Ms. Natalie, you'll probably never see this in a million years, but...Thank you for allowing "Carnival" to be played on the Aileen Wuornos documentary! I have so much empathy for Aileen, she grew up harder than I can probably even begin to relate to, and I truly believe the 1st male, whose death was attributed to her, really did violate her, and set her on the path that she took, along with the pressures of having Tyra to provide for as well. But, bless you, for having a heart!

I've always believed songs artists write and create in their 20 and 30's grow and mature over time and need to be renewed in their 50's and 60's. This is a real treat. Thanks Natalie. Everything changes, in this case for the good.

Orange-Cat-Bad agree. Same lyrics, two different worlds and mindsets. For me, this one is more Reggae. I love them both equally, but are for different times and moods. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder as is quality music is in tend ear (and heart) of the listener.

Man, you ain't kidding. Jennifer's guitar work was unbelievably perfect. I've been playing for 25 years and it's still one of my favorites. The playing on that song is so fluid, complimentary and well phrased. Unbelievable tone, feel. Every time I've heard a live version of this song, the guitar player almost ALWAYS overplays and ruins the song, lol. This song's guitar needs to breathe and beat. It's also SO New York City in the early 90s.

With age, to some, comes wisdom. You have been blessed with both. I have loved your music since the 90's. Now I'm sharing it with my sons. I work in the county jail in the max security section and can relate to the words in this song. The eyes of both the inmates and the officers shows me that the tempo of this version is perfect. Thank you, Natalie!!!

What a strange world… 2022, here’s me in Australia, learning about psychopathy.. true crime… Aileen… and wikipedia leads me here… huh. Guess I’ve been under a rock. But otherwise might never have come across Natalie Merchant. Worth it! What a beautiful voice, song, soul. That Merchant allowed the doco to use this song; huge props for that. Takes a big person. Obviously not trying to justify anything, but who can imagine what that poor kid went through to become what she became.

Aileen grew up harder than a lot of us can even begin to relate to. The 1st male that was killed, I truly believe that he violated her and she defended herself, but it set her on the path she decided to take. (It's been proven that male had a previous record of sexual & physical abuse against females...). I also think the pressure of providing for Tyra and being the only one bringing in any money, contributed to her decision to rob & kill the other men. But who knows the violence she encountered in her chosen profession?? I've watched and read a lot of true crime in the past 30 years, and there's so many friends & family of killers that always say, " I can't believe it. So-and-so isn't capable, they're too nice, etc." Well, the same could also be true about the men she killed. We can't possibly know, bc we were not there, if some or all of the other deaths were the result of violence perpetrated against Aileen, even if the friends & families say they were good, kind men. But I don't think killing her was the answer, but I also can't say that she would have, if given the chance, chose life in prison for herself - I think that was worse than death to her, especially at the end...Regardless, my prayers are with her & the males' families & friends bc those are the ones who are left to suffer...

It is a rare thing Natalie has. A unique perspective to her surroundings and the ability to put it to lyrical words. Not only her solo music, but also in her 10,000 Maniacs days. "Candy" is as relevant today then when it was, you know, a few years back.

Yes, the original version of Carnival was very good. I absolutely adored Jennifer Turner's guitar throughout the Tigerlily album. However, the new version is just gorgeous! The acoustic guitar solo is brilliant and fits in with the pacing and mood of the song. I just love a singer with an intellect as well as a voice. Natalie's incisive lyrics and great musical arrangements take her material to another level. Paradise ain't there, its here!

@portcullis56229 жыл бұрын
+wolramdave I wouldn't give up on other artists just yet. I am a few years older than you and I am still discovering great singers such as the awesome Rhiannon Giddens who I first heard sing live last year when I travelled the 200 miles to London to see Natalie Merchant sing a couple of traditional songs with Kronos Quartet as part of Nonesuch Records' 50th anniversary concert. It was well worth the effort as I hadn't seen Natalie sing live before and the real bonus was seeing Rhiannon Giddens sing a few songs. I went back to London this year to see Rhiannon with her own band and they were fabulous. A young singer-songwriter from London, Eliza Shaddad, was the support act and she was excellent as well-so there are still some fine young artists out there. I am also going to the R.A.H. (and Manchester) in March as I was unable to get tickets for Natalie's Barbican shows last year. I have decided to make the effort to see great artists while I still can, particularly as there are very long gaps between their 'tours' (if two or three shows can be called a tour!).

This is a solid re-recording. I was a little skeptical because a lot of artists re-record songs that are straight up hot garbage. This one is very good. It's a slight departure from the excellent original version but there's nothing wrong with that. It's a rethink and a reimagine.
@serkangolcukluoglu4503 жыл бұрын
Best way to enjoy this song??? Treat this song and the original one as completely 2 different songs. Original one was written in 95, young Natalie comes to NY City from a small town and she really is mesmerized with what she sees around her. Different perspective of life, music, circumstances, and she writes the song and it is arranged to her liking and we have the Carnival V1. Fast forward 20 years, more experience in life, things change, she comes a long way in this time frame, and re-records Carnival, based on what she feels like today and how she wants us to hear the song. Same lyrics, same chords, same song with 2 different arrangements, which to me, are equally beautiful. Will i ever stop listening to the original version because this one is out, absolutely not. They are both beautiful in their own ways.

A more soulful, wiser and overall deeper treatment. The simpler arrangement, without the hooky bounce of the original, conveys the wavelength of the song on a more personal level. Where the first held a bit of a swagger through those streets, this one is more of a contemplative stroll, not without the wry whimsy of the first, but more symbiotic with subtler vibes taking place.

Natilie. I can spell it I think. I was introduced to this or another album from the Columbia record club. I would randomly pick a CD by the review. The music rocked me. The prairie women song rocked me. I could picture it. I saw an interview where she was asked,; lyrics or music. She said, she'd rather dig a ditch than write lyrics (as I recall). The music is first. She's done a pretty good job.
