I grew up wearing leather upper and leather soled shoes as did all my brothers and sister. When I started buying my own shoes, the shoe repairman in my small hometown told me when they started making faux stacked heels, they would cut corners everywhere else. He said the hard plastic core of a heel was ultra fatiguing to walk and stand on. Boy! Was he ever right! A real leather stacked heel has bounce and cushion and ‘give’ to it. You can wear them all day in comfort. Sad to see even formerly great brands are just krapoola. Great video and so interesting to learn!

They look great now. I know next to nothing about shoes. Yet, if I am at a thrift and I see rubber soles, I put them back. Several years back, I found a pair of rather old Florsheim wing tips and sold them online. Other than that, I bought newer pairs of Florsheim and Johnston Murphy that were both made in Spain for $5.00 each. They cleaned up and look nice. From personal experience, I'm not complaining about Cole Haan loafers I owned. They were stylish, good looking, lightweight, pleasant to wear. They were non-repairable - but they were cheap. They don't last for a century - nor do I. It was good trade-off. My only regret is I wasn't able to find the same model after two years, I wish I bought extra pair.

Although I have limited need for nice shoes, what I find engaging and noteworthy is the quality and value you bring to the table. As a society were are driven by price or perceived quality and think when we spend more we always get more. You prove beyond doubt that it isn't always true. I know the next time I need to buy shoes, I will have some really good information to draw on so that I don't needlessly spend more than I need to and what true quality looks like.

I stumbled across a channel on TikTok where they break down leather goods, tell you how much leather is in it, what kind it is, how much it would cost to buy the materials, how much to make, and then basically a "is it worth it" type question. So when I started watching this, I was like GEE, I WONDER IF THESE DUDES LOOK AT CERTAIN SHOES AND GO 'NAH, WOULDN'T BUY THOSE' and then you answered that in the first minute. And I think that one of the things that I had seen that channel break down was Cole Haans.

These “what if” videos are fun, I appreciate your effort. I see these and others (Stacy Adams) often at Goodwill; many of them look good but you can tell their construction is like the one you tore apart so I pass. That said, I often see vintage Florsheim, Allen Edmonds, J & M, Aldens and Edward Greens at the two Goodwills near me. Almost all need a little reconditioning and new soles and they’re back in the game. Sadly, with the exception of two AE’s none were my size. None of these pairs of shoes were more that $19 ea. Have seen more awkward egg-heads so you’re good man!

"It's hair. It'll grow back." *me:* frowns in bald. Seriously, though: Apart from the lackluster construction, these are not even "good looking" shoes to begin with , just like most Cole Haans, actually. It boggles the mind they seem to have such a customer base to be that widespread. You certainly made the most out of them and gave them a severe upgrade. Always a pleasure seeing you guys and your craftsmanship in action.

The guys who have a good head and scalp for the bald look can rock it really well. OTOH, there's always minoxidile and transplants. 🤷🏻♂️ Just don't do the former if you have cats. It's super toxic for them. :( Transplants are the gold standard if you have some follicles that are viable. But...embrace the bald look with a stylish beard that complements the way your face is shaped. :)

You should do a “Vinted” or “DePop” series where you set a $10 budget for a pair of shoes to upgrade. I got a decent pair of dress shoes for £8 (almost new), obviously not fantastic build quality but I’d rather pay £8 than £85 (RRP) for pair of shoes that I’m not going to get years of wearing out of them. Hi Trent. Awesome job on the Cole Haans. Like the navy blue soles. The only shoes I have by Cole Haan are some driving loafers and they've held up fairly well over time. I do have one question though. I am getting some of the Tobacco flip flops (can't wait ) and I was wondering if conditioning them before wearing them and on a regular basis after will help prevent my feet from staining the leather darker or is that just going to happen anyway regardless? It was never an issue with my dark brown ones. BTW imo the new haircut's lookin' good .👍👍
