the lowest points in my life just some decent attire would help a lot. I was given a pair of comfortable never used Redwing western style cowboy boots that didn't last sixty days. Next I was given a pair of comfortable never used Georgia western style cowboy boots, that was five years ago. I have put hundreds of miles on them, literally, I oiled them with boot oil religiously. I have been on hard times again an have not been able to oil them so they are getting rough. I was of buying new but I can't afford boot oil let alone new boots. Are you going to stick a sole protector on top of that? You mentioned wearing through the old stitches then used stitches on the new sole.
@TrentonHeath Жыл бұрын
I think you missed the point. You can’t trench into a sole protector (it’s too thin), so the stitches literally sit right on top. A leather sole wears down much quicker than rubber soles, which is why a sole protector can come in handy. If you use one, we recommend not stitching on top of them. I chose to use a rubber sole AND I trenched it, which means it’ll last a long time, and it’ll take forever before I wear down to the stitches.

In French we have a saying "Cordonnier mal chaussé" It translates to "Badly shod cobbler" and is about the the equivalent of the English version "The cobbler's children are the worst shod." If in at least 2 languages cobblers are used for 2 saying with the same meaning, it must have been common knowledge when cobblers were almost on every street corner that they neglect their own shoes.
