"Lupang Hinirang" (Chosen Land), informally known by its incipit "Bayang Magiliw" (Beloved Country), is the national anthem of the Philippines.
Originally known as "Marcha Nacional Filipina," its music was composed in 1898 by Julián Felipe, and the lyrics were adopted from the Spanish poem "Filipinas", written by José Palma in 1899. It was first performed in public during the proclamation of Philippine independence at the Aguinaldo Shrine last June 12, 1898, with original Spanish lyrics. After being prohibited by the Americans in 1907, the anthem continued to be prominent up to the repealing of the Flag Act in 1919. The musical arrangement was made official in 1938, and the lyrics, which were subsequently translated into Filipino, were made official in 1956.
