My 99 e38 has 223,000 miles and has given me very little trouble over the past 20 years aside from replacing the timing chain guide at 170,000 miles. I never planned to keep it as long as I have but it is still a lot of fun to drive and has proven to be incredibly durable. I know someone else with an e38 who has had a similar experience with his.

An E38 what? There was a half dozen of them, all with their own issues. I am an ex E38 740il owner (et al BMW's) and I would advise against the car and the brand in general. Then you have to take it to a dealer and that's when not just poor craftsmanship but down right criminality comes into play.

My 97 540i I bought as a personal car - put on the 2001 lights and rims and about 1k of Rock Auto parts - bought for $800 with a new expansion tank and the chain guides already done - no coolant or oil loss, cat delete, resonator delete, stock scuba tank exhaust it is a wildly stout and gorgeous V8 highway star. M62 no vanos - 212,000 miles.

What not to buy as an investment car, agree. As a daily driver to have fun with some of them should stay on the list like the E39 and E38 540i. I've just done the chains on the M62TU and it's not really that bad, albeit time-consuming.

Pretty sure the statements made are more focused on acquisition price + maintenance + realistic flip price more than anything. For a period, e38 e39 cars could be picked up for next to nothing, now an e39 with pulled studs is getting listed 2k or north. Not to mention multiple interior parts are no longer being manufactured, and they are old enough that much of the plastic has become saltine cracker brittle. Still great cars if you’re not looking at the money though 🤷♂️

Have to agree with you here. The E39s as a whole are some of the best 90s - early 00s Bimmers out there. I think he is talking more-so from the point of view of appreciation vs depreciation. Either way, I still agree with you. E39s nation-wide are increasing in value. So not sure where the depreciation comes from. I'm seeing E39 540s sell for upwards of 6k in good shape. Hell, my E39 528i ran me 4k with only 110k miles. You used to be able to snag an E39 528i for around 2500. Granted, the E39 528i didn't make his list, but it's still an E39 chassis and they are very coveted. Either or, everyone had their opinion. Still a great and knowledgeable video nonetheless. Immaculate except for a very small dent on the bottom of the trunk lid. It had 54395 miles on it. Always garage kept. Tires a little weak. Interior is perfect. I paid $1,000 for it. I bought tires ($600) and new front brake pads ($38). The trunk will cost $300 to repair by an excellent body shop here. So all told, I am in it for under $2k. It's really a gorgeous car. I gotta say I disagree about the M62TU. I owned an E38 sporty shorty with 250k miles on it and it ran perfectly. The guides were done and the car still ran great. The only reason I got rid of it was because the catalytic converter went bad but that’s not an engine issue. My sister’s current car, an E38 sporty shorty as well, has 321k miles on it and it’s still going strong. Again, guides were done and it runs beautifully. Finally my uncle’s car is an E39 540i with 250k miles on it as well. It still runs great and also had the guides replaced. My dad has been a BMW master tech for over 15 years and he replaced the guides on all of these cars plus a bunch more. Are you sure you are installing them properly? Also if I sounded condescending or mean in this comment I didn’t mean it in that way, I’m just confused as to how the car doesn’t run properly after the guides are replaced.

Great video, thanks for posting! So being the proud owner of an E39 540i, E60 M5, E53 X5 4.8is and F30 328i, would like to share some "un-triggered" feedback. For the E39 540i, I do slightly disagree with you. You are absolutely right about the timing chain guides and there is even the problem of the VANOS seals failing with a difficult and expensive repair. BUT, Assuming you have an M Sport version with a 6-speed manual (as I do), I think the value will go up. We have seen the values skyrocket on the E39 M5. This is the "poor man's" M5 which shares a fair amount of excitement with its parent car. The sought-after E39 body style, a powerful and very torquey engine, the same 6-speed as the M5, the incredible handling of the sport suspension, and the timeless BMW interior. As long as you can replace the timing chain guides, the motor is fine. I have 114K on it and did change the upper timing chain guides and rebuilt the VANOS units myself. It runs superbly and has not had any issues. And for the E53 X5 4.8is, I agree it will go up in value. BMW created the sport SAV market with this car and the 4.8is version with its huge 20" staggered wheels just looks incredible. Mine still looks new and I get a lot of good comments on it. The engine has a lot of power and the stock exhaust note is amazing :). And everyone cries about the air suspension on it. I have had all the air struts fail on it, but they are not to difficult to replace. since replacing the struts/airbags, I have not had a single problem with it for years.

Why not the 2011-12 E9x 335i with the N55? I might be a little biased as an owner of a 2011 e90 335ix. But once you get over the “mod for mod” line and realize that the cost of ownership for the N55 is going to be much less than the N54 and the car will drive and look identical.... and it’s not like you are stuck if you want to mod for 600+ HP. You just aren’t going to do that on the stock N55 turbo.

When you consider buying an E39, either with the 530i or the M5 (also interesting in countries where diesel is more common: 530d). If you want to have something even more collectable try to find an Alpina B10 V8S.

Hah, I watched this video just after buying a rust free high mileage 97 e38 728i. It might be the older model but the bulletproof I reliability of the non TU m52 just speaks to me. The only problem i have on this car is a slow leak on the rear main seal and broken bmw shitty plastics everywhere.

Hi Nathan, have a great idea in my opinion about a new direction for the channel which might help save old beamers and bring a new flavor to the channel. How about a series on LS swapping an M62TU vehicle?

Prices for well-maintained, "last model" E38 and E39 8 cyl cars have gone through the roof in recent yrs. The enthusiast community vehemently disagrees with you. We don't care what they cost to maintain to a point -- they're the best BMWs of all time.

What about a $1000 x5 3.0 that you just want a cheep shit getter for work when you don’t need the truck and the seller couldn’t figure out why it was misfiring, so you go there and unplug and plug back in the coils one by one till you find the one that has no change, so you buy it, bust out a new coil pack, install it and drive it away 😂

I wonder if the early E46 subframe issue has to do with the manuals being harder on the left rear subframe mount when power and high rpm shifting is applied. Every time I go on CL or Facebook marketplace, its very hard to find a 99-2000 323i/328i for sale I'm guessing from the subframe issue. I love my 2002 325i automatic facelift sedan, has 111k miles. I've done the cooling system at 100k miles, vacuum lines, suspension, 5k oil changes and tires. Never burns a drop of oil or has never had subframe issues. I think it depends how you care for the car. Good ownership I think is key to own a E46 that lasts for a long time.

@@davidj4662 I guess, I daily mine and put 4,900-5,200 miles in a year. She loves to be driven versus sitting. I've never had issues with the rear end. I think its an internet blown over issue because I see more higher mileage E46 without the rear subframe issue. My friend who works on BMWs since the 80s has over 200k miles on his 2002 330i and its a manual. Same year as my 325i as well.

@@corkscrewlifestyle I found a small hairline crack by my rear left subframe bushing mount on my 2002 e46 m3. I really had to scrape the area and clean it to find it. It was just starting though. Got it reinforced with tms plates by a reputable bmw/Porsche race shop near me.. Did the rtabs and subframe bushings while they were in there. Plus had them do a valve adjustment and check the vanos components
@corkscrewlifestyle4 жыл бұрын
@@caesarguzman5831 Ouch, I'm guessing its a manual or a SMG which has harder shifts on the rear mounts. My dads friend who works on BMWs had that happen on his manual 2000 323i sedan. Busted out at 200k miles. Thats awesome you got it fixed.
@timboyle31144 жыл бұрын
You could well be right! I busted the frame out of my 99 328 manual around 100k - Was repaired by BMW under a lawsuit settlement. Was under there around 180k rebuilding the rear suspension and had the subframe down to get at some the suspension bolts - could find no evidence of further issues. - Plenty of other issues on the car, - which is not surprising really for a 20+ Y/O car. Do love the M52tu on a manual - Maybe less power than 330 - but no oil burning!!!!

I was shocking surprised Nathan that my E60 535xi was not mentioned…. That being said I’m kinda curious on your opinion of said model. Specifically mine is an 08, I just hit 161 k and I of course do regular maintenance on Lucille on top of having replaced and or upgraded many parts. My next big things are replacing the turbos (N54 Platform) along w the oil lines and all plumbing to replacing the intercooler. Love the channel and great video I’m sure you’ve got some people in an uproar! Lol

Regarding the E39 it is interesting to see the perception in the US versus Europe. In Europe we have had generally smaller engines yet the asking price when new was higher than the in the US. But in Europe regardless of the less powerful engines they had to be able to cruse at speeds over 120Mph on a daily base (in the German home market). A lot of people I know here in Europe who drive BMWs are convinced that not all BMWs are born equally and those sold in markets where they will be required to cruse at high speeds are build better.

Idk man, 3rd owner of a well kept 98 e38 740il, its to the point where its still a wonderful reliable car but is just getting wear from age. This is pre vanos and post engine nikoli material or whatever, love this thing and plan to get it to 500,000. Currently at 197,00 and Had the timing guides changed a year ago and the mechanic told me i could have actually kept them for how well they looked. If taken care of, this bmw is reliable but in the wrong hands id put it on your list forsure. Sad to see a fellow e38 in the junkyard :(

I'm trying to decide if your broad-brush statements are more of a disservice to the viewer, or to the cars of which you speak. Specific to the M62 (both B44 and TUB44), these are fantastic motors so long as they are serviced properly. Additionally, the things BMW got wrong (cooling system, VANOS) have been solved. Your information isn't information - its your opinion....says a man that's been driving his 740i for 19 years and 224K miles.

Is it just me, or is the entire used car market out of whack right now. IMO might have to do with limited new car supplies due to Corona putting pressure on market supply even in the used market. Then with stimulus checks demand stayed up or flat. Wondering if more people will hit a financial wall (unemployment or months of lowered income) by this winter, and bring it back down. Most cars seem to be selling for more than they were 6 months ago. We bought a 14 Avalon for $13k from a dealer last fall. Good deal but not a crazy steal. Now it is book valued at around $18k for dealer retail. Did a Carmax quote for fun. They offered more than what we paid for the car 9 months ago. That’s not normal. Seems to be the story for most of the market. And hear stories of people selling/trading their cars for what seems to be crazy values. IMO it’s a good time to not buy (if it’s not absolutely necessary) or you might get burned if pricing comes back down to “normal.” Unless you find what would have been a good deal last year. But then again, who knows what normal will be going forward.
