It means the engine is not warmed up yet. Don't run it hard until this blue light goes out which means it's warmed up if this light comes on in red that means your engine is overheating. Saved you 2 minutes.

And the burning question in everyone's mind... and in Nates mind as well, as he probably doesn't know why the Blue light is even there! Well, Glad you asked Nate! It's there to warm up the engine quickly so that the engine can maintain its high efficiency. Not only that, but engines tend to run much better when at "optimal" temperatures...So, not only is it less wear and tear on your engine as the oil will flow better when warm, but, better gas mileage as well! Bow down to the bluelight god!

General rule of thumb with idiot lights. Red - Urgent, take action immediately. Orange/Yellow - Caution, attention needed, warning (not critical), temp below 38 so roads may be slippery (not sure if all newer Subarus but I know on the Outback) Green/blue - Informational, headlights, high beams. Go Subaru!

A little side-note for CrossTrek drivers which may or may not apply depending on your model. In my 2016 CrossTrek - if that temperature light is blue, the cabin air fans (assuming you've set it to Auto) will stay on low speed until the engine reaches temperature. A nice feature that keeps you from getting a face full of cold air on a cold winter day.

Oh no you should worry. It is a stupid decision to take off temperature gauge because you don't know what is going on until RED flashes or what ever. If there were a gauge then you know before it is too late and take care of it before a major repair. BTW what is more important ... having a dinner plate size RPM gauge or a temp gauge ha? This is to rip off consumers with parts costs and mechanic costs ultimately benefit the dealer. On a different note most of the cars now have ton of plastics where it shouldn't have been in the first place in the engine compartment and easily breaks and ending up buying expensive parts unnecessarily. Every one rips off the consumers.

Cool, thanks!!! That blue light stayed on much longer than ever before last night, and I decided to cut short my drive because of it. It's beginning of winter where I am now, so now makes sense to me. And thank god you mentioned about the heating - because I just couldn't figure out why the heating wasn't coming on - the windows were fogging up a bit and I was getting worried. PHEW!! Great video! I purchased my very first vehicle back in November a 2019 Subaru crosstrek premium. I love everything about it, but HATE that the dash does NOT have a temperature engine gauge.😖 stressful not knowing the temp of the engine and regret purchasing knowing that this vehicle does not have that. Are Subaru’s known for heating up?

Gloria, sorry that you miss having a temperature gauge. The good news is that you still have this light that will let you know if something is out of the ordinary. If you don't see the light at all, it means that the temperature is normal. If that light comes on red, then you know it's hotter than it should be and you should pull over. Really the only difference is that you won't have an actual number for the temperature.

Good to know at what temperature does the blue light goes off. Below are oil pressure vs coolant temperature at 740rpm idling for my non Japanese car. 2barg at 172 F, 1.5barg at 190 F, 1.1barg at 195 F. Just upon car starting up oil pressure is not less than 3.5barg at 1000rpm even if coolant temperature is not below 80 F.

I have a 2011 Outback and can't see any coolant in the reservoir, so I carry a bottle of Zerex with me just in case. If it does overheat, which it hasn't yet, can't I just pour the coolant in and then I can drive again?

I think having an actual gauge could save the engine from over heating, but with a light. I think once you see that red light, that means your engine is done.

The light will go solid red when it is approaching a temperature that is too hot. Once it starts flashing is when your car will overheat. So you still have some warning.

For those of you with no car knowledge please know an important fact..... If you are in an accident(animal, car, any type) and are not sure if you should drive or not be cautious, be safe and call a tow truck. I had a client come to our collision shop for a bumper repair, but we did not repair the car...she destroyed the engine driving the car after hitting a raccoon. She thought that no light showing she could drive it, WRONG! Very Wrong! Even if no light come on the dash please do not drive! The engine coolant/antifreeze passes over a sensor. If that sensor has no fluid passing it then it has nothing to read so it won’t tell you the engine is hot!!! All the fluid leaked out so of course the temperature sensor had nothing to read and tell the driver that she was frying the engine!

To all, you already know there is nothing to worry just by the color. You need to worry about orange ( you may still driving) and red ( immediate stop, airbag light excluded!) lights. Blue and green lights are just for information and that's all. Blue and green lights example: headlamps, cruise control, low engine temperature, fog lights etc. etc. That's a universal thing. How you may dare driving a car or even having your driving license without knowing that extremely basic common sense thing is completely beyond my umderstanding. And that's not just about cars. You stop at the red light and pass on the green, don't you????

Well if you care about your subaru or another car with this or even normal temp gauge, Then you should not be driving at all until the light is off or at normal temp specially if its a turbo model car. Unless its emergency like literally medical emergency. If able car should always be at or close to normal operating temp before driving off. (left to HIGH idle on the cold start ECU cycle, start without touching gas) -------------------Many Reasons---------------------- - Fuel usage on idle is no concern 2.0L idling 10 mins on that fuel used might drive 150-200 meters with very light throttle use. - Actually Driving with a cold engine on its "Cold Start ECU Cycle" will actually use much more fuel and leave deposits all over engine from soot. - Driving with Cold Cat Converters means they aint working and creating more pollution (far more than idling for 5-10mins). - Washing the bores & diluting the oil is not really a concern with fuel injected cars as correct mixture most is burnt. - Turbo Cars CANNOT (or should not) Use any boost until oil is at least 90*C.

Hi I recently purchased a 2019 Impreza and I noticed the engine is way to noisy compared to other cars I have had (Scion, Hyundai, Chevy) also after I stop the cars it keeps making these tickling noises like loose metals from the engine. Boxer engines are louder and have a different sound than normal shaped v or u shaped motors from the brands you just listed...and trust me Subarus are so sensitive with sensors and alarms and codes that you would know something is up with it if it was wrong even the slightest error and it's gonna light up those lights on the dash.

On a 2015 you should actually have a temperature gauge on the dashboard so there's no need for the light. That's why it's not there. You'll still get a warning light if it's too hot though.
