I think what Natasha illustrates really well in this insight into her past is that you should always believe in yourself, in your abilities and potential, regardless of the attempts by others to limit you or knock you off your path. Having two powerful figures in an artistic person's life, their art teacher and their English teacher completely deter them would be completely devastating for a lot of people. They would give up. Despite the lack of belief of "experts" she still managed to become successful. I've seen her appear on tv on different shows for years and now she has her own netflix special. She has a lifestyle that is so unlike what anyone around her would ever expect for her. And she's creatively fulfilled. Believe in your talents, your dreams and your passions. And even if you fail, at least you didn't let other people limit you. Daring to fail on your own is an accomplishment of its own right.

It wouldn't be the worst thing if we could ALL have someone like Sam Jones asking us insightful questions the way he does with these famous folks. It seems like part celebrity interview, part buddy therapy.

I really don’t understand why a teacher would even say that to a student even if they believe or right. What is the point.

Sadly, there are some people who don't want others to do any better than they themselves did, and sometimes those people become teachers. Then there are the teachers who are either burnt out or just don't understand their jobs. Natasha's art teacher didn't feel like teaching perspective so she just said, you're not an artist. I had a choral teacher like this. If the students could already sing, they were her stars. If they couldn't sing, they were shoved in the back and treated like nuisances. All the naturally gifted singers thought she was the best teacher. All the kids who wanted to learn to sing saw her for what she was.

Also, for a Midwesterner of her age, the culture would have discouraged her from doing anything that didn't have an immediate return. An artist's income is all over the place while a retail employee has a steady check, so that's what would matter to an inland working-class culture. The flyover states are really big on the kids moving out when they turn 18 so they don't want legal adults who can't pay the bills because they weren't taught to ignore their interests when they were 8.

Theomite I see your point. I think it’s really inappropriate for a teacher to discourage a student like that. It’s not like she gave her passive remark such as “maybe you should think about ....etc”. She flat out said you suck. While I think it’s terrible either way it’s more appropriate for a parent to talk like that to their child. They are the one raising them.

From Rockford. Fuck Rockford. Let's call it a small town as an insult! We never even said we were from Rockford, we always said we were from Chicago because we were ashamed to be from there.

I grew up in a horrible city in Illinois also. It's a disadvantage. She's successful because most likely she's very intelligent and very persistent.

Not only has she said in other instances that she has been back there, but it's still a 'small town' in the midwest as far as the eye of America goes. Maybe it was very very different when she was growing up than how it is now, but it's still statistically one of the most dangerous places to live in in the US, only safer than 4% of towns/cities in the nation. It doesn't look like a nice place to live or grow up, and doesn't look like a place that will make any more than "Walmart Employee's" if left to do things purely on its lonesome. I understand that it's probably nicer than it was but you can only polish something so much before you're forced to fix the infrastructure.

it's not a coincidence; Landford was based on Rockford ... on the show, Landford is said to be about 70 miles west of Chicago, which Rockford IS.

"Small town". Rockford is the second biggest city in Illinois. And "mathematical and hard" is not my thing. On perspective, essential to visual art. Please, girlfriend, real artists embrace "mathematical and hard".
