When a jaguar pounces, sometimes one bite is all it takes to get a meal. National Geographic has exclusive video of a jaguar taking down a caiman in Brazil's Pantanal wetlands, photos of which went viral earlier this month. Luke Dollar, a conservation scientist who helps manage National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative, explains the hunt and explosive moment of predation.

I would say this Caiman's less than 100-120lbs. Jaguar males are about 170lbs on average, unless this is an above-average male (reaching 210lbs and above). At 1:35, you can clearly see the the size difference of their bodies. Excluding the tail, which only comprises 20% of a Crocodilian's weight..

We learn from questioning... BUT you are wrong.. look it up. There was only one report out of 10 that had the tiger stronger. Jaguar has the 4th strongest bite force in this animal kingdom., ~1350-2000psi. It is because of the special arrangements of its jaw muscles that is different from the other 'weaker' cats. Tiger is only under 1000psi and a hyena has a stronger bite.

I like how this video starkly shows the evolutionary advantage of being warm blooded - the cayman were sunning themselves on that sandbar to gain enough energy to be able to move and hunt later on in the day, making them highly vulnerable; the jaguar on the other hand is ready to go anytime, anywhere.

@KevinMartinez-
@KevinMartinez- Ай бұрын
Haha, You're very misinformed. You should invest, research and gain knowledge on Jaguars, (when you have the time to spare) since you have no or very little knowledge about them. Do not take my comment personally as offensive, a majority of animal casual watchers or spectators underestimate, doubt, or belittle Jaguars. Actually, Jaguars from different regions hunt Crocodiles. Jaguars have evolved over the last thousands of years specifically hunting Crocodilians. Jaguars are expert reptile hunters. You better be specific in terms of sizes of Adult Saltwater Crocodiles, since any size adult could mean 14 - 16 Feet to 18 - 20 Feet. Not all Saltwater Adult Crocodiles reach the same lengths and one is smaller than the other and some do not reach 16 Feet throughout their entire lives. If a Saltwater Crocodile is less than 15 Feet than No, the big 300 Pound/134 Kilogram to 340 to 350 Plus Pound/154-158 Kilogram Jaguars from Llanos Venezuela/Hato La Aurora, Llanos Colombia to the Pantanal of Brazil would cave any 15 Feet or lower Saltwater Crocodiles skull in like canoe. There is something you should know since a majority of casual animal spectators have zero to very little knowledge on animals especially Saltwater Crocodiles. Saltwater Crocodiles have the weakest Osteoderms, ( reptiles/crocodile "armor") out the majority of Crocodilian Species. Their armor is quite weak. Look it up. Ask any Animal Biologist/Crocodilian Specialist/Saltwater Crocodile Specialist, especially from Australian Saltwater Crocodile Specialist and they will tell you the exact information I wrote to you. Now, there are 6 reports (actually 7 plus more) of Jaguars who successfully hunted and killed Crocodiles. 4 Morelet Crocodiles in Mexico and 2 American Crocodiles in Costa Rica. A Animal Biologist/Crocodilian Specialist from Belize, (by the name of Marisa Tellez) replied by identifying from a Morelet Crocodile Carcass, the bite marks were inflicted by a Jaguar, when she was replying to someone on Twitter. Plus one of my Jaguar KZbin channels I am subscribed to wrote to me mentioning Onçafari Project Research documenting a case about a 3.5 Meter/11.5 Feet Orinoco Crocodile was killed by a large Male Jaguar by the name of Miguel in Venezuela. There is another report documented on a 12.5 - 15 Feet/3.8 - 4.5 Meter Black Caiman, was successfully predated by a large Male Jaguar. There are more Jaguar cases on predation on Crocodiles that have Not been published to the public.

Amazing! One correction though, the Tiger is also a big cat with aquatic abilities, taking down crocs! Jaguars and Tigers are the only big cat species capable of hunting and killing big reptiles like crocs and caimans, on land that is... This fact doesn't take anything away from the Jaguar's abilities that are phenomenal, with the strongest bite force of all big cats!

Love your enthusiasm and passion! However once you’ve actively observed almost all of these apex predators in the wild, you’d be amazed at how much you thought you knew and how little you genuinely understood. There is no denying a tigers size and power, absolutely no dispute there, the largest and bulkiest of the panthera genus, they are the embodiment of apex predator. That said, I and many others in the field believe Jaguars could absolutely give both the Lion and Tiger and good run for their money. Jaguars are essentially robust, muscled machines, pound for pound the strongest with an incredible ability to crush skulls rather than the spine or jugular. Incredibly underrated cats. I strongly urge you to book yourself some travel someday and find good genuine sources to learn more from (not blogs or internet articles).

Ben Culture Yeah, that's pretty much classic "house cat" for you. When I used to let my previous cats out, one of them would stare at birds, and make weird little "meh"-ing sounds, but he was too fat and not hungry enough to actually make the leap and catch one. Now I've got an indoor cat who vomits immediately after eating. Yet he's still obese, so obviously he's not starving to death.

Jaggar Ham That's funny, it fits with the concept that cats meow in an attempt to imitate a human baby, which is why cats in the wild don't meow. But two of my cats were born in my apartment and have almost-never been anywhere else; they've certainly never met a human baby. So how do they know what they (think they) are doing?

GREAT narration for this beautiful powerful cat. Jaguars have been a favorite animal of mine for study, and a big part of it is their muscularity and somewhat forgotten status. Not nearly as big as the largest cats on earth, but pound for pound… they are extremely entertaining hunters. They look like leopards took a slight round of steroids and developed some weird morph of their spots.
