Muay Thai Chaiya Kicks
Learn the Yat Khao (knee), Chat (front kick) and wiang kaeng (turning shin kick) of Muay Thai Chaiya.
Filmed at Baan Chang Thai in Bangkok, I'll take you through these kicking techniques, and give you tips on training and practice, so you make a good start at home.
This is part two of two, so if you haven't seen part one, what are you waiting for?
Thanks to Ajarn Lek, Kru Aof and Kru Yee at Baan Chang Thai for their generous helping with the filming.
For those of you who want to continue learning from home, I've just setup my new website www.LearnMuayChaiya.com, which has lots more videos for you to learn at home from. Also the ability to upload the videos of you training so that I can give you pointers, hints, tips and make sure you're learning is going along the right lines!

You are a great teacher, and it's great to see an English fluent speaker break the barrier of Westerners learning the Thai arts. I look forward to any other posts in the future. "Don't smoke"!

You're welcome. We don't really do anything special at Baan Chang Thai for conditioning, just kick the bags a lot (which are pretty hard/heavy) and spar a lot without shin guards. the latter is the most important in my mind. As it teaches you how to protect against damage, how to take it, and also deliver it...

Good observation :) The theory is (obviously harder in practice) is to kick from the Tha Kru with your feet at 45deg inwards as it reduces telegraphing your kick to your opponent. Looking at the video, Aof is taking a small step on launching the kick, his front foot pointing more outwards. This would be useful if you are in movement already, stepping towards your attack, it has however, the disadvantage of exposing the inside of your knee to your opponent for a fraction of time.

what about bull rushes? is there a quick way to recover from losing your balance while kicking?

@nathanbrown19 ok thanks for the answer. in regular MT its like front of the shin but preferebly going a bit in the inside so i was wondering if it was the same . do you think that the stepping and all the (footwok) in the previous videos could be good for regular muay-thai or its to differant and it would hurt it? take care, later

Aim to kick with the shin, or at least the top part of the instep (make sure you tense the foot if you do this). It will feel strange, but it's the safest way to kick,especially when the opponent is good at checking kicks with their knees and elbows.

nice job , but i wana know something , when u demonstrate the horizontal kick ( the one which is more effective and harder to learn ) when u take ur kicking stands, ur front leg faces 45 degree inwards and when u execute the kick with ur back leg ur front leg rotates from 45 degree inwards to outwards, but when ur partner kicks the bag his front leg is 45 degree outwards.... so should my front leg be 45 degree inwards or outwards when i am about to execute the kick with my back leg ?
@ShayanKhan-tw1nx
@ShayanKhan-tw1nx 10 жыл бұрын
thank u , i practice it 45 degree inwards even if i take a small step,because 45 degree outside cuts the power, the kick is damn strong ! i think i understood the theory, the kicking leg acts as a stick and rotating the full body acts like a arm swinging, well i hope so .. sir could u tell me how do i make my shin harder

hey there, is tjhere a reason he keeps his leg not fully extended? Usually once you impact on a thai kick you extend the leg but im noticing youu dont, wouldnt that make this kick slower and weaker? really interesting stuff though!

Good question. The power generation in MC is different from most marital arts, especially in kicks. We use the weight of the body (and speed) rather than the torque/twist of other styles. The bent leg is largely for protection, if you straighten it, you increase the chance of it being damaged (it's one tactic we use against straight legs/arms, so we don't want to suffer the same tactic) So: lose speed? No Lose power? No Risk damage? Less than normal lol A difficult kick to master? Yes

@@nathanbrown19 awesome, your site doesnt seem to be up? Im super interested in implementing some of this stuff to my mma/ muay thai training. Ive been digging your stuff, pedro solans, and boran academy

Also, what is the counter you guys use that makes you bend the leg? is that a video or on a site?

Hey there, so the front kick is more of a snap kick that a sport Muay Thai teep? Kinda similar to a karate front (obviously not exactly)
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 3 жыл бұрын
Similar in the 'snap' part yes. However there isn't the thrust that is in the karate snap kick. The main difference from sport Muay Thai is also the thrust. By pushing/thrusting you give your leg to the opponent for longer, which is inherently risky. The method of power generation in MC is pretty unique as far as I know.

Nathan Brown and the power generated is from the lean of the top half of the teachers position no? Sorry I’m literally trying to figure this stuff out on KZbin lol. I go to an mma, Muay Thai bjj academy and am trying to implement some of this and the Chaiya round in my sparring.

@@ramseymodiri2752 yep, I call it the 'body rock' and it's used in several of the fundamental techniques in the style. (Including the yat khao knee)

Yes, I'm a softy compared to the guys back in the day. Remember, those guys fought to survive, and the longer you can last in a fight without getting damaged the better. Kru Lek's elbows are like rock. He continually conditions them - and can no longer fully straighten his arms. He told me of some fighters who also conditioned their toes, so they could use them to penetrate on kicks.

stupid kick.. you're facing your face away.. in a fight, if you turn your face away, your opponent can do alot of things to you without you knowing what is going on.. like catching your kick and sweeping?
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 8 жыл бұрын
lol, you're not the first to think that. it's easy to comment on a small part of a style without understanding how it works as a whole.

i train muay thai.. and i think muay chaiya's hand defense is nice.. but this kick is stupid.. really.. turning your head away especially 180 degrees away is a stupid and cowardly move to me.. even a spinning back kick will require the person to at least face their opponent at least from a side on angle..
@nathanbrown19
@nathanbrown19 8 жыл бұрын
+CombatFitness again, you're taking about something you haven't tried. there are actually more weaknesses in the sport muay Thai kick than the muay chaiya kick.
@combatfitness7092
@combatfitness7092 8 жыл бұрын
Nathan Brown i doubt so.. your face is facing the opposite direction.. you cant even see what is going on.. so basically if the person evades your kick you cant even know.. so he waits for you to spin around in a circle before attacking you again.. or he catches your kick and you probably need to face him again to do something, so has the upper hand.. i know enough about fighting to know that you cant turn your face away when striking or else you cant see what is going on..
