Honestly it's time to give this sound another chance, and I think it's ripe for a revival. The fact that alternative dance, jungle, nu disco, and baggy music is all coming back in a post-vaporwave world is a perfect stage for a return. A genre that pushed music production to new heights infused with modern drums, synths, and sampling would be a match made in heaven imo.

new jack swing definitely continued to live on in the mainstream after this is how we do it! there's some later mj songs like blood on the dance floor. it was also the basis for the "funky" pop of the late '90s, usually by white artists or mostly-white groups - spice girls, britney spears, backstreet boys, and others' songs used a very slowed down new jack wing...i'd say it disappeared completely only by '03 or '04. it lasted even longer in south korea.

Why did new Jack swing died in the mid 1990s?
@DaWalk2 жыл бұрын
Other sub-genres came along, including gangsta rap, G-funk, grunge, and the sub-genre that followed new jack: hip-hop soul. New jack was left facing off against the others and couldn't compete. Also, supposedly there were too many, other acts cribbing from songs by Bell Biv Devoe and Guy, but I don't think there were that many imitators. I'd say there were only, like, a few acts that trying imitating them, such as Basic Black, who were an imitation of Guy.

There are some less renowned new jack swing acts of the 21st century who are underground like Derric Gobourne Jr., Vadell Gabriel, D.B. Swang, and Cry Baby carrying on the tradition and have revived it. But now if only there were more like them who are more consistent with the music. Several others I came across either only made the odd new jack track different from the music they commonly make and perform or the new jack remix that's the same situation. I mean, I like those others too, who are like that and they're nice, but I'd still like to see even more recent, less famous acts who are limited to new jack swing and urban slow jams as well.

Your insight is incorrect and way off. Drake, The Weeknd, Chris Brown are still doing the same thing. Mixing hip hop and rnb with pop sensibility. All New Jack Swing is, is a hybrid sound. The person who coined the corny ass term was an old black journalist who saw black music in silos ( funk, soul, quiet storm). It was the first time different black sounds were being mixed. No Diggity ( '96) is the same thing as Say my name by Destiny's Child ( '98) or crazy in love ( 03) which is faster paced than No Diggity even though it was released in the 2000's. The video should be retitled "The History of the Hybrid Sound". You are not gonna find a black male crossover act today who sounds like Babyface or Luther Vandross. Straight Rnb is the real relic of the past and has been dead on pop/black radio since the late 90's.
@NQuiz522 жыл бұрын
This documentary is kinda misleading. Only Teddy Riley can produce New Jack Swing. All those other songs were poor attempts to copy him and that's why they all suck. All, except for Jimmy and Terry. They were doing something else.
@FlyAwayChi2 жыл бұрын
So LA Reid and Babyface sucked? You sound crazy as hell smh

@@FlyAwayChi I didn't mention La & Babyface, but by omitting them you assume I include them with those who suck. More specifically I was talking about Basic Black, R Kelly & the Public Announcement and everybody else who tried to copy the guy sound. There was so many at the time that I can't even remember them all now. Babyface, Jimmy & Terry, and Teddy Riley were the sound of the 80s and 90s. @NQuiz52 Жыл бұрын
@@mauricesantinomf That is completely false! There was no mention of New Jack Swing until Teddy Riley! It was actually named by the same guy who created the New Jack City. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lews, as well as La Ried & Baby Face, were making hit records long before Teddy Riley. When he came in and immediately dominated with his Keith Sweat, Guy, Bobby Brown, and Heavy D. productions, he was the New Jack! His sound was a blend of multiple genres and it was so effective that everyone prior started to try and emulate his sound. The kind of music made by other's before Teddy was not and is not considered New Jack Swing.
