To coincide with Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the ABC has launched a TV spot entirely performed in Auslan.
Produced by ABC MADE, this marks one of the first times ever that a TV spot has been completely performed in Auslan! The sign-along features Auslan users from across the country (and beyond) signing “I Am Australian” with 82 people submitting their videos to participate in the TV spot.
The ABC worked with The Deaf Society and Deaf Services to reach out to Auslan users from all over Australia.
The ABC would like to thank the many team members who were involved in creating the instructional video to share with their network.
The ABC also reached out to Expression Australia, Aussie Deaf Kids, and Auslan for Everyone.
Notable sign-along participants include:
Sally Strobridge from Sally and Possum, Australia's first-ever TV show entirely in Auslan.
Emma Wiggle (Emma Watkins) who uses Auslan to provide access for children who use sign
language, children who may be deaf, have deaf parents, are on the autism spectrum or who are non-verbal.
Emma grew up with friends who are deaf and is currently studying Auslan.

It really lifted me on Friday to see this on ABC. Who was the Auslan translator? Also, possibly “Mass for you at home” on the Ten network is/was the earliest Auslan interpreted TV and longest running program on Australian TV.

Didn't you notice there weren't any Asians in this AUSLAN version? I am Australian and I find this very insulting because w have a large Asian community (some of whom are deaf) and they are not represented in this version. It's very insulting to some minority grouos

It is however turning into a polarized society- of rich and poor. I think we need a wealth tax to stabilise the society. It will be very unpopular - but something must be done. Malcom Turnbull for example $400 million plus in the bank. Most of it overseas. Is this "australian"? You decide

Aren't there any Asian or Jewish deaf people? My partner and I find this add extremely insulting. It doesn't represent the multi cultural Australia we live in. 1/3 of our population is Asian and we also have a large Jewish community. We know deaf people in both.
