19:16 (Shiki) He coughed his first blood at 13, and yet he kept writing haiku. He had TB, and died in his early 30s, and always knew that death was near, and yet he kept writing haiku, and not only kept writing it, he wrote about it, and he had a very large following, in Japan. And the last five years of his life he was in such pain that he was bedridden, but every morning he’d wake up, drag himself to the edge of the tatami and look out at his garden and wait to receive haiku, and write them down. So the stories are all in the book. I was just blown out by the stories.

16:17 And I wrote it, and it DID fit, it really fit with the book, and only then did I realize the whole book was an homage to Alan Ginsberg. He gave us the teaching, and I follow through.

23:25 (What would you say it is that high haiku for you that you love so much?) That it brings me into the present moment, and it gets me out of my own neuroses, and my own thoughts, and into a more present world-that’s nonhuman sometimes. Even if someone is talking about something human in the haiku, it takes me out of myself.

32:35 Well, I’ve trained myself. The voice is always there. I’ve just trained myself to understand that it’s gonna always be there. And it’s always trying to reduce me. And I don’t pay attention to it. I’ve learn’t not to. I mean, that’s what keeps us, you know, so we never write. So we never do anything. And, so I’ve learn’t to stand up to it. And it tries different angles. And I keep standing up to it, I guess. And when I don’t, and really listen to it, I get nothing done. So it’s part of, you know, understanding the human mind. And really, what are the materials we have his writers? Pen, paper, and the human mind! Where do ideas come from? Memories. Thoughts.
