Canyon get flooded quite frequently during rain time. Usually rain falls far up the creek and can carry huge logs/trees or rocks all the way down. That's why the possibility of a log somewhere in the canyon, even tho there are no trees around, is quite high. But in the end this is still Bear Grylls, and he is only showing us which techniques could be usefull in a survival situation, therefore I can understand that the production team used a precut tree just to save time and time = money

Ok I watch some survival shows and one thing I noticed is that the things and or resources that they needed at that specific time show up out of no where. A perfectly shaped log way up on that hill just sitting there also with no signs of aging. The way he said it we will need something like that old log over there. Which just so happens to be at a spot he needed it to be.
