I remember writing "Moment" just over a year ago. I was at Emile's studio in NYC (RIP), working on the acapella to "AhHa" and I decided to steal his omnichord because I'd heard a lot of songwriters who don't play instruments have been known to use one to find different chords without having to sing the song to an instrumentalist. So I sat around my apartment strumming the stupid thing with no real luck. Put it down. And almost instantly started writing "Moment". I was particularly excited cause in my head it sounded like a really small and nonchalant chorus- and despite my track record at the time- I've always been a bigger fan of the less obvious chorus that ends up growing on you. Plus the verses I'd started writing really made it feel like a country version of "one more try" by George Michael (one of my all time favorite songs). I recorded the first verse and chorus acapella and sent it off to Jeff to get his thoughts on it. He freaked out about as much as I'd ever heard him freak out, and sent it back with drums and other instrumentation. Apparently he was in the studio with Shania Twain when he'd gotten my email (awesome factoid), and was really inspired by the work they were doing. Little known fact (or not- who really knows anymore)- I love country music. I dunno if it's the Iowa or the Arizona- but it's not like when I was in my late teens and I was like "the only country I listen to is Johnny Cash and Whiskeytown". No. These days I'm into some really shitty country. Pickup trucks. Bad fashion. Whatever. My ears gravitate to it. Sometimes I hate myself for it. But it doesn't stop me from listening. Anyway- Jeff's instrumental accompanying track was awesome. I sat on it for a few weeks before he came to New York, and I believe it was the first song he, Emile and I worked on all together for this album. By the time we all got into a room- I wanted it to feel like a country version of my favorite song of all time "Nothing Compares 2 U", but with Mutt Lange drums. If that sounds like a weird mash up- that's because it is. Emile did an incredible job on the drums. I remember writing that weird/depressing second verse pre chorus in about five minutes because I thought the song felt a little flat, and I'm so happy I did, cause it has some of my favorite lyrics I've ever written (I wrote the father dying line based off of my obsession with the "all the flowers that you planted mama" from "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Also- I'm horrendous with writing and singing harmonies. I've always been fortunate to be surrounded by people who could cover my ass when it came time to write a harmony. But I pulled that last chorus harmony out of thin air. And I'll say that to this day- it's been the toughest notes I've ever had to sing.

About half of my friends are moving away for college, schools starting again after the greatest summer I’ve ever had, and the other half of my friends I’ve stopped talking to because they never have anything good to say. I feel all alone, and I don’t know what to do. Maybe there is nothing to do, no matter how hard that is to swallow. Maybe there is nothing I can do, but if there is, I will find it. This song helps, it helps a lot. Thank you Nate Ruess, I can’t tell you what I would give to go to a concert or talk to you.

I remember that I was a dedicated fan of Fun for some time. Once the band broke up, and Nate made a solo career, I kept listening. I heard this song, and for some reason I never forgot it and still know the lyrics to this day, but it had always just dwelled in the back of my head. I finally got reminded of it, re-downloaded it onto my phone and took another listen. I kept listening to it quite a bit, and I now have taken a trip back to the time when I used to still be a dedicated listener to this amazing singer.

I discovered this band in 2015. And 2015 was a special year, this song is in my heart forever. It was present in my adolescence and still continues. She reminds me of my feelings and struggles that I still go through today because what she really needs is “I need a moment”. There are loves in our lives that are difficult to overcome and what we have left is to accept and move on even with so many memories and feelings that hurt... 13/02/2024

Well, you were burning up the sky Looking for a light when you saved me I was convinced no one would take me You turned and took me by the hand hmmmm... But now that look in your eyes All of your sighs are saying "Go, please" "Leave me alone and leave you lonely" It looks as though we've reached the end Well, I'm fine I just need a moment I'm alright , right here on the floor Well, I'm fine I just need a moment to cry And when I think about the ways That you never waste your breath to say you love me How you always held your lost loves above me As you kept your other hand on the door Yet I'll admit I might miss Every scar and every wish that we'd make But our wishes were nothing but ways To act as if we could use the change Well, maybe one of these days We'll cross each other on a train to our new lives We could talk about the old times And how we're glad we made it out alive But for now I'll sit and drink As I think about the night that your father died And I said I'd never leave your side We once swore we could defeat this Therefore, please excuse this little bit of weakness, oh .... Well, I'm fine I just need a moment of your time To get all my things and let go Well, I'm fine I just need a moment to say goodbye Well, Lord give me a reason C'mon, show me you love me I don't want to let it go Just to watch it fly And Lord, give me a moment Any of it, show me I don't want to feel it I don't wanna watch it go by Because I'm fine I just need a moment I'm alright right here on the floor Well, I'm fine I just need a moment to say I'm fine I need a moment I'm alright here on the floor Well, I'm fine I just need a moment to cry

I really love the entire song, but there are parts where Nate is perfect. One of those is the perfect transition he does at 3:00 from "and lord give me a moment" to "..any of it" where he doesn't do any pause and "any" is just the continuation of "moment". Love it.

The songs just hit a chord on a human level whether its Moment and hits a note of sadness and truth or something happy on the album like Light My Fire... Just amazing I stumbled on it a week ago on itunes through one of the random ebay/facebook "ads" Thanks for uploading such a nice video too that has the art to mesh so well with the music and lyrics... Wonderful pipes man!! I don't know how involved Nate is in the the writing, but I mean I love FUN- I can listen to the two albums from start to finish... if I road trip their music is that great...great songs with meaning, lyrics, just great music and Nate continues with blessing the world with wonderful music and now I have 3 beautiful pieces of music that I will always love.

Officer Mudd Nate writes all his own songs (just won an award from Songwriters Hall of Fame).....its one of the reasons why there is such a long time between albums as he says he doesn't like to write while on tour. He writes the lyrics and then, since he doesn't play an instrument, sings the melodies to people who can translate them into musical notes.
@angelfan198320029 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the information!! Maybe that is why his music and the vocals do seem to real on every track because he has a connection to this work- as opposed to singers that hardly ever write anything... and they can still be good singers but on aa ten track album only have couple of songs that are like wow... where as like The Grand Romantic I can't pick a favorite song yet I will pick one and then listen to the next track and think oh yea... its just a great album
@badgerfann36189 жыл бұрын
Officer Mudd If you haven't yet, listen to the album Dog Problems by the Format (Nate's band before fun.).....he wrote it after breaking up with his high school girlfriend. It's his best work lyrically imo. Album's almost 10 years old and still resonates. Also the song "Swans" by the Format....was written for a movie and band broke up before ever making a studio recording, but you can find videos of the live performances Btw.....totally agree about Grand Romantic.....can't decide what song I like best...and the entire back half has amazing vocals.
