ALWAYS go with an E53 with the 3.0 straight six and rear coil springs. Those 4.6 and 4.8s are a financial tapeworm if they're over 100,000 miles

@@bengrizzlyadams6187 post 100+ miles the valve stem seals and timing chain guides require replacement in which together can add up to 5-6K to have done. Both are very invasive and the stem seals require special tools. At that mileage no doubt those had to have been done. You might be have a worthwhile (moneywise) X5 V-8 there.

@@chrism1236Just bought it, ;)) it's an inline 6, with lpg on a hatge custom bodywork, all black, I had that same engine it in my 528, 330 and 530 and I love it. Drives like new. I had the v8 in a 745 but the zf gearbox went first, while I had just tuned the engine properly on the autobahn... it did smoke white when idle otherwise it was a bomb. And the harder I drove it the better it went.

Yep i had a 4.8 is tranny problem bought a 2002 e53 3.0 for about $1900 put about $2500 hundred used low mile transfer case now i tow my trailer and use her as my work truck last part was a speed sensor Busch because after market for 30 bucks on ebay was a waste of money now that was the best investment ever

I have 4.8is for 5 years now and completely satisfied. yes it takes money to maintain but when you do it properly it WILL be reliable. I scan it every couple of months and I address the problem before it becomes something bigger. Have in mind this car was 130K Eur when new. So if I put $10K in it to run 200K kms i am still satisfied. You expect to run this car on $100 per year and than you talk trash about it. Vital parts you should buy OEM from BMW and others from ebay, mount what ever you can by your self and you will be ok with this car. I am changing by my self oil, brakes, filters, alternator diodes, spark plugs, expansion tank, height sensor, paring sensor and other small items. After 5 years not a single engine, gearbox or air suspension problem. So if you want to buy it for 2K and not to invest more than 1K do not buy it. But if you buy a good one for 5-10K and invest 3-4K you WILL have a proper N/A V8 $130K SUV for cheap for next 5 or more years. Even if you get a valve stem seal problem there are people doing that for $1K and you can buy AGA valve stem tool for $1K... so having in mind it was $130K new than it IS good to have a good one for $15K.

I own a 2001 BMX X5 4.4i DINAN tuned with sport package. I have the M Manual shifter as well and it currently has over 205,000 miles on it. It is a BEAST and i LOVE IT! Local Greer South Carolina man and I can tell you for a FACT that the 2000 to 2006 E53 X5 is the BEST BMW SAV EVER! Not SUV . We call it an SAV for Sport Activity Vehicle. So don't listen to all the BS out there. Wunderbare SAV!

This thing is a literal armored truck. We have an ‘06 and my mom was rammed from the side in parking lot. The car was so secure that my mom sustained no injuries and the window was completely intact. In fact, the other cars back window shattered. It did cause a leakage in the brake line fluid though. The car is great except for the fact that our 4.4 V8 gets horrible has mileage

2001 E39 Wagons (Tourings) have the compressors in the trunk, not underneath. The air spring system is very reliable, when the air springs go it is an easy DIY fix, about 45 mins per side to change them.

The M62 has chain guide issues, the N62 does not, pretty much. The N62 also has the intermediate lever problems. It does have valve seal problems like you said but a lot of times it's just a $10 pcv diaphragm causing oil to get into the intake.

For the record I have 252k original engine and trans, had to buy a new transfer case about $2200 from BMW, comes with a 2yr factory warranty which was worth it if you plan on keeping it. Front driveshaft ordered aftermarket for a fraction of what OE was, paid about $500 and about 700 in total labor to do the work by a good indy mechanic. Other than that still running original trans fluid and brake fluid no issues never changed them since they are sealed systems figured the rest of the car should fail before those parts do. Don't use a lead foot and trans will last lifetime. Replacing crank case ventilation parts next along with Crank and cam position sensors to keep things smooth. Dr Vanos has an upgraded rebuild kit for the Vanos system, haven't done it but thinking about it

I have 177k. New transmission, main seal, drivers side CV joint, expansion tank, valve cover gasket, new spark plugs, all filters, Oil 8.5 qrts, O2 sensor, water pump, thermostat, all belts, all brakes and rotors, rear suspension control arms, fuel filter, all fluids flush (engine block), two window regulators, battery, all lights bulbs, solder rear tail lights, new front tires, Diy $5,800. I expect another 75k for my 5,800 investment. Easy job except rear suspension (extra hand) and installing transmission shop charged 1,200 labor, Certified transmission cost 2,800 all included in $5,800 total cost, all inclusive. BMW. "Better than a Whore".

The E53 are aging well, but man those V8 engines are a nightmare. Mercedes makes a better V8 engine than BMW tbh. My friend from high school had a E38 740i he bought for $2k with the 4.4 V8. Right after three months of shenanigans, the timing chain started making timing rattle on cold starts at 166k miles. Those M62 V8 engines were fun to drive but what a timing chain nightmare.

I got one for ya. My 05 325i ( auto) misfires when ever I floor it and the passing kick down engages I have to pull over shut it off and start it back up and it’s gone. The SES light flash when it happens.

Drewcifer sounds like a catalytic converter issue. I had the same symptoms on my e38 and I put new cats in it and never had that issue again.

Let's not forget the dreaded mayonnaise issue with the 3.0 v6. Bigger issue in winter if car is driven short distance. Installed a catch can system in mine. Helps a lot. Need to drive on highway winter more.

@@reelpaddy condensation mixes with oil blow by. Common when not driven a lot or short city hops. Not necessarily a bad thing but if it freezes, watch out! Many people think their head gasket is going when in reality, it’s just this. Finally got rid of mine recently because I cannot drive it the way it needs to be driven as I work a mile from home and absolutely hate road trips. Only put 4000 miles on it in one year. Not good for it. Let someone else enjoy it.

v8 is around $600 for the deflection rail,chain guides and seals from the stealer. its a time consuming job, but can diy thanks to youtube videos. i picked up a e38 sport for cheap as the owner wasn't going to pay 4-5k for the repair. was well worth turning some wrenches in my driveway a few hours a day over a few weeks. the hardest part of the whole job is removing the one time use crank bolt that is only 7 bucks

Remove your front driveshaft and check the splines before it fails you, you may not need a new shaft. Easy job did mine and splines were dry with a puff of rust dust that came out with it. Luckily splines were good so i greased them with a heavy duty grease. I'm sure it'll be ok now even with such small spline engagement. Designed for easy assembly on the production line is the only reason it was designed this way id say. And replace your fuel filter.

Could also be valve seals. Try some Rislone Valve Seal Repair (on Amazon) to slow down the oil burning. And check your engine oil level every week.

Mate keep your fan clutch do not listen to this bullshit about get rid of it It’s needed bmw do not put stuff on there car they think isn’t relevant it helps the waterpump for cooling down the engine bay and gaskets to stop them getting hot and leaking people are not aware of this and remove it thinking it’s a piece of shit and does nothing trust me most who tell you that have no clue about BMW’s and have never worked for them most on KZbin are just DIYERS and that’s it nothing more then that everything they have learnt is from other youtubers

Try an oil burn treatment a couple weeks before an oil change, should help, also check the oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket a lot of oil can get through there when they leak

I have a 2003 E53 3.0i and just recently had to replace the valve cover gasket because of the oil leak. Now let's hope it didn't affect the alternator in any way since it has issues starting in cold weather.

Just replaced my 2002 X5 4.4 throttle body today after the dreaded engine failsafe mode caught me out stopping on the highway a few weeks ago. First i found a nearly totally blocked fuel filter, no that didn't fix it. Then i pulled the govebox and replaced the pump relay which had what looked like burnt contacts, not that. Then whilst still in the workshop the alternator shat itself, go figure😔 So i replaced that with a low milege one. Did the belts and tensioners as well, fuel tank vent relief valve too as it had a related fault code. I paid AU $5000 for this with 226,000 klm on it. So far up 8K I'd reckon in the 3 months ive had it but 4 new tyres as well. This thing is a money pit, oil leaks are free!! If i wasnt a mechanic there is no way i could afford it. But what a nice ride when it's happy😎

An E53 with a M57 3.0d has plenty of torque, great economy and a bomb-proof engine.. Maintenance is the critical issue as with all BMWs. Cheap 2nd hand BMW are usually poorly maintain.

Yes and no. The 1st generation (up to 2003) uses the piece of crap GM gearbox and is to avoid. The second gen uses the ZF one and it fairly reliable if you stay with the M54 engine.
