So “affordable” doesn’t actually mean affordable….just like always. $1400 a month isn’t affordable. $300, $400, $500 a month is affordable. I’m sick of all of these housing things claiming they are affordable when they actually aren’t affordable. My mortgage on my 3 bedroom house on a half acre lot is just under $600 a month and that includes money that goes to pay property taxes and insurance. $600 a month is affordable housing. The house was built in 1992…so it’s not that old and it’s in great condition…and I bought it in 2006. That is what “affordable” is….not rent for $1400 a month. “Affordable” is now a bad word and a lie…because every time you hear “affordable housing” on a news report or from a project like this…it’s never actually affordable.

@@sdlock83 Yes, I know. The pods I was referring to are little more than tents. Tiny houses are better. Better still might be to repurpose abandoned roadside motels into living units for the homeless.
@sdlock83Ай бұрын
@@DavidLS1 Even the pods are better than this. Remember these kinds of housing provides shelter and privacy, but are not meant to me permanent. The worst thing one can do is to make them DEPENDENT on welfare for the rest of their lives. There should be a DESIRE for them to work their way OUT.
@DavidLS1Ай бұрын
@@sdlock83 Not everyone can work themselves out of poverty. Refurbished motels would be ideal for the homeless elderly. At least we agree that all of these approaches are better than tents and cardboard boxes. A number of countries have almost no homeless people. Denmark, Ireland. Finland. Japan and Norway just to name a few. Perhaps we should try to copy what they're doing.

I pray more people do this across the US. There should be absolutely no reason for this much homelessness... if I had the means, I would do this. Thank you for your help and support for people in your city!

This is not affordable housing for many. Are you kidding me? You're saying $1,400 per month like that's a good thing? Most low income families or homeless people would not be able to afford that living on nothing but their Social Security. My friend's mother pays no more than $600 a month for her one bedroom totally renovated apartment with water and garbage included although she does pay her own electric and gas bill and this is in Illinois and they have HUD there as well. I don't know maybe things are different in Tennessee.

This definitely helps with the housing crisis for unhoused populations. The fact that people can have all amenities, a safe and secure home that is furnished, and only pay 30% of income is amazing! More large cities need to try this model so there are displaced families who are housed. Hopefully there is a social worker on site for case management and job resources. It’s a win-win! HUD funding is being put to good use to help Americans and it’s a solution to part of the housing and homelessness crisis.

@petegallows5494Ай бұрын
Good for the former homeless, but at that cost, it's hardly a "good deed". Even subsidised, well, somebody is dishing out the rest of the rent money and that somebody is the taxpayer - asking $1400 a month for a renovated motel room is disgustingly greedy. What can you expect from a developer. If the city/government bought this old motel themselves, there would be no need to pay tens - maybe even hundreds of thousands worth of subsidised rent (130 people - is that 130 units, or do at least some people share the motel room?), every single month for decades. Doing it this way is a waste of money and the greedy developer is smiling ear to ear.

Wow! Can they afford $1400/month? A young man I know personally aged out of the foster care system. He slept on the train that runs in and out of of the San Jose area. His biological parents and family were druggies/criminals. He wanted to avoid being involved with them. However, I don’t know that he could afford $1400.

$1400?!!! That’s crazy high for a studio apt that’s supposedly affordable housing. Those units should be no more than $550-$600 maybe $700 with all utilities included. Are they taking section 8 housing? That could explain the jacked up rent.
