Loved this! "But the good news here is that: You don't have to wait till you get that dream home, or job, or car, or wife, or husband, or boyfriend. Life is right now. And you have everything that you need to be completely content right now in this moment - if the Holy Spirit is living inside you."

My husband and I went through this at the beginning of this year. We were completely debt free except for our mortgage but weren’t fulfilled. Since then, we sold our house and are living in a one bedroom apartment while planning to build a small house in the country. Our goals have shifted to avoid debt altogether when we do build and saving to help our church plant new churches in spiritually dark places across the country. This change has certainly made an impact on our reason for going to work everyday. We have less than we’ve had in years but couldn’t be happier.

Yes! Owning nice things can be great, but you don't own something you haven't paid for, the creditor does. At least with houses you can usually right yourself if you make a mistake. The insane thing is people who go into debt for things like fancy vehicles, that start dropping in value the second they're driven off the lot!

Me and my husband paid off our first house within 5 years (650 sq ft. nothing fancy) and now we moved to a bigger house paid with cash that was further away from our family than we would have wanted but it's big enough to start a family We are both working part-time and always have more than enough money for things. Not having debt has been the best decision we have ever made.

Thank you guys so much for your vulnerability and obedience to God. I’ve been struggling a lot with contentment. My husband and I live in an apartment and I’ve dreamed of living in a home for a long time. I would be very envious of those who have the home I desire, which I know is sin. Seeing you guys talk about this has helped me to remember that true satisfaction can only come from God. If I can’t be content in an apartment I can’t be content in a house, I’ll always want more. Thank you guys, I pray God will continually help us to be content in him only in Jesus’ name.

I'm not sure I've ever left a comment on KZbin, but I wanted to thank you for sharing your experience. We have a relatively small house for our family size. We also homeschool and often work from home. Buying a larger house was our tentative plan, but just in the last few weeks, I've felt unsure about a new home being what we are called to and have been praying for clarity. Your willingness to openly share your experience almost feels like an answer to my prayers. Thank you so much.

The house was our only debt and now have been traveling with hubby’s new job ever since. We went into a tiny amount of debt so as not yo touch our house cash for hubby to take classes for his new job but nowhere near as much debt as a mortgage! We should be buying a house for cash in the next few weeks Lord willing in a new state and then paying off our little debt with his new job since we finally won’t have travel expenses anymore. 😮‍💨 yes we are all feeling this way.

One of the wives ended up dying of brain cancer and the other wife died unexpectedly from a flu virus that led to complications (both before retiring). Thank you for sharing and being open. My fiance and I are currently in the market for a house and this video has pushed me to make sure we only buy a house we can comfortably afford versus something outrageous that we would have to work our butts off daily for. Time and how I spend it is very important to me and honestly we don't need as big of a house as our brain makes us thing. We don't need all the stuff we have. We could live on the bare minimum and be perfectly fine. But this world tricks us and distracts us and greed is definitely an underlying problem that not a lot of us know we even have. Thanks again.

@@megangibbs4010 do you think it's possible that sometimes as people we are too quick to come to conclusions? If I make 100 million a year, am I that greedy to live in a million dollar home? I think we need to consider ratios, and also consider we don't know what people are doing with the other 99million. Fancy stuff will always be around, and so will the poor, I don't think one person can solve poverty (or cause it) by being in a big house. Again, we don't know what happens to the other 99million cause maybe it's being donated to poor, so is a million dollar house in that context bad? I don't want to sound accusatory, just offering a different perspective!

I am in agreement with you guys about how our Lord used this experience to teach a beautiful life lesson! A lesson you can share with many! We worship an Awesome God who loves us and only wants what is good and profitable for us. My hubby and I have a ministry where we minister to the homeless in our home. Every Saturday we have church in our house and have been doing this for around 15 years. We invite the homeless to our home to take a shower, get clean clothes, have a hot meal and hear the word of God. When we got this home it was an answer to prayer. We had prayed and asked the Lord if He would give us a home we would bring Him Glory with the home. We had no idea that we would be ministering to the homeless in this home. We have done it only because He has work through us to will and do of His good pleasure! The Lord shows us all the time how this ministry is important to Him. We do not have social media, we do not advertise this ministry and yet we have people who hear about us and bring offerings and gifts for the homeless. I am here to testify that God is good! I am so happy for you guys Nate and Sutton! I look forward to seeing what God has planned for you! If anyone is interested in seeing a video of our homeless ministry, there is a video on my KZbin page. The video starts in the park with the homeless and then to our home. It was from Christmas a few years ago.

Thank you for your humility and honesty. I think this will speak to many people and I pray the Lord convicts the hearts of those with ears to hear. My husband and I bought our home 20 years ago and paid it off in 7 years. It took some self control and sacrifice, but it was one of the best decisions we made. We are free from the bandage of debt and we can work as little or as much as we desire now. It has left us open to spend time and witness Christ to people. Time is such a valuable commodity and it should be protected and cherished. Now more than ever, people are hurting and scared. They need someone to talk to and they need to hear the hope that lies within us which is Christ. The world doesn't offer any hope and what a lesson you've learned with this home. There is no lasting satisfaction in anything this world has to offer. God bless you and your beautiful family. This is a decision you will never regret. Much respect to you both. God is definitely glorified as well.

Hi there, I'm writing to you from Burkina Faso, West-Africa, but I am Belgian (and did know Bart!). I’m happy to follow you and love how you’re not afraid to share the good and the hard with the world! Thank you for listening to Gods voice and share it with us. I do think though that dept is not necessarily the real (or only) problem. Saying that avoiding dept is the key, might be understood by some people as if having even more money WOULD be the solution. Imagine if you had bought this house without any dept. Would you not feel this same emptiness and deception? The story you shared in your last video about the harvester who always wanted to build and harvest more, didn’t find happiness and contentment at all, not because of dept, but because he looked for happiness in the wrong place. I love how it’s put in 1 Tim 6:6, saying that faith in God is real wealth, IF you learn to be satisfied about what you have. And verses 7-10: 7 When we came into the world, we brought nothing. And when we die, we can take nothing out. 8 So, if we have food and clothes, we will be satisfied with that. 9 People who want to be rich bring temptations to themselves. They are caught in a trap. They begin to want many foolish things that will hurt them. These things ruin and destroy people. 10 The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people have turned away from what we believe because they want to get more and more money. But they have caused themselves a lot of pain and sorrow. Sorry for my preachings 😊, I did some studies about “joy” to share with streetkids in Burkina Faso recently (ooooh yes, they think having money will make them happy!) and we shared with them the Biblical truth: “Don’t save treasures for yourselves here on earth. Moths and rust will destroy them. And thieves can break into your house and steal them. Instead, save your treasures in heaven, where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust and where thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your treasure is. » It's a great lesson for all of us and the problem is not WHAT we have (of course poverty is not God’s will!), but where we focus on in our lives. Thanks for the good work you’re doing and thanks for inspiring many!! love! irene

Haha yep, we're definitely in that same boat LOL Since we moved into the house Oct 2021(literally since we walked through the doors) we've been under a weight... To the point that within 6 months I was so stressed about the repairs/maintenance that I ended up with a HORRIBLE case of shingles (on my scalp, in my ear, on my eye...horrible). When we were searching we had put offers into homes across several states, over list price, the whole gambit, and God kept shutting doors. God opened a door for this house and we knew God brought us here; just didn't know *why*. We too see that God was using it to teach us lessons we couldn't have learned otherwise. For us it's not the cost of the mortgage/debt, we pay less now than we did for our rental; for us it's being tied down and feeling like we don't have the freedom to go and do *when* God puts things on our hearts. God told us to prepare for a move, so that's what we're doing... We have no idea when or how, but trust that when God gives the directive He'll provide the means; even if we take a loss on the house. I'll be praying for you guys!

Nothing worldly feels better than the freedom of no debt. We’ve had zero debt since we were 40 and it has been such a huge blessing to live the last 20 years in that freedom and peace. Christians should lead the way in this and it is awesome that you are being transparent about this. We are called to be set apart and I know full well how hard it is to live more humbly than those around us. Have you heard of the hedonic treadmill?? It is simply the desire for more and more and once we get what we want, the length of time that we feel contentment lessens with each new thing. The cure?…Jump off the treadmill!! God bless you in this new found revelation. I believe you will feel like a new man and it sounds as if you already do❤

I live on my own and so work is my main focus, to the detriment of all of my relationships. I have beautiful furniture and clothes - and it feels empty. I always dreamed of reaching this level of income and it is literally costing me my joy, my freedom and relationships. I want to get off of the hamster wheel and love people and nurture my relationship with God and enjoy His creation. This is not worth it.

I think that this is a perfect lesson for the season of Christmas, especially for me. When asking for what I wanted for Christmas I put down what I mostly wanted and thought I needed (ex: cute trendy clothes for senior year). But the things that I desire aren't what my soul truly needs. More than the external my soul needs God. My soul needs His direction. His wise words. His peace and joy. His patience. Through y'all amazing video I can take away that I have everything I need to be content right now. And getting some cute clothes isn't going to make me more content than spending this moment today with the Lord. I am not going to be happy when Christmas day arrives, or when I eat or when I watch tv or when I go to a party or when something happens in the future. Let's be content today. Let's live today and not depend on anything or anyone other than GOD for our joy/happiness!

I just went through the same experience. My husband and I both have paid off cars but I was unhappy driving the truck we have so we traded it in and now we have an 8k loan on a mid size car. I realized having the car payment which isn’t much made me feel like I have to work more and harder to pay the payment we have now. I realized it wasn’t worth the stress and wish we didn’t trade in the very nice payed off truck we had. Lesson learned here for me and my family. We have recently thought of scaling down on the house as well and buy something smaller to have a paid off house.

I appreciate both of your attitudes, My husband passed away in 2015 from leukemia and I’m now the one to provide to pay bills. My health went down hill during his fight for life of about 20 months and we always lived on a one income household. I was a stay at home mom. So when all this Covid stuff started I made a decision to live with less. Has it always been easy? No! But God has always provided, for which I am grateful! He’s still doing it! (Clarification…. I didn’t go to work until 2018. ) I’m back in the classroom now but it’s not been easy for me to work away from home after being a stay at home mom. My husband didn’t leave any debt which has been such a blessing! We never had a lot of money and didn’t do a lot of things others did. When our two oldest children went to college, they had to either work enough or borrow because we didn’t have it. I often think of the verse in the Bible that says “Give me neither poverty nor riches, “ he didn’t want poverty so he wouldn’t have a desire to steal, and he didn’t want riches that he would forget God. ( I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having money,) God bless you and your family! God has led you thus far , He will continue to do so as you trust Him! ❤

Good for you guys! My husband and I have been completely debt free for a year and the sense of peace and freedom that we have is amazing. We would like to get a bigger house in a nicer area, but we are saving up until we are in a position to do so. If you are not familiar with Dave Ramsey, I strongly recommend listening to his show and his books. Also, my husband is a realtor, and he always says there is no such thing as a “dream house” because dreams change and people change. Best of luck to you guys and God bless you!

As someone who recently became debt free, I can relate to the feeling that comes with being deep in the hole and not seeing much hope for a way out after crunching the numbers about four and a half years ago and realizing how much money I owed someone else. So far I have never been in a position to buy a house, but being up to my eyeballs in consumer debt was not a good feeling. Praise God for helping me break free of it over the past four and a half years!

There is something to be said for not owing anyone a dime. We bought a beautiful condo in a beautiful resort as an investment. My husband took a new job that took us to east coast, hated it so he quit and we came back to our condo. We lived there for 2 years and my husband explored being "retired". He got bored, I got bored so we bought a nice house across town (paid cash) and rented the condo for $5500 per month. We are one year in, have used the rental income to pay expenses for both properties and paid for the remodel of our new home. There is no greater feeling than waking up every day just happy! No worries about anything. Side note, my husband , after 20 years of being an executive in the retail world decided he would volunteer at the resort and that morphed into him now being the General Manager. He comes home from work every day singing and happy, can't wait to go to work in the mornings. He is a people person and is loving the hospitality industry. Life is good but it's so great to not have mortgages or car payments and investment money put away in case he decides to stop working.

My husband struggles with this too. I handle the finances but he worries about them because he’s been drilled all his life with “the man is the head of the household and the man provides for his family” so he takes the burden on himself completely and almost makes himself sick sometimes with trying to make more money and handle debt and have all the things he thinks we should have. I tell him all the time, “So what if we lose it all? God always provides. We have options others don’t. We have family, we have friends, we have degrees and experience.” I can be happy anywhere but he struggles to just be present and happy sometimes because it goes against what he’s been taught and told all his life. We’d have more money if we stopped paying tithes and giving to charities but God has sent each thing to us and if we lose ourselves trying to gain “security” it’s not worth it. It’s a hard lesson to learn but you’re definitely not alone. I love the way you guys worded this. It comes down to realizing the life we’ve planned and hoped and prayed for may not be what God has for us but we have to trust his way is better. This is something I always think over around Christmas especially. Love this video! This is something so many people struggle with. I appreciate you guys sharing this!

This was encouraging to watch, especially since I had been praying that your public life would be less about success and materialism. As believers we are all on a journey of sanctification and ultimately to find our everything in Jesus, no matter our outward circumstances. We can all point out the errors of others (and at times it is necessary to do that as brothers and sisters in Christ), but we should also rejoice when the Spirit is at work, reminding us that our citizenship is in heaven. Being debt free is one way we can demonstrate to the Lord that His provision is enough and until there is more provision, we wait. A lot of what we wrestle with is the culture we are surrounded by and this culture is one of decadence, personal comforts and the lie that we should have them all NOW. May God bless you as you seek to honor Him (not your KZbin viewers, although there is a measure of accountability and genuineness there too in having a more public life) and live a more simple life.

Great insight and lesson learned. Buyers remorse can teach us a great lesson. Perhaps you might consider renting for a while and not rush into a home. There is nothing wrong with renting and saving and not having the great responsibility of home ownership until you are ready again. A HUGE trap these days is social media and comparison; consumerism, materialism, it all goes hand in hand. I started IG to see decorating, recipes, humor and it is nothing but ads, selling stuff, constant upgrades to homes, sell sell sell. It has been a huge turn off. It's like a million infomercials on tv. You guys are becoming so wise with your decision. You won't regret it. We have been in our one story modest home for 36 years. Everyone our age (65) were building bigger and better new homes. We kept doing little projects here and there as we could afford it and we still love our home. Our grown sons always tell us to never sell our home as it is the home they grew up in. The financial freedom we have right now is wonderful. Thank you for sharing your authentic, honest lesson for us all. Wish you all the best!!

I think there is a way to live in (God-given) abundance without letting it consume you. Could it be that God wants you to just learn how to have control over the abundance rather than rejecting it? If the house was a blessing from God and He opened the door for you to be able to purchase it, maybe He is in fact blessing you and that the Holy Spirits is just teaching you right now to be careful not to let these blessings take over you? Sometimes we're just being tested by God to see whether we would still put Him first. Kinda like Abraham-Isaac-altar moment. He doesn't really wanna take away the blessing He gave you or runaway from it. He just wants you to learn the lesson and prove your hearts.

It’s an extremely privileged thing to be able to live without debt. I understand the principle of avoiding debt, and agree with it to a reasonable extent. But most people will never be able to own a home without a mortgage. The idea of being tied to a “payment” is a bit silly when the alternative for most people would be that they’d be tied to rent, not a smaller house that they paid cash for (not possible for most people).

I understand where you’re coming from completely! However, Nate and Sutton, among many others have worked very hard and worked hard spiritually as well, in which God has blessed them with finances to be able to do these things and to be able to live without debt. It’s not a possibility for everyone yes, but everyone does have the opportunity to work hard enough to get there! Hopefully everyone is able to but working hard in life and in spiritually will bless anyone beyond belief. For most people they will always be tied to a payment for a time period, but the goal is to work hard and SMART (not just hard) in order to get out of payments and debts. It is 1000% possible!!! Just got to have faith.

It was such an encouragement to us. We want to buy small, pay it off, have rentals, and live life not serving a mortgage only serving the Lord, and enjoying the freedom in that. We have wrestled with doubt of if it was even possible. A powerful testimony of a powerful truth. Thank you for sharing. Its inspiring to see how God is guiding you and teaching you through His spirit. In my church we have modern prophets and apostles who have been exhorting us to get out of debt for decades. That’s a signature of prophets, always ahead of their time. I love how God gives direction to His children on as many levels and from as many inspired sources as He can, He just wants us to live by truth so we can have joy and freedom! It’s beautiful.

this happened to us- we sold that house, paid off student debt with the equity, moved into a 700 sq ft apt, saved for a down payment, bought a house that was much more reasonable and 2 years in, it’s almost completely paid off. We have to have a box to live in and I don’t wanna be a slave to rent (which is someone else’s debt) so I wanted to be completely debt free. NOTHING LIKE IT. WE ARE FREE!!!! For what it’s worth, I’m atheist. And I still think it all applies. Spiritually I’m happier regardless.

I love this - thanks for being transparent and honest enough to share it. Absolutely no one is perfect. We all make mistakes, but what’s most important is that you are willing to listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit’s restlessness and seek the Lord for counsel to understand and then take radical steps to course correct early in life so you can live an even more blessed and peaceful life, one that the Lord created for you, instead of living by the world’s deceptive standards that will rob you and keep you in bondage. I can’t wait to receive updates and more lessons from your journey. God bless you ; may He give you more wisdom and favor as you take these courageous next steps. 🙏🏻
