Nasopharyngeal Suctioning

Nasopharyngeal Suctioning is an 8-minute station but subject to review. It is a non-touch technique procedure.
Set suction to 10-20kPa/100-150 mmHg for Adults. Monitor patient’s condition throughout the intervention. Ensure patients face is clean, they are safe,and comfortable post procedure.

Hi all, Please kindly note that a recent update does not recommend the ROTATION OF THE Catheter, but other steps are still in line with the marking criteria . Expected to Lubricate the tip of the catheter inserts gently in to the nostril until the patient coughs or resistance is felt.

Hi I just got the marking creteria given by my testing centre and it stated there to rotate the catheter while withdrawing

Do we need to ask the patient to sniff to check which nostril is blocked prior to suction??

Yes please, it is required to check that the nostrils are patent.

What's the need to take both size 10 and 12 suction catherter. Why not specify it as size 10 or 12 which entails you either use any?

Both sizes are mentioned for learning purpose. The size you'll use will depend on your patient assessment . Thanks

Hi Maryam, each session of suctioning should not last more than 10 seconds to reduce risk of Hypoxia. The timing of subsequent repeat is dictated by patients condition and consent to be ready for the repeat (2 or 3)
