National Anthem of the Tsardom of Bulgaria: Shumi Maritsa

"Shumi Maritsa" ("Maritza Rushes"), also known as the "Chernyaev March", was the Bulgarian national anthem from 1886 until 1947. The music was derived from the German folk song "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren“ that was popular in Bulgaria during the mid-19th century. The original text was written by Nikola Zhivkov, a head teacher in Veles (now in North Macedonia). The lyrics were edited many times, most notably in 1912 by the poet Ivan Vazov. The title refers to the Maritsa, a river in the Balkans.

D'après Anatol Antchev, auteur d'une étude sur Šumi Marica (Darjavna Firma "Mouzika", 1992), cette chanson trouve son origine dans le Mouvement de libération nationale bulgare de la fin du XIXe siècle. C'est à Nikola Jivkov, professeur principal à Vélès (Macédoine) sous la domination ottomane, que l'on doit les premières paroles sur cette musique d'Ivan Vazov. La dernière version ci-dessous est due à Ivan Vazov (1912).

„Шуми Марица“ е национален химн на България от 1886 до 1947 г. Първоначалният текст на песента е написан от Никола Живков, главен учител във Велес, Тулча, Свищов и др. по време на Възраждането. След много варианти остава последната редакция на Иван Вазов от 1912 г.
В средата на 19 век в гр. Шумен оркестърът на унгарския емигрант Михай Шафран популяризира немската песен „Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren“ („Когато войниците маршируват през града“). Мелодията се харесала на котленския учител Атанас П. Гранитски (1820 - 1874), който учителствал в Шумен от 1859 до 1862 г. Той пригодил към нея думите на стихотворение „Слънце-зорница“, писано от самия него още през 1855 - 56 г., и така се появява песента, която се счита за междинно звено между немския марш „Wenn die Soldaten“ и „Шуми Марица“.

In early March 1941, Bulgaria joined the Axis alliance and, in April 1941, participated in the German-led attack on Yugoslavia and Greece. In return, Bulgaria received German authorization to occupy most of Greek Thrace, Yugoslav Macedonia, and Pirot County in eastern Serbia.
