Here Shreya Ghoshal has another milestone. She won her recent award for a Telugu song in a Tamil movie. This is for the first time in history a North Indian singer wins award for a Telugu song. Before it happened only for SPB sir. A South Indian singer won award for a northern language. He won award for a Hindi song in a kannada movie. If Chithramma won for 10 songs in three languages, Shreya Ghoshal won an award for two different languages in a year, for a Marathi and a bengali song. She is the only recipient who received a national award for two different languages in a year. So she holds another record that she won national awards for four languages. and she is the only one who received the national award for the first song itself. Shreya received her 4th National award in her age 24 whereas Chithramma received her fourth and fifth in the age of 33 and 34. Shreya Ghoshal won her fifth award in 39. But the point is that Shreya Ghoshal had plenty of songs to be awarded. But she had been avoided for 14 years from the award list. She held plenty of compositions to be awarded in different languages. Even she was there in the list for Malayalam songs kaathirunn and neermathalappo, Ghar more pardesiya etc. But it took 14 years to win again. Then it's definite that Shreya Ghoshal will win more. With all respect to Chithramma, Shreya will beat her in National awards. Besides that Shreya holds the maximum number of filmfare awards for best female playback singers that are 16 till now including south and Bollywood. State awards are there. But nowadays most of the state awards are pending. Kerala gives it every year without fail. If there was a constant announcement, she would have won so many.

But Chithraji herself said that many of her songs in hindi films got cancelled or replaced with other native singers.. I'm not saying about awards.. But about the songs.. Singer Sujatha who has the most melodious voice in south industry was neglected to the core in the history of national awards. In 1996, first they announced her name for the song “Poo pookum osai” (minsara kanavu) but suddenly it was changed and announced Chitra’s name for Oo la la la 🫢. It was really a shocking news then. In 2007, she was all set to win for the soulful melody Thattam pidichu valikalle (Paradesi) but unexpectedly shreya won it for Yeh ishq (Jab we met). Yeh ishq is very famous song of that year but technically it is not so great. Unfortunately, Sujatha finished her career without a single national award 😢. She rendered 100s of beautiful melodies which are way better than some award winning songs.

Vani jairam amma was about made that record. First singer to win a national award for 2 different languages 1979 - Meera (Hindi) and Shankarabaranam (Telugu) But the committee selected only one song. Vani jairam was the only singer who got this prestigious award for difficult classical songs. All her 3 national award winning songs are extraordinary compositions. Particularly “Anathi neeyara” from Swathi kiranam stands tall in this list. Totally she deserved 8 awards (all the remaining 5 nominations also classical raga based songs) but 5 times she was neglected by the committee by stating some silly rules but I wonder how those rules didn’t work out for Chitra. Both Janaki and Chitra received awards for same song 🙄. In 1979, there was a tie between Meera (Hindi) and Shankarabaranam (Telugu). Vani rendered all the songs in those movies. Judges selected Shankarabaranam because it won many awards in other categories. They were unable to choose one song, because each and every song of Vani in that album is masterpieces so they didn’t mention the song and gave it to entire album. Only vani holds this pride.

She is an exceptional singer who was not given due recognition for a lot of tough songs she rendered with ease. Her range of songs are a testimony to her singing prowess and yet many a times ignored by the national award jury. Some songs were just tailor made for vani amma🙏 An underutilized legend in true sense🙌 Rest in peace amma😢
