My husband & I used to be homeless for years. Having these would have saved our lives of so much grief. Having to uproot “this minute”, having our stuff stolen, having a place to put our stuff, and so much more. In one of these my husband would have been able to actually sleep. He tried everything to protect me & make me feel protected. These things would make a Huge difference in the life of any homeless person who is able to get one of these. These should be advertised and brought to the government, everyone and anyone who can and would make a difference❤ Good for You! This is brilliant!

You do realize these are not exactly cheap to build? Solar panels on top are not cheap. How could you possibly secure this anywhere? A cordless angle grinder can cut through any metal pretty much. All bike locks are like butter against an angle grinder. If they can secure it it would be much more practical. Clearly this guy doesn't ride bikes I guess. Plus when you're homeless you're often around other homeless and most are drug addicts/thieves so now you are a prime target that you weren't in your old tent. Because everyone has an old tent or tarp so they don't want yours. But this really gets back to the cause of this mess: Opiate addiction to drugs way more powerful than they ever used to and the stupidity of people still buying street drugs that could be laced with Fentanyl. We've been reading about the risks for years yet they still do it. You just can't fix stupid.

No one should be displaced especially those that work and need to park their own car in their neighborhood. I don't have all the answers, but taking up parking spaces for homeless people is not the solution, living on the streets is not the solution either, letting everyone into this country is also not the solution!

It's a lot easier housing people in sleeping pods like they do in Japan. It's very space efficient. The pod could even be locked up when they are out keeping their valuables safe. A pod would be high enough one could sit up in so easily 2 stacked in an 8' ceiling room or 3 if you really push it with a thin mattress. They could be ventilated, soundproof and light proof so people would sleep very well, unlike in homeless dormitory type shelters where they wake up exhausted in the morning because of the noise all night from addicts Jonesing for their fix. The pod could be about 7' long with shelves on each side for belongings. 7' x say 4' x 4' = 112 cubit feet. Now take a room with an 8' ceiling like most are. Make it about 17' wide to allow for a 3' hallway for easy access. Think of how many you could get into just 1000 sq ft. In a large warehouse you could house literally thousands. But how do you get addicts into treatment if they don't feel like it? You make possession illegal. But they don't get a record, they are just segregated. Oh....possession would entail testing positive for illegal drugs. And police would have the power to test people on the street if they suspected. Most are very easy to spot. In a few days entire downtowns could be swept clean of addicts and they would all be drying out in a place where there is no chance of drugs entering because everyone is searched coming and going and they aren't going anywhere for weeks. And they are kept busy with work programs while there so they can learn new skills. And they maintain their own facilities. Indoor growing could feed much of their dietary needs. Because without treatment MOST WILL DIE of their addiction. Or get imprisoned for years at great cost to the taxpayer.

The city needs to provide spaces with portable toilets where people could park these overnight without getting into trouble. This guy is awesome and definitely needs to be sponsored and supported. Homeless people need help to get into some sort of shelter especially in the winter and this is a great intermediate solution.

Yes. Any of the carparks at shopping centers could, for a small fee, allow access to their toilets etc. A certain part of the carpark could be set aside for that; there however should be a time people have to leave their rented space of a morning.

A suggestion for your next model: Put in a Rice Cooker with a steaming basket instead of a butane element. A rice cooker with steaming basket can cook an entire meal, (rice/bulghur wheat/couscous + steam vegetables + steam meat or hard boil eggs) AND it turns itself off when it's finished cooking. Much better for health, safety and likely less challenge for your power systems. A small crock pot would be good too...again it turns itself off.

Very well executed.. the occupant will have to be organized which discounts the majority of homeless with drug/mental issues. As to materials used, don't kid yourself, it's not green for a variety of reasons. This is an e-powered travel trailer. It would need lots of insulation to be remotely efficient, where to drain the grey water, the weight of water and diesel. We wouldn't have the homeless problem in the first place if intetest rates weren't kept at rock bottom for 20+ years. I like his ideas but when reality comes knocking, we'll see.

It’s a nice design, but there are MANY of these “mobile or stationary boxes” for the homeless, and people making them. The hard part is always the land underneath…where can people leave them and live/sleep in them? Do they just use the bathroom “elsewhere?” How long can they stay in one spot, how many in one area? Those are the points where it starts to get hard and solutions are really tricky.

Most people will feel bad for the homeless population, say "it's not fair" and "someone should do something", then they move on with their lives and don't do anything about it. Ryan clearly cares about people and he acts accordingly. The homeless crisis is huge in every city, Halifax has 11 tent cities. It used to be that homeless people were on drugs, but now they seem to be working full time and can't afford to live or even find a place. This is a great idea. Nice word, Ryan.

A lot of homeless people end up homeless again because they waste their money on drugs, and alcohol. You'd be surprised how many people actually enjoy living in misery and filth. I currently live in subsidized housing and hate living here due to so many neighbors and their FILTH! They get a home that's almost free to rent and instead of appreciating it, what do they do? They turn it into Trash! When I wasn't poor, I used to feel sorry for the poor in Canada, after becoming a single mother and becoming poor and living in poor neighborhoods, I stopped feeling sorry for most poor people in Canada(especially singles without children) cause many of them are thieves, users, filthy, selfish people that don't appreciate the help they get a lot of the times and turn everything into trash.

I’m a 69 yo solo on the other side of the pond, in my own home. Lucky. But lady you have a story to tell, now tell it. I’ve had some good luck and some bad but I’ve alway manage to hold on to my home that I bought in 1977 My kids (3) were born here and I’m not leaving until I’m in my box (preferably a woven willow withies one, as my family are a long line of basket makers), it’s my home, I love it. This was heartfelt. All peoples deserve to be housed. Governments have lots of money for useless wars, and help for other countries in need. How come they "never have the funds" to take care of their own citizens? I hope one day, I never have to see anyone sleeping in the streets on cardboards, tents, undergrounds, benches, and many dangerous places. This goes for homeless animals like: dogs, and cats. 😪😢

Yes, they benefit the billionaires, (military industrial complex) and the governments that order those wars. Does it benefit the regular soldier that fights those wars? NO! The soldier that survives, gets a Medal. The one that dies, comes home in a box (whole or in pieces). The family gets a Flag, and a Medal as a "Thank you for your Service"... The root of the problem starts with Our Governments, that gives our tax money to billionaires to 'play' with... Capitalism is the name of the game, masking as: "They're fighting for our freedoms".

This is a really cool idea and definitely better than living in a tent. One thing that worries me is that these tiny homes might be targeted by people who find it funny to tip them over and trap the person inside. I think it's essential to have more than one exit point. Even if the window were removable, it's not big enough for an average adult to crawl through. I hope a future build version will address that point.

What a great idea! I work in DT Toronto and am troubled by seeing people sleeping in the streets. This is a great alternative to tents and sleeping on the sidewalk. Hopefully the city of Toronto or other communities will enter into a partnership with this guy.

Years ago homeless who had medical issues were put in hospital type settings where nurses took care of them. But since Bob Rae said they have rights.... those homeless with medical issues are now free to check themselves out of care or decide themselves if they won't take their medication. Some then become violent and lose all sense of hygiene. I'm not sure a tiny house would help them or they would even use it. The tiny house would certainly work for those who regard this as a solution to emergency housing for one or two people and a temporary step until they gain their independence/job again.

Thank you JS. I actually checked into the tiny home after I saw it on your George Street video. My friend is homeless and I am willing to fund one for her but she is paranoid and would likely not use it. I wasted $200 on a cellphone so she could be contacted for housing which she threw away. The wait time for rent-geared-to income housing is 16 years. Maybe the streets-to-homes program is 18 months but like you said, if there is no way to contact them, they will fall off the list. Based on Olivia Chow's current rate of building affordable housing, it will take 150 years to house the 24,000 people on the list. My friend is so far gone, she is not applying for any assistance. I got a form 2 and the cops dragged her to the hospital but the doctor let her go because she insisted she was OK. Unfortunately the mentally ill have rights and my hands are tied. I have some ideas for the home design but I will contact Ryan directly.

It takes a lot to manage day-to-day living, a rooming house where meals are prepared, laundry is done and the residents have just a room to manage might be more accessible. Of course they still have to get along with others, pay rent, manage their own health care, that's the hard part. No easy answers.

@@lemondropkid6175 Yes, my friend's sister is also mentally ill but she has been seeing a psychiatrist for over 20 years and he was able to get her into a group home, St. Jude's. That took 5 years and the sister cooperated. My friend won't admit she is mentally ill.

I pray with all my HEART and soul that's something is done where these can be used. I help the homeless off and on through the '90s and 2019 everything was taken and I ended up on hard times myself. However I'm grateful for what I have and my small social security check. I can't imagine being on the streets with eczema along with other health issues so I pray someone pays attention to this. Thank you for having the heart to do this.

We need this in San Francisco. We enjoy much more mild year round climate, so heat isn’t a necessity. It’s one of the reasons our city has become a magnet for homeless from other areas. They flock here due to the climate. This guy has his heart in the right place, and I hope this becomes a very successful venture. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

@@carolhutchinson7763 Sonoma is actually a completely different climate. Even Oakland and Marin County are microclimates. I’m comparing SF to Toronto. One of the worst snow storms I’ve ever driven in was on New Year’s in Toronto. I honestly thought I was going to die! Worse than Ohio, where I grew up. I don’t think anyone would ever freeze to death on the streets of SF.
