Queensryche had two GREAT albums with Operation: Mindcrime and Empire. Then the popular music moved on from metal and big hair rock to grunge and alternative rock in the 90s, and suddenly prog metal wasn't as fashionable as before. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Just bad timing really.

@j800r_aswell4 жыл бұрын
@@zzzzzzzz8498 Your register is usually based on where your voice most naturally sits. Listen to his speaking voice along with more of his voice over the years. He is most comfortable in the baritone register. People forget and/or easily overlook this because of his insane otherworldly talent and ability to sustain an incredible, heavily reinforced mixed voice up to as high as a G5. Every voice deepens a little over time. As his did, he lost the insane ability to belt out a fifth octave note in mixed voice like it was nothing and spends most of his time in his natural baritone register so as to sustain his voice (touring can destroy a voice if pushed too hard). He still has a high extension that gets him pretty much up there to this day but he stopped regular singing in that register after his 20s as it simply wasn't sustainable. People mistakenly believing him to be a tenor simply due to a very brief point in his life when he was very young and could get away with feats no person could as they age dismiss his more recent performances believing he's "lost his voice" when in fact the power, timbre and technique are all still there. He just merely sings where his voice has always naturally sat.

Queensryche had many much better songs but this one is popular with reactors because of the high notes. They always reminded me of Queen in the regard that they had such an overwhelmingly-talented lead singer that you barely noticed the other great singers in the band. In this case, the "lads" are adding nice little touches here and there while Chris DeGarmo (lead guitar) is backing Geoff's vocals. Often, while listening to Queen, people didn't realize the parts actually sung by either Brian or Roger. I didn't know for many years that the opening verses of "Who Wants To Live Forever" were sung by Brian (who wrote the song) in the recording though Freddie sang them live. Very different bands but, also, very talented. Stay safe everyone. Cheers from Florida.

Growing up, I did a lot of vocal training, and took some training in guitar, flute and piano. And I HATED what I thought was Metal music. The stuff I knew of sounded like someone just put microphones near Harrier jets, and had them take off and land. Dreadful. I had NO idea that THIS sort of thing was possible until recently. High quality vocal skills and excellent musicianship. I did have some DIO stuff, because someone I worked with insisted that I give Dio a chance. Loved Dio. And AC/DC. But that was pretty much it. Now I'm finding out that bands like Nightwish ( cue fangirl shrieks and hysterical collapse) exist, and that there is so much more out there than the groups who try to sound like revving jet engines. You're going to get a lot of requests for the album Operation: Mindcrime. Two points for you: 1) Don't listen to just one song for the sake of a reaction. The music is phenomenal, but it also tells an extremely linear story. The album is a rock opera, and listening intently to one song out of context with the storyline defeats the experience. 2) Songs aside, you should listen to the technical aspect in Geoff Tate's performance on the album. O:MC is my favorite album of all time. It changed my life. And even now, 32 years later, I STILL find something new when I listen. The technical depth that went into production is unmatched. As brilliant as GT's front vocals are, his backing tracks are simply not of this world. Seriously, give it a listen. Don't even do it for a reaction. Just do it in your own time. It's more than just an album. It really is an experience.

Nat. Everything by the RYCHE is epic. They don't sound the same over and over. All their albums kick arse. All are amazing. Do yourself a favor brother. Listen to them all!

"I can, actually, hear notes that aren't being played..." Thank you!!! That perfectly expresses my experiences with Geoff Tate, and other vocalists, mostly metal. Saying this to friends got me looks of, "Man, what's up with this chick?!?!?" But, YES! My brain works simultaneously right, and left, and I sing, or dance, through negative space in ways that others can't understand. I don't know how to explain hearing beats, and different notes, in my head to people who don't have any experience of a "head voice". There is an anticipation of what should naturally come next. When I first heard this song in 1984, I was happily disarmed by the direction this song took. So many metal songs are far more intricate than people expect, and its what keeps me hooked! Artists need to be THE performers they want to see/experience, and not be so hung up on pleasing the technophobes. Give the people what they don't know they need! 🤘💖

BTW - Keep in mind that his 1st 3 studio albums he his crazy belts in all of them like this. AND OH YEAH.. plenty of them LIVE that sound just like the studio. In fact. Several of their old songs in 80's just used live clips because why waste money in the studio when it sounds just as good 😱

Listen, if you are a person who sings or a singer, you understand how difficult it is to support these notes. There is a secret process. And Geoff doesn't give it to us, not that it is his job to. But, he has tapped into a process that allows singers to reach staggering emotional heights. Follow it.
