Sounds like the VVC system, when it cam lobe switch would occur, if it's faulty, the ECU would cut beforehand

This totally could be it. But I've always referred to that system as VVL (variable valve lift) or DVVL. Like a civic type R with faulty vtec would cut out when the vtec is supposed to engage
