I of course DO NOT OWN, all rights belong tot he amazing Nat King Cole
There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise
Was he
And then one day
A magic day he came my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"
(instrumental interlude)
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

My husband Archie owned a nightclub in Glasgow and Nat King Cole came to sing there. They became good friends. What an outstanding man he was! He had little Natalie with him, she was just a little girl, and he was touring with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. They all sang at his club. This was because of an Artist's Strike in England. They weren't allowed to perform there, because there was a boycott of American Artists, so they went to Scotland instead and somehow ended up at my husband's Jazz Club! What a treat that must have been, he spent the rest of his life talking about it! They're all gone now, even sweet little Natalie has passed on. God rest you all in peace, I don't think we'll see the likes of you again...

It does. My only criticism of it, albeit it is a minor one. It's too short. I know a wise person once said, that no piece of art is ever finished, merely abandoned. Well, I think the composer gave up too soon with this one in my humble opinion. How about this: "And as he went away, His words came to haunt my day I thought of many things Fools and Kings. This remained with me... The greatest thing that I ever learned Was just to love and be loved in return" Reprise

This song makes me cry EVERY TIME I listen to it because the hardest thing to learn is how to accept being loved in return. The loving is easy. Accepting love from others can be. . .difficult when you've been convinced you are unlovable or unworthy of love.

A song written by a man who lived his adult life outdoors - reportedly under the second L of the HOLLYWOOD sign, no less - a man who refused royalties, preferring to divide them up and hand them to strangers...yes ladies and gentlemen, eden ahbez had the right to write this poem, later adapted into a song...I'm genuinely tearing up to think that there was such a selfless soul out there. You don't hear much about them anymore. But they're out there.

Should have said in the OP, his name was eden ahbez, and the lack of capitals are intentional, as he didn't believe in capitalising names that weren't righteous IE God. I also think it's an enchantingly beautiful song. I'm disturbed though by (what I know of) the life story of its writer and how that relates to the song's subject. I mean, if it had been written by one of eden abhez's friends, OK, great; but written by him, it can't not be understood as self-aggrandisement, self-mythologising, self-propaganda, can it? I was recently reading Orwell's essay, Reflections on Gandhi. I found this passage: 'In this yogi-ridden age, it is too readily assumed that “non-attachment” is not only better than a full acceptance of earthly life, but that the ordinary man only rejects it because it is too difficult: in other words, that the average human being is a failed saint. It is doubtful whether this is true. Many people genuinely do not wish to be saints, and it is probable that some who achieve or aspire to sainthood have never felt much temptation to be human beings.' Seems an important argument to make... I don't know much about eden ahbez, but I'm troubled by the thought that this is him telling everyone how special he is, how much better than others he is... And partly just because he, constitutionally, happens to be a lot more nomadic than most. Do you see what I'm saying? Beautiful song though.

There are few things we can all agree on these days so when I see 17K likes and zero dislikes for something, something which doesn't involve peanut butter, sex, ice cream or dare I say it, all three, it gives me hope. Many artists are deserving of that kind of appreciation but perhaps none more than this gentleman. Why? Because he was as gifted a pianist as he was a singer and, the perfect gentleman as well, at a time when he had every right and reason to be otherwise. That and the fact that he was taken from us much too soon in 1965 at the age of 45.

One of my father's favourite songs. He sang it beautifullly as Nat King Cole did. My father died 10 years ago and I was reminded beautifully of him as yesterday , on a special day for him which he used to remember every year, I entered a bookshop and this music was being played...

There are people out here in SunValley, near LA, that remember the man who wrote this Eden Ahbez. He was a recluse, a loner who lived outside in the woods. He was the real deal. Look up his story if you want to see someone who was selfless. He gave away his royalties to needy people even when he lived a spartan life. Not many like that anymore.

Are you the Rosie Vela who sang with Jeff Lynne and ELO in the Zoom Tour? When the audience applauded the little bit in Turn To Stone where the lyrics are sung quickly I thought "Yeah she deserves that applause, that was awesome." Thanks for the beautiful music. I hope you're happy with life. PS Nature Boy is also beautiful. I've only just discovered it at 63yo when Richard O'Brien used it in an interview to define success in life. Richard O'Brien and Jeff Lynne, a pair of geniuses.

Nat Cole could sing a song like no one else that I’ve ever heard. He was one of those one-of-a-kind people who come along once. He was also a first rate jazz pianist. As the story goes he was playing in a club one night and a patron asked him to sing a song and the rest is history. There’s a great picture of him on the cover of his album The Very Thought of You.

Possibly one of the most important philosophical song of all time. Ultimately life is about other people. And how you treat them. Everything else fades away. Evaporates. It's people who truly matter. Beautiful.
