My whole family and I have had the stomach flu this week. My kids don’t watch a lot of tv but when they are sick they get to watch a show called “trash truck” my sweet four year old asked if I wanted to watch it with them. I said no thanks. And she said, with perfect pronunciation of his name, “oh maybe you wanna watch Nate Bargatze!” She knows Nate is what makes me and my husband laugh always and since I was sick she thought it might make me feel better. Now I’m sitting doing just what she said. Also I sometimes listen to the podcast in my AirPods while I’m serving them lunch or something so they’ll see me laughing etc. one day I was just randomly thinking of something and laughed and she said “what mama? Oh are you laughing at Nate bargatze” Thanks for bringing all the laughter to this family nateland!

I loved this episode on California. I was born there years ago and left because of a car accident that took my parents. It was interesting to hear so much about my home state. The highlight of this episode was seeing a Vandy coaster I made under Nick’s glass of water. I look forward to Wednesday’s, thank you very much!

Born and raised in the Bay Area. I was 3 years old and I remember the 1989 earthquake. My dad dropped me off at my Nona’s house in San Francisco. He was off to see the Battle of the Bays (Giants vs A’s game). He dropped us off and then took the Muni Bus to the game (which mind you is run on electrical). After the quake he wasn’t able to get back to pick up my sister and I on Muni because all electrical was down and Muni stopped running. So he had to walk from Candlestick park to the excelsior district in sf to get us. Like I said I was only 3 but I remember it. In my little imagination I thought a huge giant was stomping around my Nona’s house and shaking everything. I had no idea what an earthquake was. My dad still has a poster from that game. Side note, I know how much you guys love fast food…you should come to visit where i live, Pacifica. We’re known for having the most beautiful Taco Bell in the world 😂 It’s on the beach! Pacifica Ca, about 15 minutes south of San Francisco. Were famous for it!

When the 1989 earthquake shook the Bay Area, I was almost 2 years old, so I don’t remember it. My mom always told me that while pictures and hanging plants came crashing to the floor, I slept soundly in my crib. Years later, I discovered she left out a tiny detail: Earlier that day, she accidentally left an open bottle of NyQuil within my reach, and I helped myself. I don’t know which is more impressive, sleeping through the 6.9 earthquake or surviving accidental alcohol poisoning. Either way, it gives a new meaning to "sleeping like a baby."

The Nooksack Giant was a Coast Douglas-fir tree that was cut down in the 1890s and was the tallest tree ever recorded at the time. It was 465 feet tall and 34 feet in circumference when it was felled. The New York Times called the tree's destruction a "crime" and a "truly pitiable tale". The Morning Times said that if the wood was sawed into one-inch strips, it would reach from Whatcom to China.

When you mentioned Olympia being the capital of Washington State, then immediately say that the capital is usually in the middle of the state (Olympia is on the west side of Washington), it reminded me of a bit of Washington State history. Ellensburg, which is in the middle of Washington, had a bid in to be Washington's capital, but lost the vote. However, a castle-like building was built before the vote to be the governor's mansion. They lost the vote, but still have the building. It is now an apartment complex 😂

The tallest redwoods are the coastal variety whereas the biggest around are the giant variety that live in the Sierra mountains between 4500-7000 ft elevation. That’s also where the giant mosquitoes live. I’ve seen ‘em as big as a quarter. Their bites don’t itch but you might get a little lightheaded. The small, itchy as hell kind live everywhere else but it’s so dry their season is short.

1:33:20 This is what baffled me about the first time I went to Alcatraz was 1) how close the city is and how close freedom would *seem*, but also 2) how choppy the water and weather is, knowing there are sharks and that even though salvation is close, good luck getting out and away in one piece. Like, it was well chosen as a prison location but just too costly to upkeep.

I was at a red light, oncoming traffic was moving but my arrow was red. The guy behind me laid down on his horn, hard. I don’t know what he wanted me to do. Light was red, cars were coming, I don’t know where he expected me to go. Another time I started around a car that was turning left at a light and all of a sudden he cut right to block me and stopped. I was on my way to work, too early to be drunk, so I did what they do, I laid down on my horn and didn’t let up until he moved.
