This flower is a must have in your garden because it is a trap crop, is beautiful, and is fully edible. Impress your friends and include a nasturtium flower in the next party meal you host.

Hi! I’m Bri from Urban Gardening Canada. I teach gardening information to all levels of gardeners who grow in colder climates, that have to contend with frost, snow, cold nights and short growing seasons. I love to grow vegetables, flowers and fruit and want to teach you how you can grow your own food too. You may see some insects on this channel, because I love bugs and they are an important part of the gardening experience. Gardening is an amazing hobby that can teach you about nature, biodiversity, caring for the planet, and growing your own healthy, organic food.

Nasturtiums are so versatile, I love them. Growing up we never planted them to eat, they were interplanted with the squash as they seemed to repel cucumber beetles (and they added a touch of color). The downside was there was always so much yellow squash and zucchini, we couldn't give away all the excess.

i grow them for all the reasons you mention. i also love it that they repel Squash bugs, cucumber beetles, striped pumpkin beetles, woolly aphids. and attract predatory wasps. they are excellent companions for Most vegetables, especially brassica (cabbage, broccoli, et al.), cucurbits (cucumbers, melons, squash) and solanum (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc.)

@@urbangardeningcanada by itself it will not eliminate them but it does repel. i grow many repelling plants in my little orchard and combined, the result is amazing. the key is diversity. also location makes a big difference. i setup my food forest as a wildlife habitat. in fact it is certified as such. in a complex eco system no one species will have impact, it is the web of organisms that lead to a balanced system. that is what we have to work on. i got into this in the 70's so it is nothing new. the best way to introduce diversity is to buy seeds off season when there are sales. some plants will attract good bugs. some deter bad bugs. the key is diversity at all levels. no mono-culture. start with the soil. build your soil every day. strong soil means strong plants which will repel bugs by themselves. add to that plants that aid, you will create an eco-system that minimizes loss. that said, 20% of what i grow is for the wildlife. i do not lose to the bad bugs though. i harvest and feed the deer, birds, etc.
