Do you have any advice for belting higher? I used to have a voice teacher that refused to teach me how to belt because she said "I wasn't born with it". Then I went to a different voice teacher who was fantastic but moved about a year after I started getting pretty comfortable belting. I'm really involved with theater and I haven't had a real voice teacher in a while due to expense. I don't know if you'll even see this but any advice would help!!

Meredith Andrews It has more to do in the diaphragm. Pushing that note up from the diaphragm up and out. You want to have a relaxed jaw and an open throat. Some good belts are sung with a raised soft palate. Never force it though. Some people have natural good belts. Some people belt improperly and some VCs (vocal coaches) are impatient with teaching someone how to belt properly. Sometimes it takes years to learn how to belt properly for some. It took me almost 2 years to figure out how to belt with resonance and tone, and higher than an E4 or Higher than the 4th octave which im a second tenor with lyric baritone qualities, once I started to get classically trained at 7 I was taught to always keep an open mind, an open throat, breathe correctly and NEVER try to force your voice to go higher than it can. It really depends on you though. The more you practice it and really study and get to know your voice with and without your coach, the better you will get at it. The three things I like to tell my students. Is don't force anything, don't rush anything, and loosen up. Try those 3 things and continue to practice and watch how your voice will change. Also, study your Major and Minor scales. Try to learn that peak note you belt out when you singing. Learning the note and the note before and after I tends to help a well. For example if you trying to belt a C#5 knowing that a D5 comes after I and C5 is before t helps a lot of singers. Also learn your range. A lot of the issues you may have with not belting higher is all of people don't know their voices. With extending your belting range comes with alot of time practice and studying your voice in depth. Also doing vocal stretches (which you can find on KZbin) while warming up can help as we'll. Last piece of advice. Train your ears!!! Its really important.
