The point you made at 2:17 about not stretching regularly really resonated with me. I'm almost 19 now but I started with taekwondo when I was 4. I used to be super flexible but then recently I had MULTIPLE minor and major muscle pulls in under 3 months, which really humbled me. It was really eye opening. It was also in part due to me doing a lot of squats every day but not properly stretching which really made my hamstrings or smthg like that a lot tighter according to one of my instructors. Also my lower back has this thing called "Anterior Pelvic Tilt" because of the pandemic and me sitting my ass at the computer all day so now I need to fix my posture as well because it ruins my kicks. I really suggest everyone trains flexibility a LOT, to the absolute maximum. It's also a good way to build mobility and also strength without increasing muscle mass significantly. On top of that, I cannot stress the importance of building *stability*. Your muscles need to have that stability in various tense and difficult movements to really bring out that power, and resistance band training imo really helps with that stuff. I don't know much on this topic and I myself am only starting with it soon (if I'm not lazy again), but I have heard from others about this being the case.

The "stretching every day" bit really hit me. When I started Karate, the strenuous exercises had the same effect as heavy resistance training - needing quite a few days for the muscles to rebuild and recover. I got into the habit of being inactive between classes, but that lack of exercise and stretching was not only limiting my progress, but actively undoing some of it. It's really frustrating when, even after 15 months, I still look like a complete newbie when I try to do push-ups or certain stretches. 😩 Thankfully, I finally started to do some proper work on non-class days. 💪

I was guilty of neglecting defense when I started mma and in a couple of matches (where in one i got my shoulder badly dislocated from a kimura), because in taekwondo the tendency is to attack attack and attack by searching the consequentiality of kicks (and punches for itf taekwondo, at least i did) and I remember that I took a ton of punches to the face because I lacked defense tho my dad and trainers told me to protect myself everytime. Then i literally started to focus just on how to defend effectively, and I arrived to a point where I can do an active defense, similar to Poirier's one. I m not as good as him obviously but I can do a pretty good job as well.
@hariman77272 күн бұрын
1: I had to take extra time during karate class to warm up because the warmup hadn't gone long enough and my left leg was extra stiff that day. After some extra stretching I was good to go. 2: I'm lucky to be in a school of mostly blackbelts. I MUST be humble because I know I'm the junior guy. !!! I also got taught/realized there's more training time in one or two ranks of Black Belt/San ranks than the whole of the Kyu ranks. Black Belt means you have obtained basic mastery of the art, and your training can then begin. 3: HFS, I am SO guilty of this. I tend to want to do things snappy and fast, but I'm still learning to I have to slow my roll. 4: See number 1. I gotta get better on this, especially since I also lift now. 5: Noted! 6: I've seen this happen. It can work, as I saw it used with a spinning back kick and get caught/countered because the Sensei using it isn't as fast as he once was. 7: Agreed. 8: I didn't start Karate to give up. I'm in it for life. 9: Also agreed. 10: Yep. Slow and steady progress is the best. If you push yourself to an injury or exhaustion it wastes more time than just training properly.

I remember getting into a bit of an argument with a friend over Muay Thai or Savate Kickboxing being better (for street application), I had mentioned doing Savate and he claimed Thai was better. His reasoning was something along the lines of "Thai practitioners hit extremely hard and fast, opponents would likely take a few shots without being able to hit back and go down" and I did 100% agree with him about how Thai fighters hit like absolute trucks and can crush people, but I either then tried to just say that Thai wasn't necessarily better or tried to prove that Savate was better (I can't remember rly well since it took place a while ago but i think i was just defending Savate and saying Thai wasnt necessarily better). i brought up how precise one has to be in Savate and how the kicks are still vicious with how they come up and how they can be faked low and then take out the head or vise versa and how said precise strikes hitting with the toes can easily put someone on the ground from something like a liver shot or a shot to the side of the head. i also brought up the great use of spin kicks like spinning heel hooks or crescents and tornadoes but he just kept bringing up more reasons that all countered mine, then i eventually got fed up and left the chat LOL

Or to reduce the stress I put on it? - What weight should the punching bags be? I'm 90 kg (Mainly fat) and the only one I have at home is 20 kg because my lil cousin uses it. - What is a good sparring partner? My grandma, my lil cousin, or the house cat?
