The honesty is 100% welcome. I bought a borderline neglected n54 335i and I’ve spent almost $8000 in parts to get it to 100%. Love it to death, but people need to be aware of what they are getting in to.

I'm about 30% done watching this. I have this amazing machine (in my 2007 e64 M6). I've owned it 2 years and so far it has been a great machine. I've put a lot work into it doing preventative maintenance. It was a 1 owner warm climate car. The only issue I've had thus far was a bad coil. I replaced all coils and plugs. I did have my bearings, vanos line, water pump, and a host of other things done that I felt were beyond my garage mechanic capabilities. I also installed Eisenmann Race Exhaust. I SO appreciate this video as it's such a great breakdown of the motor's various components, how they come off, etc... So valuable! My next project was to do the actuators and probably injectors. I was a bit apprehensive given that plenum removal/reinstall, but I think I'll be ok after watching several videos. Your video is the first video where i've seen the actuators come out and taken apart - thank you! The other issue I worry about is the SMG pump and various components.. So far so good. I'm hopeful it hangs on for me. I did have to replace my DSC pump which was a BITCH of an expense. It came from Germany and supposedly they're in very short supply. I love this car though, and this motor. Always have. I believe the right specimens will be collectables soon enough - especially ones that have been loved and cared for, like mine. I've enjoyed working on it so far! I have convinced myself I need a lift. ;). Anyway, thanks for the video! I will be finishing it up later for sure!

Those shiny spots on the piston are where the excess play in the rod bearing is allowing the piston to hit the head face
@jamest5149

The head gaskets are OEM Also the clean crowns on the one piston and matching head is from the rod bearing wear allowing the piston to hit the head… the squish clearance is really tight on these engines.

I'm surprised how much varnish there was, usually with full synthetic oil it stays nice and clean unless they went too long between oil changes. Pretty neat setup with just the one chain and two straight cut gears on the cams....I'm used to Ford's with multiple chains, too many chains lol

The level of varnish looks a little dark but I wouldn't consider by just looking at the colour that the V10 has been poorly serviced. My V8 runs 5W30 and has oil changes between the scheduled logbook services using synthetic oil and that honey colouring is still present but lighter than the V10.

@@jeffthejinjer Due to PCV design some engines are going to varnish even running synthetic especially at extended intervals.

Glad you are honest about the brand, some people can’t handle the truth. With BMWs I have come to learn if you cannot wrench on the car, labor alone will eat you alive. Parts on certain models, is just like any other car. Also, it’s not a Chevy, when there’s a leak or a little problem that on most engines wouldn’t be an issue, better fix it, cause it will cause more issues very quickly. Maintaining a BMW is key, and when you notice an issue fix it right away, and don’t cheap out.

Agreed. I have seen to many times people get their injectors cleaned professionally only for them to leak and have problems with them. Just bite the bullet and buy new ones. Save time and hassle of having to pull them out a second time.

People need to know the pluses and minuses of any brand. Being a BMW fan means spending money on repairs. Significantly more money than certain other brands. That’s just a fact that one must come to terms with before they dive in.

If you watch any S85 strip down video’s on youtube they all act surprised at the lack of tension on the head bolts… it is just how they are and not a ‘fault’ or issue 👍

I’d use electric ratchet on the spark plugs after breaking them loose, or on some other items more delicate then wheel bolts, not the impact

These S85 engines when torn down should be like new inside, no sludge. The sludge shows long oil change intervals and is one of the main reasons the bearings pick up and spin… the top rod bearing wear is fairly normal for the mileage but the oil was old and could not keep the oil wedge keeping the metal parts apart… made worse by not warming the engine up to full operating temperature including the oil temp and just beating on it.
@HAHAHAV10

Hi Nathan, I also have an E60 M5. Did bearings, maintenance on it and always warmed it up before ripping on it. Drove it 30k miles. Did the injectors preventively with new ones from FCP. A month later the #10 piston detonated and the ring land broke. There's also a hole in #10 piston. I think I had a faulty new injector. However, I'm thinking about going stroker. New crank, rods and pistons. Since cyl #10 bore is scored, I was also thinking about sleeving and rebuilding back to stock.. Still on the fence about how to rebuild it. I was even thinking of going forged rods and forged MAHLE 4032 pistons in a replacement block. In your case, seems like the metal shavings from the bearings stopped up all 4 vanos solenoids causing the rough running. Very common when the bearings wear out and copper gets into the oil.

Interested in seeing the turnout. I bought an 06 M5 about a month ago with a rod knock and I’m debating whether or not to go this route or buy a replacement engine and do rod bearing service. I was told that these crankshafts are not machinable but here I’ve found some hope.

I was working on the S85 engine and doing the rod bearings job. I started the tear-down process about a year ago but became busy with life and did not have much time, but now I'm ready to continue working on the S85. I have already completed the bearing for cylinders 3, 5, 9, and 10. I was going to rotate the engine "clockwise," and it would not move. I am using the BMW crankshaft adaptor, thinking that would help, but it did not change anything. I have bought some fogging oil, thinking the cylinders might be dry since the car sat for a year, but could it be anything else? Any other ideas to check? I did not have any issues with the replacements of the rad bearings, and I followed the TIS. Thoughts?

From the looks of it that engine was severely neglected. If I owned a car that nice the engine would be super clean. That one is filthy. I owned an ‘88 E30 M-3. I bought it in ‘94 and it looked brand new when I sold it in 2000 with 167,000 miles on it. Best sports car I’ve ever owned and I really regret selling it. They’re worth a fortune today! Having just found your channel,what is the purpose of buying these cars? Buy it,fix it,and flip it? You are obviously not a collector.
