A beautiful story. An incredible adventure. A worthwhile questioning. These two have done a remarkable job in telling this story. I've just finished Kevin Fedarko's "A Walk in the Park", commemorating this adventure in supremely eloquent prose. I will put it on my bookshelf next to "On the Loose".

I was a Park Ranger for 25yrs at another park on a wilderness island until forced to retire at age 57. Since then I've covered the west in a modified jeep that I sleep in, trying to see the other parks that I missed in my career. Three times I've visited the Grand Canyon and 3 times I've been disappointed. The crowds, the parking lot's, the shuffling busses, the long lines, the frayed nerves. I've tried to get to the south rim twice but it's been closed. Not sure I'll ever get to see THIS Grand Canyon, but I'd sure hate to think that they would let the whole thing degenerate into the theme park experience that I've had on my 3 trips. I may have to console myself with the knowledge that this view of the canyon still exist even though I may never get to see it myself. But who knows? I'm 62 now and still in pretty good shape, but" someday" will have to come soon.

This brings back memories from when I did my Rim to Rim a few years back :) Can't imagine how does it feel to go for 800 miles. Heck, I wasn't even aware you can hike as much down in the Canyon. There's only 30-40 miles top from North Rim to South Rim.

When we started this walk... a friend told us we'd "learn the difference between what we want, and what we need." 1:35. Amen. Everyone needs to learn this, and so do I. Gracias, amigos!

Interestingly my cousin (Ray) and I (Bruce, Canadian Park Warden) did NPS Little Colorado to Bright Angle in 1986. We (Ray, Bruce, and Steven) returned in 1996 entering Tanner to Little Colorado then west to Apache Peak (30 days) with native permission into Supi via side canyon. Many side trips into secondary canyons. Two food cache [Bright Angle and Bass (with water cache at Bass)]...no water sources for 5 days... 4-page Backcountry Use Permit. ...Supi to the rim...I was the only one who stayed in the canyon for the full time...Ray had to come out in the first leg for dental, and Steven, blow a boot in Cremation Basin and came out out Bright Angle. ...with pre-arranged pick up. But to Lee's Ferry to Reservoir...incredible......

Also, Edward Abbey said that these places (Grand Canyon, The Arches etc.) do not have silence, they have stillness.

I have just finished re-reading Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. He predicted all this.

The series is very well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching first the movie and now the talk, but it's amazing how ill-prepared you guys were for the hike. The majority of the work lies in getting prepared and in the preparedness. Blisters, running out of salt from dehydration - come on! Those are absolute no-no's. Did you guys even research the hike ? Also, the way to get rid of cacti easily (although not entirely painlessly), is to bring a small comb along, wedge it, and then yank it off, like ripping a bandaid. I must confess I haven't done a month long back-packing trip yet, so I am in no way close to an expert, but when I do my hikes, I spend enormous amounts of time and energy reading up - you know - Nat Geo books :)

Did my first full-length through hike a few months ago. To those who are distance type of people, it's not that bad. Some minor repelling, yes; but aside from that it's just a back country long haul. Obviously water is the key factor, but if you do your research (like most if not everyone who does this does) water won't be as hard to find as they project. It's a bit dramatic in some scenes but hey, they're city boys.
