This is still a favorite movie of preschoolers and kindergarteners. And dads/grandpas who either like NASCAR or reminisce about Route 66. It doesn't try to revolutionize anything about animation, but it's a textbook example of how to take a familiar story template and apply it to a new context, flesh out the characters, and give it broad appeal. All the story pieces are in the right place and have space to breathe. I've always had a soft spot for this one. Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm an old Sports Car Club of America race worker. Ignored this film for years because I heard it was NASCAR-centric. Big mistake on my part. My daughter brought over the DVD on a visitation weekend, and I spent most of it saying, "Holy S! that's really (real racing guy)!!" The announcers, some of the race cars, I was just blown away. That scene with McQueen (named after the actor, Steve was also a racer) chasing Sally down the windy road brought tears to my eyes..I've actually done something like that on a 'track day' where people are allowed to drive their street cars on the race track. To 'car people', it's like dancing with someone you love. Oh, and the yellow flag on an oval means 'accident - slow down'. IIRC, all flags are waved on ovals. For sportscars, if displayed motionless it means "do not pass anyone", displayed waving it means "you may have to avoid something". And the little car in front of the race cars is called a Pace Car in the US, and Safety Car elsewhere. RIP Paul Newman..he was a member of my Club. The rule was only talk about racing (he'd talk your ear off)..the movies were his 'day job' and he didn't want to be bothered with it. He was actually good at it, won four National Amateur Championships and placed 2nd in the 24hr race at Le Mans one time.

One of the things about this movie is that it manages to be fun for everyone while being doubly fun if you're a racing fan and get the references - Daryl Cartrip, Junior, "Mario Andretti knows my name!", who the King is, etc. You did miss that the Ferrari in the end wasn't just any Ferrari, it was seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher, who voiced his own car both in English and Italian. Guido and Luigi fainting is the appropriate response to him coming into their store - Michael was a god in Italy.

Hudson Motors Co. dominated NASCAR in the Early 1950s (specifically 1952-'54) with the Twin-H 6cyl Hornets. Doc's paint job is heavily based on the original factory "Fabulous Hudson Hornet" cars, like that of Marshall Teagues and Herb Thomas. This movie is so well done (as is the 3rd one) and really acts as a love letter to Route 66.

Also would like to point out that The King is actually based off (and voiced by) number 43 Richard Petty! He's considered one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time so it's cool they got him in this!

This movie is dedicated to Joe Ranft, who sadly passed away during the production in 2005 in a (tradgically irony) car accident. He and his firends were riding in Ranft's car when Elegba Earl, who was driving the car, lost control over it and crashed through a guard rail and went into the mouth of Narvarro River. Ranft and Earl were killed instantly in the impact while their friend Eric Frierson survived and got out through the sun roof. Ranft was the co-director of Cars and voices Red and Peterbilt. His memory was also decidated in Tim Burton's Copse Bride. Joe Ranft was the storyboard artist and story man of many Disney Animation films of the late 80's and early 90's such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and The Beast and the Pixar films Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc, plus The Brave Little Toaster, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. He also voiced many characters like Elmo St. Peters and the clown in Brave Little Toaster, Igor in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lenny in Toy Story, Heimlich and a fly in A Bug's Life, Wheezy in Toys Tory 2 (he also reprised as Heimligh in the credits blooopers), Pete "Claws" Ward in Monsters, Inc. (In the same movie, one of the scarers has the surname Ranft as a referee to him) and Jacques in Finding Nemo (his brother Jerome took over voiding him in Finding Dory).

What I really like is that the creators worked in showing the entire movie that the Dinoco sponsor was by the king’s side everytime, but after King’s last race he was put aside and inmediatly shearch for McQueen who would give him money. This reminded McQueen that many will act like they are your friend but because of profit. So he chose to stick with real friends, that believed in you when you has nothing to give them in return That was so sweet ❤ Love from Argentina 🇦🇷!!! Thank you for the reaction

Fun fact 1: Lightning is McQueen’s nickname. His first name is actually Montgomery. “Lightning” was given to him by the King and Chick Hicks. They call him that because of the way he can make quick sharp turns, like in the big wreak at the beginning when he avoids each and every other racer. Fun Fact 2: McQueen doesn’t have friends because he has trust issues. Back in racing school, he had a friend that betrayed him by not waking him up the morning of the final test. Ever since then McQueen didn’t trust anybody again. Fun Fact 3: McQueen is 29 years old in this movie. He was born in 1977. I can tell more if anybody wants to know.

I absolutely adore your Ted Lasso reactions and will watch them occasionally whenever I need a pick-me-up just because I’m such a big fan of that show and enjoy your reactions to it that much. This is definitely getting added to that playlist because this is my favorite movie (I was 6 when it came out and chose this movie to watch on repeat during my formative years lol). Seeing someone get to watch it for the first time and make the connections throughout the movie (Lightning using the things he learned from Mater and Doc in the last race) and enjoy it so much is so awesome. Hopefully you’ll watch the other 2 movies (Cars 2 is definitely a trip).

What I love about Cars and Cars 3 is that we never see Lightning McQueen actually win a race in Cars, which is important for his growth, while we have to see Cruz win a race in Cars 3 as it’s important for her growth. But yeah, Cars 2 decided to be a complete tonal shift.

Cars 2's main problem is how out of place it is. Like, it feels like a spinoff, not a sequel. And even as a spinoff, it just feels super weird that it takes place in the same universe since the tone is so vastly different. I will say, once you get past all that, it's pretty fun to watch because of how ridiculous it is. Like, that movie is probably one of the main reasons why people talk about how nonsensical the Cars universe is lol

its crazy because most people think racing is just about going around in circles, but there is so much skill and science and danger involved that when you really understand all that goes into it, it can be a really fun sport to watch! This movie did a great job of showing that and showcasing the values of racing. Even a simple pit stop could mean winning or loosing

As a big (but new) F1 fan, hearing Michael Schumacher at the end was so emotional. But also a few other F1 drivers have voiced some of the cars in the later movies (eg. Lewis Hamilton as himself, or Sebastian Vettel as Sebastian Schnell(German for fast), or Fernando Alonso as a assistant something (I don’t remember right now) in the Cars 3 movie) and like some comments already mentioned quite a few NASCAR drivers/legends have voiced characters in the movie franchise. So it’s really cool rewatching this movie, now knowing how much of racing and it’s history and different series really live in this movie.

The numbers for NASCAR or Indy car races can either mean the number of laps or the number of miles, depending on size of the track. (Ex. For bigger tracks and races like the Daytona 500 and Indy 500, it is 500 miles. And then smaller tracks like Bristol, such as the Food City 500 is 500 laps).

It's a really cute, sweet movie. It might be one of my favorite Owen Wilson roles, haha. I will say I DO love family road trips (despite hating driving haha - I'm mostly fine as a passenger) and that aspect of Americana (especially out west) and have done some of Route 66. So THAT whole aspect struck a big nerve with me.

Cars 2 is a fascist movie and I wish I was kidding. Like, did nobody think it was weird to have a racialized underclass of cars, that were simultaneously weak and cowardly, but also powerful industrialists with hands on certain levers of power? Did nobody think that was kind of anti-semitic? Replace lemons with jews, and it reads like a piece of nazi propaganda.

19:15 reminds me of an old candy shop. It had been there, at a little truck stop, for several decades, along with the roadside grill beside it. The restaurant is still there since the truckers still stop by there to eat, as well as the workers from the quarry next to it, but the candy shop that I always went to to buy candy closed down. Close to 400 kinds of candy and you could buy as much as you wanted for quite a lower price than your average grocery store. But, as I said, It closed down. And the biggest reason was due to the new highway.

In the italian dubbing to adapt the issue of having Italian speaking characters, they gave Luigi a strong accent from Emilia, while Guido speaks a very tight (and hard to understand) dialect from Modena. Guido's italian voice actor is Alex Zanardi, an ex racer who got in a terrible accident that made him lose his legs in 2001, and then got into paralympic racing on handbikes. Unfortunately he was in another terrible accident in 2020 that involved his head and we barely had any news about him since, much like it happened with Schumacher 😔
