Gwen Wells's portrayal of Sueleen's confusion and then distraught and numbed humiliation at the end of the scene is a stunning piece of acting.

Sueleen Gay is my favorite character in Nashville, even her appearances were short - I appreciated her first song" Let me be the one" more as it always cracks me up. XD

Ten months later and I'm still the only one who's coming to watch this hilarious scene. Let me tell you as a musician that it is VERY difficult, unless you're tone deaf, to sing this out of tune. Band plays in F and she's singing in C. Gwen's ear would naturally want to gravitate to F with the band but she has to consciously force herself to stay in C. Hell of an acting job. Gwen Wells was a natural. R.I.P.

+J Joe Townley she was fantastic. This scene reminds me a lot of the one in Fame. Looks like back then movies were made to warn young ladies to not approach the world of musicianship because they would be abused by men.

+Carlos Jurschik Yep, and Suleen sure was abused later, although that clip has been removed by KZbin where she has to strip down for the men against her will on the promise of a better job offer from Ned Beatty later. I recall walking out of the theater and saying, I've just watched a masterpiece.

I never thought of that !. The rest of the scene is very difficult to watch.

Had no idea until seeing Nashville that Barbara Harris, Christina Raines and Karen Black could sing as well as they did. This scene with Gwen Wells is one of the funniest in the 3-hour film. "She's the worst singer I ever heard!" "She cannot sing a lick, can she!" This clip was uploaded four years ago and mine is the first comment. A dubious honor of some sort, I guess.

I decided to help ol' Suleen Gay out and pitch correct her voice...as someone else pointed out, it was just that the band was pitched a step down from her singing--while she never probably would have been a great singer she wasn't all that bad after all... 😅😇kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXK8lqhpe62MZ68si=oPb1D_BVV5vfYRjR

Either Gwen Welles truly could not sing or this the best job of bad singing I've ever witnessed.

Actually Gwen Welles could not sing and in fact, she wasn't supposed to be that bad, just mediocre... but this was after weeks of coaching by Ronnee Blakley and Richard Baskin. Of those who played stars in the film only Blakley and Keith Carradine were professional singers. Tina Raines was heavily coached by Carradine, and they were all put together by Baskin. The fact that Altman made actors perform as singers gave the film a human quality that is unparalleld. Blakley gives a career performance. Lily Tomlin actually can't sing - anybody ever see her do "Antler Dance" on SNL? She was so bad that Paul Schaffer bailed her out on the second verse. But it's better than the gospel screeching she does in Nashville. Placing these actors / amateur singers in front of journeyman pro musicians made all the difference - like when Connie White/Karen Black wisely defers to Vassar Clements in the King of the Road scene.
